Fantastic, most gripping, with all the edge-of-seat qualities not often found today, complete with broken string and demented devilry, the 3rd movement particularly savage, the orch coming thru by a miracle.Abbado, conducting from memory- what a risk in this rare piece, works wonders with a sub-standard orchestra who rise heroically to the occasion;love the intensity of 4th mvt. How wonderful to find this unexpected document;thank you so much for sharing it.
TOTALES
This is priceless! Performances of the Prokofiev 5th were rare in 1968 and this excellent account is therefore quite a treasure. The pianist performs with great spirit and Abbado conducts with his usual precision. Bravo! A fine post! Oh... I should also mention that to have Severino Gazzelloni in the orchestra, an artist who performed the Prokofiev Flute sonata so well during his career, is an added treat!
Grande esecuzione.
I see that I commented on this video almost a year ago, finding it a brilliant offering. I would like to add that I find it puzzling that Dino Ciani was not better known in his time. He was a brilliant pianist. That is obvious. He should have been ranked with Pollini and maybe even Michelangeli. If I can judge from this performance, he was that good.
I'm about three years late (Sorry!!), but there is a video of Prok4 on YT, with Gary Graffman. If you haven't yet found it (and I hope you have), Check it out. Enjoy. ☺
Ah! Now I see that Ciani died in an accident at the age of 32. What a loss that was! Surely he would have become recognized as one of the great pianists of his time.
Committed to this music as they all are .The last few pages of 4th movement are divine but hard to make sense of this work at first hearing.sometimes Prok uses neo-classical lean textures and other times not but the harmony is always 20th century!
Prezioso documento. Grazie!

Prokofiev was a genius, and this performance one of the best. LOVE the second movement.
This was 1968 when Prokofiev still scared the stuffing out of most symphony patrons. Today there are All-Prokofiev Concerts all over the world.

Broke G-string in 1:55.... so much that I love Prokofjev, why did he have to do this😆

Musica!
Now if I could only find a video of Prokofiev 4 for one hand, I could die a happy Prokofievphile.

snaaptaker Thanks for the reference. Awesome, I love this weird little one hand concerto.
William Kapell= Dino Ciani =32 legends.

that was very Faustian.....
0:21 Sviatoslav richter violin.
lol
dino ciani = william kapell great artists
Ciani looked like Dustin hoffman
Do you have good glasses, and above all a good acoustic trumpet?
.... but, is it music??
I don't intend to accuse prokofiev(and people who like his music)....but I can't understand his musical sense at all.
*****
hahahahah you think?
Personally I hate this concerto...it sounds WAY too cartoony.
