  • On this trip we discovered Great Basin National Park in the north eastern part of Nevada. This park is about a 5 hour drive from Las Vegas. We were here in July so it was a hot, semi-boring drive most of the way, but once you get to the higher elevations the weather turns very nice!
We camped at the Upper Lehman campground, which was AWESOME!! There is a pretty strong stream which meanders through the entire campground, so you are serenaded by its flowing waters. There is beautiful plants and wildlife in the area as we also saw some deer wondering in the park too!
Great Basin has the designation of having been certified as a Dark Sky Area, which means that there is very little light pollution around, so you have very beautiful bright star-filled skys at night! We were in amazement!
We hiked the Alpine Lakes Loop Trail which is about 3.5 miles in total, and the highlight of the hike is that you come across two beautiful glacier-melt filled lakes. We could have stayed there for hours, but the kids wanted to eat...
