I live in Pittsburgh, U.S. and you will never find an apartment such as this for $700 dollars per month including utilities (gas, electric, water, sewage) My broadband alone is $200.00 monthly. Also, I am always amazed by the U.K. system of prepaying for gas & electric?
Prepaying for gas or electricity is usually for rented properties. It means the tenant doesn't build up an unmanageable debt. It works out more expensive than monthly payments. Also if there's no money on the card then no electric or gas can be used - fuel poverty as we call it.

If they haven't got the money they can't use anything. But that means being cold and only eating cold food. However by paying by direct debit (the same amount over 12 months) people can spread the cost of winter usage to the summer months - when they don't use as much. You'll know how much the utilities have increased in price these past months. Like everything in life - pros and cons.

The monthly amount is the same in winter as summer. Same concept, only the U.K. wants the money up front. If the "very low income" does not pay their bills, they simply shut off the gas and let them freeze.
if you are paying 200 bucks for internet a month, you must have insane speeds, like more than 1 gbps or are getting ripped off, cause for 200 mbps costs like 30-40 a month. 200 bucks a month is not what the avg person pays in the US

We are in the midst of a severe affordable housing crisis here in the U.S., and I understand Canada is experiencing the same. I know two senior citizens who were forced out of their long time rental apartments because the landlord wanted to turn the property into a short term rental for out of town visitors, aka an Airbnb. These short term rentals are illegal in my city, but the city does not enforce the law. One of the seniors found a room at a business. He is 80 years old and lived in his apartment for 30 years before. he was forced out. There is no loo and no kitchen in the room where he is now. He had to give his pet cat away because he could not take her with him. The other senior is a disabled woman in her 60s and had lived in her apartment for 9 years. She has not been able to find another apartment and is about to lose all of her furniture, clothing, etc., and become homeless. She has not found anyone to foster her service dog, so it looks like she will have to surrender him to the animal shelter. The situation here is dire, but the government here is doing nothing to help these people. There are no temporary or transitional units for them. Is your home a "council flat" that is government subsidised? What would you do if you could not live in your flat? Will you be able to transition into a larger home where you will not have to pay for electricity, gas, etc., in future? Will the government help you? Do you have a lot of homelessness people there?
I live in a ground floor apartment like this with thin walls, it can get very noisy. In my bedroom I can hear the guys TV next door, in my living room I can hear the couple having fun time in their bedroom, and I hear the family upstairs running up and down all day, talking, coughing, sneezing, farting.

Currently we live in a double story house, open plan living room, beautiful kitchen, guest toilet, double garage with a toilet for helpers. Upstairs we have 3 double bedrooms, guest bathroom with a shower and bath. My bedroom has its own bathroom with a toilet, bath and shower. Your place costs 15 122,97 South African Rand. Our place costs 9000 Rand. England rent prices are ridiculous
the reason you see so many doors in British homes is to retain heat. a lot of new build british homes are now being made more open plan (less doors) but that tends to be more private builders, where as big corporation companies that build homes, they will build them with a lot of doors for retaining heat during the winter months which is strange because as you know, some states in the US are so much colder than the UK in winter.. but i guess it is just a difference in design.
People in the US are all about size and aesthetics rather than function and practicality. Just look at how many unnecessary oversized SUVs and pickups we have on the road, and how the amount of food we get when we eat out. Then we complain about how expensive our bills are. We are spoiled brats lol.
I noticed that there was a door leading out of the living/ kitchen also and bedrooms are very small. The electrical and gas is totally different in American . We don’t charge anything like that and it’s way more expensive here in the US. Rent is extremely high here. I think the person that commented from Pittsburgh mentioned to text 2000,00 not 200.00.
