Things are looking good Spencer. I'll bet your wife is thrilled to get a garage to park in this winter. A few things I would say. Consider changing the 90 degree fittings on your dust collection to a pair of 45's at the top of your drop from table saw, joiner, and planer. Also where you drop down at the cyclone. Watch for condensation building up in your compressor in a unheated space. Unless you find a great deal on lumber, I would only store what you need for a known project. No sense in having money tied up in excess inventory. Operate as lean as you can. Shops have a way of getting full no matter what size they are. May God continue to bless you and your business.

Thanks! If it's any consolation the adjustable elbows are all long sweep elbows so the turn isn't too tight. The system was designed by oneida so I think it's ok. I'm pretty happy with the suction there. So far I've found that I can keep all three machines open and still have good suction.

@@InsiderCarpentry It's the two 90s + the wye right at the inlet of the DC that's problematic. You'd be better off with a gradual rise. It's really critical the first 10' or so is straight to avoid turbulence that's going to cause issues with separation in the cyclone itself. It's also likely causing performance problems. Obviously nothing is ever perfect, but this seems like a fixable problem.
      All the best!

You’re smiling throughout this video. It’s obvious you’re realizing a dream in real time.
    In my old shop
    Consider these “shop improvements”
I built a torsion box for my out feed table. I used 61” x 145” Formica 949 (white). We evidently put cabinet along the long edge. I also had plug drops hanging from the ceiling over the work tables.
Finally. Put wheels under your “Brute” trash cans.
I’m so happy for you Spencer. I hope work is lined up for you and Paul, but hopefully you can work on the shop too.
Ps. My kids loved coming to the shop and riding their scooters all around.
    Again, this is Fantastic!

With the amount of plywood you go through a sliding table saw would definitely pay for itself in very little time. It’s a whole different thing. You got enough on your plate for now but down the road you gotta look into it. The Sawstop is still great to have. With all the room you have I would definitely have both. Wicked happy for you. This shop is a dream!!!

Spencer, You said in the beginning. You'll be tweaking this space as long as you're alive. When you think its done, another project will pop up and throw a wrench in your plan😢😢. The old question thats asked is "How do you eat an elephant?" 1 bite at a time. Youre off to a great beginning here, so don't dwell on it too much. As need be you will put things in place. They'll make sense at the right time and you can see things clearly at that point. Dont try to do it all now. Youre up and running, so just let things come to you. You've got the rest of your career to make changes----and you will make changes😊😊. Things look great, enjoy it for a bit and relax.

Looking awesome Spencer! Couple thoughts… build a large spray booth on the cold side for projects but you could also rent it out to generate some side cash. Maybe build a small elevator for tools to go up to your loft. Then you can grab what you need on a cart and lower it down ready to rock! You could frame in the loft if you want to keep the dust off. Keep up the great work!

  • @haltz

I thought you were going to end that video without mentioning the kapex. I guess it doesn't matter how big the shop is, having a rail forward saw in the miter station is the only way it doesn't feel like a waste of space. I have a bunch of DeWalt saws and a Bosch in the garage.
I've always thought that a small drawback of having a big shop is the lack of wall space. I wonder if there's a partition wall that makes sense near your assembly table that you could mount a boom arm.
Super happy for you. It would be hard for me to articulate how much this channel has helped me over the years.

I've never seen you smile so much so that's I all need to know! Very happy for you. On the mezzanine @17:00 maybe you could add a lift/elevator a la Jay Bates' shop? Could store a lot of lumber for example. Also, looking forward to your Golf Simulator build (a la April Wilkerson) 😂 God Bless brother!

Retired after fifty+ years in the carpentry trade. Over thirty years doing finish. The body has been good but as I added numbers to my age and even though finish carpentry is easier than some other trades it takes its toll. Planing for the future I was going to make the transition to woodworking. Every bit as intense with more rewards. You have a dream shop and just maybe you have a plan. You have good hands a blessing from the creator. You take care and its nice to see you share what the new carpentry is doing. Keep Cheerful.

    Shop is looking great!
    My recommendation for add ons.
A tipping rolling cart for sheet goods, set sheets on vertical for space saving.
Medium size 3x6 carts in between stations.
When needed tip it horizontal and slide right onto the tablesaw.
At 48 ,wish I would have taken better care of my back and joints when I was younger.
Having just moved a big 10 hp 500lb dust collector from floor onto a mezzanine, and running 250 ft of ductwork in an active cabinet shop.
Our local lumber yard charges $75 per hour (including their driving time) for a forklift fee.
It was well worth it and was able to get it going again with only 4 hrs of downtime.
Sometimes hiring a service is cheaper especially when you're busy
    Again it looks great!

Like the new look! Only suggestions I have: Enclose the compressor to have it heated. Not sure how cold the other side of the garage will get. And always drain it!! too often I see large units, that the guys never maintain :) 2nd idea is that the lumber rack is too far from the garage door. I would have put the rack to the RIGHT of the Kapex. Long walk to store stock.
    Looks great!!

      @InsiderCarpentry  7 месяцев назад +1

I think that I didn't do that because it would have shifted my miter saw further down the wall and away from my assembly area. It was all trade offs and compromises trying to find the best layout.

Awesome space! In our shop we use old style four poster carts to move wood from saw to jointer to planer etc. I highly recommend them, and you now have space for that. Not an urgent concern right now but before you introduce a lot of weight to the cat walk section of the mezzanine, I would want to see how those 2X4 support brackets are connected to the wall behind the sheathing and the floor joist. Might want to beef things up with additional framing members and maybe gusset the brackets as well. That structure was not designed with a lot of weight in mind. Good money to remove a few sheets, take some photos and run them by an engineer. Reminds me of some tragic deck failures I have seen. Be safe. Stay safe.

    • @InsiderCarpentry
      @InsiderCarpentry  7 месяцев назад +1

The weight would all be anchored to the wall with lags into the framing I wouldn't actually have any weight on the actual cat walk. You are correct, its not built to handle much weight.

No shop envy here! Nope! None. Zip. Zilch. Nadda. 🤷‍♂️
    Gratz Spencer!
There was a time where I had my shop laid out perfectly in my head. The perfect work flow blah blah blah. But like you I found out even the best plan prior to actually setting it up is almost always doomed to fail. There is always something you forget or just didn’t think about that shonuff made an appearance once you put your preverbal feet in concrete. In short I’ve learned to be flexible and allow for tweaking, small/large adjustments etc or I would suffer the consequences and have to do it over again. Flexible overhead power drops that can swing or turn. Same with the dust collection. Modular. Modular. Just like your work van.
Anyway, I’m done preaching to the choir 😂 You got this and if you haven’t nailed it down by now I can’t think of anyone who is as determined as you are to improve on any workflow.

Sorry, no plan available on the material storage, but i think it was pretty easy to design.

Great video always so well thought out. I'm sure you already thought this but maybe a service lift to move items up and down more conveniently. Best of luck Spencer.

I think you and finish carpentry tv started off the same a few years ago, as far as videos go, you have kept it real and kept building a real business, the other guy, not so much.

Couldn't agree more. It has taken the other guy awhile to drink the green kool-aid. And he is better for it. 😁

Richard has done better with growth on RUclips though because he speaks to a larger audience. I tend to talk to fellow professionals and thus don't get the reach that I would if I spoke more to the DIYer. At the end of the day for me I'm a carpentry business not a RUclips business.

I have a similar set up in my workshop for the sheet materials.
Best thing I've found is flat bench storage. Slide them out of the van onto an infeed table then onto your storage area.
Then when you are working you can slide them onto the infeed table and straight into the table saw.
Might need to move your table saw but it really saves alot of lifting and lugging.
    Place looks great man

Wow, from a small space to gigantic space. A dream every carpentry would love to have. You have an amazing knack for organizing things with the mindset something will come along to suggest you could have done it differently. Amazing in every respect and I hope it helps expand your business but allow you continue to connect with your followers. You spent a lot of time showing us around and I appreciate that as it gave me some tips for my garage, although 1/100th of your shop. :)

Congratulations on getting your shop off to a great start! This video was very timely; I just broke ground on a 50x50 shop and I've been wearing myself out trying to figure out the layout of my equipment. I saw many things in your video that gave me great ideas for my shop.

You’re a blessed guy Spencer and was that your oldest son? If so he has grown no one is taking his lunch money! I work in a small shop and it was like yours attached to my Custom built home , where it was just me! I acclimated my expensive customers cabinet ply in a designated room in my house ! Had almost 2500 sq ft so when my kids came to visit no big deal!
Then my parents moved in and the fun was over! Every single room gone! To include my wood room!
Now I am looking for a partner & a shop!

Seems to me like the mezzanine would work for storing lumber but only if you had a fork lift. For instance say a pallet of plywood comes in it could be stored up there out of the way or if you suddenly find a great buy on some other lumber you may need down the road.

I’m guessing the rim joist on the cantilever is about a 2X10. So let’s call the mezzanine 2X10 @ 16” OC. This would be reasonable for the span. Let’s store 2 pallets of 3/4” sheet ply up there. About 80 sheets. Same weight as a full sized SUV. So, I would eat lunch in the shop and relocate the coffee maker next to the cold storage wall. The electrician who gave the shop up - had different uses for the space so it might be a good idea to consult with your architect or PE friends before you park a 2004 Chevy Tahoe up there. Not to be too disagreeable or sarcastic but live loads are what they are. Again, safety is always important. In the trades everyone takes risks. We just need to know when we need the parachute and when we might not.

Shop is awesome! May I suggest instead of a 9’ wide door between the shop and cold storage area, put a 10’ wide door. A 9’ door with the trim yields less than 6” on each side with 8’ wide stacks of plywood and line of sight from the forklift seat can be tricky. An extra 6” on each side is worth the money.

My only comment, having moved entire households multiple times, two of which were downsizing is: put things in some order right away!!!
Your hand tools just “tossed” in the storage room now means you have to sort through them again!! Sorting them by size or purpose quickly, then doing a final sort will actually be easier.
    Good luck!!

Any economical dust collection ideas for a small garage shop that doesn't cost thousands? Talking like a two or three tool system. Table saw, miter saw, sander/router. Love your channel. Invaluable crown help. Consistency of cut! Haha
Mezzanine paint booth... With addition of freight elevator.
And the hoop? Didn't take you for a Hoosiers fan.

A simple 220 volt single stage machine should definitely fit your requirements. Lots of them out there. Just do some research and design a system that works for you. It can be cheap. It all depends on how much you need for the work that you do. Good luck. The difference between 110 and 220 is worth the price of admission.

Well I know I’m envious! Nice job on shop build out, only thing I can think of is the overhead door between bays. It should be 10’ wide and a roll up / canister door so horizontal tracks are not in the way. Been following for some time now and if memory serves me right in one of your vids you mentioned that a miter saw station in the shop was more or less a waist of space,, glad you are adding one. To me it’s a key feature for any shop and the zero clearance saw 👍 look forward to seeing the rest of it
