    Thanks for sharing your troubling times...Farming is all about life and death.....most people think its all rosy but there is a lot of heartbreak losing animals...not to mention the cost of vets attendance plus medication

    I lost 2 young heifers with blackleg about 20yrs ago, vaccinated ever since and never had anymore trouble. Remember at the time the vet telling me they had a customer who was busy at silage and had a batch of about 60 heifers grazing at an out farm, they hadn’t checked them for about 6 days when they went to check found 12 laying in the field dead all blackleg

    Did a bit of research but also a Clostridium type problem. Clostridium in silage is in Germany a big headache. Leaky gut syndrome and a ton of other problems. Vaccination didn't bring our farm forward. More focus in hygiene in the feeding alley, silo's and fields did.

      vaccination is the only way to deal with black leg ........no way around it.

    Thanks for sharing, sounds like you acting quickly and did what you could to save the heifers. Down here in Cornwall, dad lost a couple beef calves at grass donkey years ago, he says it hits the best ones in the group. We have vaccinated before 1st turn out since then. But according to vet it’s not common practice to use the vaccine.

    Sorry to hear about your problems with the future members of your herd. On top of the recent TB issues, it must be very hard to swallow. Good luck going forward.

    So sorry about your lost heifers.
    Really tragic. Thank heavens for good vets that get to the bottom of it quick. Are there soil tests that could determine the ground contamination? Best wishes any way and always enjoy your vids although this one is sad.

    Sad news but at least you acted fast and have saved the rest. Cannot say I have had any experience of blackleg. The livestock come before RUclips, because they take priority!
    The freindly heifer, you need them characters in a herd because they great to have about. When I used to work on a dairy farm I had a crew of friendly ones and they all knew I had a bit of proven or some digestive biscuits in my pocket as a treat for them. It was always good fun cleaning off the cubicles and sending them on into the collecting yard.

    Blackleg is not contagious. The source for transmission is the clostridia bacterium spores waiting in the soil for the opportunity to come in contact with an open wound or to be ingested by a grazing animal. (Viewers)

    Had one years ago
    Very few survived then antibiotics may have improved but the infected side had muscle loss. The animal was fine but with one withered muscle on her top back leg

    I’ve never considered blackleg to be a significant risk before talking to the vet at our recent TB test. She reckoned that we should vaccinate against it as, even though we’ve never had a case in 50 years or more. It costs pennies apparently. If I wasn’t retiring over the next six months I would certainly start vaccinating.

    You can vaccinate when their calves after I think 2 weeks old which might be the best time.

  • @ebxo269
    @ebxo269 3 дня назад +1

    In an outbreak, all susceptible cattle should be vaccinated and treated prophylactically with administration of penicillin (10,000 IU/kg, IM) to prevent new cases for as long as 14 days. Cattle should be moved from affected pastures...
