While Sonic SuperStars isn't amazing (It's just pretty good in my eyes) it's FAR from the most dissapointing Sonic game when things like Sonic 4 Episode 1 and Sonic 06 exist

@@visionxry Forces and Lost World were games that had promise that ultimately were just ok. 06 was supposed to be the new beginning of the entire series, Sonic's most ambitious title ever, and it almost killed the entire FRANCHISE. 06 is OBJECTIVELY the most disappointing game in the series.
Sonic 4 is not just disappointing. It's just bad overall. Superstar is disappointing because it could've been good, but wasn't. It's no Sonic 4 levels of bad. But it's close.

I could understand where people are coming from when they call this game a disappointment. A lot of people expected it to be one of the best 2d sonics, and it just didn’t live up to the hype. I really enjoyed this game, don’t get me wrong. But there is no question that it should’ve been better.

It was just straight up bad because of how it fell in disgrace on what made the classic series so good. While Superstar looked like it was gonna turn out good, but to be disappointed that it wasn't exactly as good as we hope. It's still better than Sonic 4 for sure. But it's nowhere near as good as the other classic titles and especially Mania. Heck. Even something like Sonic Advance Trilogy or Rush Trilogy are better.
I haven’t beaten Superstars quite yet, and I gotta say, it’s a fun time! It’s a visual treat, and the controls feel really good! It’s not as good as Frontiers or Mania, but it’s a fun enough time (of course, that’s because I’ve avoided the multiplayer after hearing about all the issues it had, and if anyone had issues with it that made your experience bad, that’s valid).
I got this game the day it came out, I beat it in 2 days, replayed the main story as the other characters and currently have a total of 43 hours of playtime and I have to say,as someone who loves classic Sonic,has been waiting for a game like this since 2018, I thought while it doesn't reach the highs of something like Sonic 3k or mania, I thought it was a great modernization of the classic formula with some problems that can easily be ironed out in the future. It's probably tied with Sonic 2 as my 5th favourite Sonic game and if I were to compare this game to something else it would probably be crash bandicoot 4,as I feel like both games generally understood how the gameplay of previous games worked, added some new bells, whistles and QoL stuff but also had some issues, that again can easily be fixed in a sequel or successor. Also I would not call this the most disappointing Sonic game when stuff like the game that almost killed the series,06 and the unworthy sequel that is Sonic 4 episode 1 exist

Interesting take tbf. I must say I'm a huge fan of both original crash and Sonic Franchises. I found Crash 4 to be a flawed masterpiece whilst Sonic Superstars I found to be a massive disappointment.. The unnecessarily difficult boss fights just utterly spoil any sense of a fun and chilled out Sunday afternoon playthrough like I still have with the originals. That Golden Capital boss in particular is just utterly ridiculous. Not what Sonic was about at all. You really get the feel that someone who didn't have any nostalgia/investment about the original games had a heavy influence on this game...
Ugh, why is everyone overreacting with Superstars? It's not the most disappointing Sonic game and it's an insult to call it that. It's even got a higher Metacritic user score than Frontiers which is a game that everyone (myself included) seems to love.

While I have not played it yet, seeing the gameplay, I would not say it is that bad. It may not be as innovative as Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but it is not entirely awful.

That's because most Mario games don't rushed the heck out of them and they make an polished & solid quality titles. Yes. Not all are winners. Nintendo has rushed the games before and there are games they screwed up. Like Paper Mario: Sticker Star & Color Splash, the modern Mario Sports games and even Super Mario Sunshine are guilty examples of that. But that's only an small minor of low Mario games and none of them are what I would say are bad. Just mediocre & disappointing. But the rest are very high that outweighs the low.

This game is far from Awful, I just platinum’d it today and it was a blast to play through. My only problem was some of the bosses (Especially the final Eggman boss) But still a great game!
I actually really like superstars, I like some of the new gimmicks and reintroduced gimmicks, such as the grind vines in the jungle level, and the whole sky temple level was pretty fun.
Sonic Superstars isn't that amazing but it's still a good Sonic game at least it's better than Sonic 4 but I wish it had a lot more content, I wish it had online multiplayer story mode but at least it gave us online mode with the battle mode but It's not enough. Overall, I think Sonic superstars is a good Sonic game and at least it's better than Sonic 4 I just wish it had a lot more content.
With Super Mario Wonder, that game knew what it was wanting to be and went with it full send. Sonic Superstars on the other hand I feel doesn’t really know what it wants to be. Sometimes it wants to evolve the classic formula, other times it just wants to be a standard 2d game with nostalgia thrown in for good measure (though nowhere near as much as Sonic Mania) or does things that feel more like a de-evolution . Sometimes it throws some cool ideas at the player, other times it plays things too safe and it’s rather redundant. The games high and low points are just all over the place, even more so than Sonic 1 and CD. Overall, I’m still gonna pick Mania over this game. Yeah Superstars may have all original zones and less of a reliance on nostalgia, but Mania still had a lot of heart put into it and stuck with its intentions from start to finish. Superstars isn’t a disaster of a game like 06 or Sonic 4 sure, but even then that’s not a high bar to jump over nor should it be the standard you’re aiming for.
@@3dsfan2002 Funny you bring up the 3ds, because that’s legitimately what Superstars reminded me of. It feels like a lost 3ds game from 2015-16, especially since the 3ds had a massive slew of 2d platformers on it.
I’m one of the people who bought this game for $60, not knowing it would go on sale so quickly. I’m one of those people who likes bang for your buck for $60 games, and I beat this game in one sitting. I enjoyed it enough to do that, but the game is just okay. I did a repeat playthrough a few days later and that’s when I realized that the game isn’t great. I wish I waited til Black Friday to get it for $35.
I've been a fan of Demeech's content for over a year now, and I can confidently say that this is his worst review. many of your points are informative and make sense, specifically the game being $60 is hard to swallow for a casual sonic fan, as well as the bosses not being as good as mania. However, there are many statements that range from "This is VERY nitpicky" to "I don't think you understand sonic games". 8:50 for example makes no sense to describe a "POWER-UP", only using them when you want to, is a choice similar to how it is a choice to use the elephant fruit in Super Mario Wonder, so using it as a way to critic the game is very hypocritical. Furthermore, 11:05 stating that the game is too slow because of its high emphases on exploration is not the case because A) how fast the level goes is based off of how good you are (AKA the main reason to replay the games) and B) sonic 3&k also had a lot of exploration in the form of the big rings, and multiple routes. Also, a lot of the footage you use to describe the game isn't very... good, quite a bit of the time you miss a jump or get hit by an enemy saying that the game has bad level design, when really, it's your fault (some examples include, 7:00, 7:25, 9:30, and others I forgot). So, in conclusion, did this review change my positive view on the game? I don't know... (Proceeds to re-play the game over 5 times)
I cancelled the preorder of Sonic Superstars, cause as much as i love classic Sonic, i know i cannot trust him... Preodered both Mario Wonder and Sonic Superstars... But only cancelled one XD... 2 months later i finally bought it for half the price, brand new... and i still feel i paid too much for it... Mario Wonder on the other hand, its value can hardly be meassured in money, that game is amazing.
It really feels like the game could've been a lot better with just better planning. Couch co-op and competitive online modes are both things that require a lot of testing despite the fact that most people aren't even going to try them. Maybe that testing could've instead been used to ensure that the boss fights are actually fun or something.
Where is the idea of this game being the "most" disappointing Sonic game? Most people seem to like it. It's a decent game that unfortunately is not Sonic Mania but with unique stages or Sonic Advance but it's not a bad game.

The only issues are that it foes on a little too long and the excessive amount of returning stages. A Mania 2 with alll unique stages would be goat and even better than Super Mario Bros Wonder.
Sonic Superstars was far from Bad, it’s just ALRIGHT. These Classic Sonic Games never stray too far from whats already been done in the past which can result in a very safe and boring game. They need to innovate on Classic Sonic and ensure a level of quality for them to truly improve.
Honestly this game would have been fine enough if it came out a decade ago, but I'm still sticking with Unleashed, Generations, Mania, and Frontiers. I feel like Sega thinks everyone would eat up anything related to Classic Sonic after Mania was well received, so we ended up with Origins and this.
Honestly the worst aspect of this game is the $60 price point. The physics are spot on, and the graphics are great on the next gen versions. I do appreciate the criticism that this game receives bc I always want Sega to do better tho.
Even as a lifelong Sonic fan, I just haven’t been able to bring myself to get through over half of this game, it just isn’t important or high-budget enough to feel like an installment of one of the most successful gaming series, hell, one of the most successful franchises of all time! I know this isn’t really new for Sonic, but this one just feels so “Oh, hey. This happened”. It feels kinda like a mobile game. It hasn’t been horrible, just not that interesting.
One thing that baffled me about the game is that it doesn't do that thing where the camera pans to show more of the direction you're running in. Almost every 2D game does this because it makes it way easier to see where you're going. (Wonder actually does this, it's very subtle but if you pay attention you'll notice the screen scrolls to show more of the direction you're running in) It's even more baffling because Sonic is like.... A fast character?

Not gonna lie, I have a soft spot for this game. I think the controls are nice and fluid, the level design is actually pretty creative I think. But the music is very hit or miss, and the mania team should’ve absolutely come back for superstars, and game could’ve used the modern designs instead of bringing back classic sonic again, and I think the game could’ve had a better style like with shantae half genie hero and 2d sprite in a 3d world that looks 2d. Edit: I agree with the final bosses being a complete pain
Sonic Superstars is just above "painfully average", it's pretty good but has quite a few flaws Needless to say, Zone and Act transitions are the absolute bare minimum and some don't even make sense, I'm not sure who greenlit Arzest to work on this
I'd like to share my first experience with this game. I got the switch version, and I started a co-op playthrough with my friend. We frequently found it impossible to keep up with whichever of us was playing Sonic, and would have to keep teleporting for extended periods of time because there was no way for both of us to *exist* on screen. It didn't feel any better than playing as Tails in the old games. So we essentially had to ban the drop dash to play as Sonic. Our time was... decent. But something absolutely atrocious happened. Another segment of failing to keep up with the other person because of how the camera works occurred, and somehow, out of nowhere, I respawned in as Tails and my physics were entirely messed up. My character was slowed down, they couldn't jump higher than captain toad, and movement and traversal was impossible. And that's not even the worst part. This didn't go away upon death or restarting, and when I got in a spin-tube, my character was too slow to get out of it, and the camera focused on me instead of my friend. This means that we were softlocked. The game completely broke upon doing something that would be happening *frequently* throughout an entire playthrough, and became unplayable due to the bug. This is not acceptable. Going through single player, it's the most average classic sonic game ever. Levels are not interesting at all, and feel like something that you would find in a Roblox Sonic Level Maker. It'd be one of the more competent creators for sure, but still nothing stand out. This game is not worth 60 dollars, nor would I even say it's worth 30. It's uninteresting. Absolutely nothing of note happens. There's no memorable bosses, they all are either waiting simulators with easy attacks or die in 4 seconds. The levels are more generic than even Sonic Lost World, which at least had moments of spectacle. The only level that did something interesting was the level where you had to play in reverse. So, just go play Mario Wonder, Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe, Spark the Electric Jester, Freedom Planet, Megaman/X/Z/ZX, Hollow Knight, or Pizza Tower. Sonic is dead. The management is too scared to give developers time to innovate. Not that they should need any extra time, because incredible innovations have come from games with much less time. This series, just like pokemon, is in a mechanical drought, and it's time to admit that. Goodbye, Sonic. You only exist in fangames now.
Sonic may be dead for you but for me he isn't. I had a similar mindset when we got the first sonic movie trailer with the bad design but years went on and from some of the stuff we got, it has been getting a bit better. Examples include Sonic movie 1 & 2, Prime, Frontiers/DLC, and Dream Team. In terms of my experience of Superstars I thought it was a 7/10. Had some fun with this game but does has its faults in certain areas. If there's future dlc planned, hopefully the devs can improve on the elements that didn't work and make it better.

Here my review on sonic super stars keep in mind this one be spoiler heavy on what the game have and I will do some comparasion to some games but I will say right now, no, I will consider it the most disappointing sonic game that will go to sonic forces. I will start with the presentation and story, the story is alright is pretty straight foward and what I kinda expect from a classic sonic game I wouldn't call it a bad one, the game look great, personally I have no issues with retro look but I glad super stars took what I like to call modern retro look like mega man 11 the character look modern but keep their retro feel to them. Gameplay is solid, controls are good and level design is fine for the most part granted there are the exception when isn't good but is overall hit or miss, the chaos emeralds are have mostly good stages and unique gimmicks but like demeech said it should have a mapping option and the powers have some that not working and while I can't whine about it the last one isn't too worth it, character work well enough but I say the non sonic one look like they got less care but one thing I can't forgive on one of the acts of the water levels you can die from drowing after you beat the level. My main gripe with super stars is the music is defently like wonder's bosses having my second least favorite only behind the dark brotherhood ost, the bosses are mostly fine but the last bosses aren't good especially the autoscroller with fang which is just a chore altogheter, the co op isn't good either they I get that sonic is the fastest but should made sure the rest will keep on his mobility. Overall super stats is the weakest of the good recent sonic games frontiers and mania are the better deals, as a whole I say is arzest's best game but still can't rank it more than mid A tier. As for your vid I say it kept a pretty solif pace but I say the part of the story was a bit off but not bad and your collab was great one too.
This game to me is fun, but not the best 2D Sonic game. And I'm a huge Sonic fan who grew up playing the Sonic Rush Games. Asside from the issues with the bosses & lack of banger music, it has more compitence than Mario Strikers Battle Leauge, & the Sonic 4 games. It also feels better to control than Sonic Forces ever did.
I quite enjoy Superstars. Bosses are a lot easier once you level up to super status. Not a fan of the big bosses having no checkpoints though. That is my biggest gripe. Online is a joke addition though.
idk I just played it for the first time 2 days ago at my friends house in co op. It was pretty good (for the most part) however it was very obviously not designed with multiplayer in mind. My biggest complaint is that were was absolutely no respawning during boss fights even the really long multi phase boss fights, which lead to just one person having to hard carry for most of the late game boss fights. The only exception was the final boss, but that had its own jank issues. I think the first phase of the final boss was pretty confusing initially and way too long. Overall I had a good time with it and consider it a pretty good Sonic game, but definitely should not have been 60$ I think 40$ would've been a much more fair base-price, but my friend was the one who owned the game so I might be more biased in my opinion, not being the one that bought the game. I think definitely worth your time if you catch it on sale.
I thought sonic superstars was a really good game. I have no idea why people are being so negative about it. I can only assume they couldn't beat the bosses and got frustrated, blaming the game as opposed to themselves.
I bought Mario Wonder and Sonic Superstars in the same transaction from Best Buy. I loved Wonder enough that I 100%ed a solo run and am in the process of doing a multiplayer (online enabled) run with my brother. Conversely, I played Superstars with my brother. As it just so happened, the first stage I played was that frustrating amusement park-style level. After we beat that level, there was the forced solo Amy section, and after that, my brother took back his copy of Superstars. I never opened my copy and took it back to Best Buy for a full refund.
I'm not big into Sonic the Hedgehog, to be honest. However, the video had some awesome hilarious jokes. I feel like a new Mario Baseball game will get revealed at the February Nintendo Direct and released sometime in June because since we have Mario Strikers, Mario Golf, and Mario Tennis on the Nintendo Switch, Mario Baseball is the only Mario Sports series left that the Nintendo Switch needs. Mario Baseball is my most requested Nintendo Switch game and it’s pretty much the last Nintendo Switch game I need before the next Nintendo console comes around. I don't care if it gets “Free Updates” but I just want to see a Mario Baseball game for the Nintendo Switch so badly because it's my favorite Mario Sports series of all time. We’ll see what happens in February.

Crap game imo. It has a few good zones, bad bosses and a few bosses with the biggest difficulty jumps ever experienced. The final bosses simply do not respect your time.Mixed in with glitches and lack of polish and I just didnt enjoy it much. Mania did everything better.

Mario had a lot of good 3DS games unlike Sonic including: Mario 3D Land Mario Kart 7 Mario Golf World Tour Mario Tennis Open Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon Luigi’s Mansion 1 3DS Poochy and Yoshi’s Wolly World Mini Mario amibo Challenge Mario and Luigi + Bowser’s Minions The only bad 3DS Mario games are Yoshis New Island. Mario Maker 3DS. Paper Mario Sticker Star. Mario Sports Superstars. And Mario and Luigi Paper Jam.
Sonic only had: Sonic Generations 3DS Sonic Lost World 3DS Sonic Fire and Ice Sonic Shattered Crystal Sonic Racing Transformed 3DS That’s all I could think of. And all of these were bad.
I like Superstars okay, but I should’ve loved it. I’m waiting for reviews from now on. Sega has been really mismanaging projects lately. The early release states of Colors Ultimate and Origins, and now this. They’ve been handed great concepts on a platter and keep failing to deliver.
Epic crossover aside, I definitely don’t think this is the most disappointing Sonic game by a long shot, just the most “underwhelming” in which it had greater potential but only comes as just pretty okay and not offensively bad

The bosses in this game are enough to dock a point or two out of ten. Then the Sonic 4-style music takes another point or half a point off. I don't know how that repetitive boss theme was approved because it's utter shite.

I played a bit of this through a friend’s steam account and just could’t stomach another playthrough. It’s not a terrible game, but it’s annoying gimmicks and waiting simulator bosses just turned me off. Compared to what we got with Mania it can be seen as a disappointment. I’m glad I didn’t buy this.
Because they wanted to do their own thing for a bit (penny's big breakaway) however this game is born from an unfinished idea for a 2.5D classic Sonic game that the head of Sonic team wanted to make with evening star but the development didn't go far before they wanted to do their own thing, however both the head of Sonic team and Christian Whitehead said that they're still on good terms so they could easily come back
Sonic is one of my favorite franchises but i want to like this game but it makes me mad like it took mania and went you know what sonic 1 is a good template for levels. First half is alright when we get to later levels they are not fun or horrible like press factory. The bosses are horrible
As a sonic fan that absolutely did not like and even distaste Sonic Frontiers for providing a bare bones unfinished sandbox game I find that Superstars Whille severely having its down sides, looking at you Final bosses! And not so stellar music but overall as a fan of both the 2D and 3D sonic titles I find that this game with a bit of a *PLUS* expansion found in Maina I think this game can provide a better game to make a better impression
If I have to give rating for Superstar, it would be an 6/10. It's not an bad game at all and it's better than Sonic 4 at least. However this game has so many faults and big ones at that in which turns me off on replaying this game. The level designs are hit and miss, the gimmicks behinds some levels don't match well, the camera is way too close in which is hard to see your surroundings, the Emeralds power up; while cool idea in theory, is very undercook, the co-op mode sucks, the bosses are the absolute worst due to some that takes forever to kill and some are brutal because they will have many BS moments or just one shot you with horrendous hit boxes that's very obnoxious, Trip's and Last Story segment aren't that good and the game is unpolished once again. Seriously, if there's one thing that keeps most Sonic games from being over an 7/10 is the Sega keeps rushing these games out and have little time to polished the game up. It also didn't help that it came out closely before Super Mario Bros. Wonder did; which is an far better game and worth $60 more than this game has. Superstar could've been on the same level as Mania or the Genesis Trilogy were in terms of good quality. But instead, it failed to capture that sentence. I am glad that classic Sonic is back. But I hope this isn't the end for it because it can't end like this.
big disagree on the graphics. i get that ur sick of pixel art (i am too) but this looks really generic and simplified to me. the detailed look of the old school pixel art is lost. i say, take th pixel art, upscale it so it looks better, adjust it a lil, and you would have a great modern 2d artstyle (think sonic 2 hd). or bring back th artstyle from th 3d sonic games (either adventure or boost games, they both look great)
After hearing about the problems that Superstars has, I didn't agree on getting it because I believed that it would be a waste of money, and like Riders DX I would rather play 3D Sonic games mostly because you have a better chance to see if you are running toward spikes, enemies, attacks from them, or bottomless pits and I'm more interested in seeing 3D graphics when playing videogames. I really like SA2, but mostly now in my adulthood because I sucked at playing it in my childhood because of the difficulty so I played SA1 more back then. I have been thinking of trying to do PC gaming sometime too, instead continuing to have consoles and portable devices be the only systems to do that on. When that time comes I'll try to find interesting fanmade Sonic games and also download the Sonic 06 fanmade remake from Chaos X,( Project-06) when the production of it becomes complete. That one definitely has very positive reviews.
It's unfortunates that people don't know that Arzest is actually old Sonic team devs who worked on the old sonic stage. But what's even worse is that Artoons and Arzest are literally the same company. So that means that the Sonic devs worked on good and disastrous Nintendo games. Also, Artoons makes better games than Arzest.

I could understand where people are coming from when they call this game a disappointment. A lot of people expected it to be one of the best 2d sonics, and it just didn’t live up to the hype. I really enjoyed this game, don’t get me wrong. But there is no question that it should’ve been better.

@a17yearoldonyoutubeluigi Disappointing doesn't mean the game is bad. It's just not as good as it could've been. Sonic 4 wasn't disappointing. It was just straight up bad because of how it fell in disgrace on what made the classic series so good. While Superstar looked like it was gonna turn out good, but to be disappointed that it wasn't exactly as good as we hope. It's still better than Sonic 4 for sure. But it's nowhere near as good as the other classic titles and especially Mania. Heck. Even something like Sonic Advance Trilogy or Rush Trilogy are better.
I haven’t beaten Superstars quite yet, and I gotta say, it’s a fun time! It’s a visual treat, and the controls feel really good! It’s not as good as Frontiers or Mania, but it’s a fun enough time (of course, that’s because I’ve avoided the multiplayer after hearing about all the issues it had, and if anyone had issues with it that made your experience bad, that’s valid).
I got this game the day it came out, I beat it in 2 days, replayed the main story as the other characters and currently have a total of 43 hours of playtime and I have to say,as someone who loves classic Sonic,has been waiting for a game like this since 2018, I thought while it doesn't reach the highs of something like Sonic 3k or mania, I thought it was a great modernization of the classic formula with some problems that can easily be ironed out in the future.
It's probably tied with Sonic 2 as my 5th favourite Sonic game and if I were to compare this game to something else it would probably be crash bandicoot 4,as I feel like both games generally understood how the gameplay of previous games worked, added some new bells, whistles and QoL stuff but also had some issues, that again can easily be fixed in a sequel or successor.
Also I would not call this the most disappointing Sonic game when stuff like the game that almost killed the series,06 and the unworthy sequel that is Sonic 4 episode 1 exist

Interesting take tbf. I must say I'm a huge fan of both original crash and Sonic Franchises. I found Crash 4 to be a flawed masterpiece whilst Sonic Superstars I found to be a massive disappointment.. The unnecessarily difficult boss fights just utterly spoil any sense of a fun and chilled out Sunday afternoon playthrough like I still have with the originals. That Golden Capital boss in particular is just utterly ridiculous. Not what Sonic was about at all. You really get the feel that someone who didn't have any nostalgia/investment about the original games had a heavy influence on this game...

While I have not played it yet, seeing the gameplay, I would not say it is that bad. It may not be as innovative as Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but it is not entirely awful.

That's because most Mario games don't rushed the heck out of them and they make an polished & solid quality titles. Yes. Not all are winners. Nintendo has rushed the games before and there are games they screwed up. Like Paper Mario: Sticker Star & Color Splash, the modern Mario Sports games and even Super Mario Sunshine are guilty examples of that. But that's only an small minor of low Mario games and none of them are what I would say are bad. Just mediocre & disappointing. But the rest are very high that outweighs the low.

This game is far from Awful, I just platinum’d it today and it was a blast to play through. My only problem was some of the bosses (Especially the final Eggman boss) But still a great game!
Honestly the chaod Emerald powers elevate the game for me alongside other QQL changes to the formula that made it a good game
I actually really like superstars, I like some of the new gimmicks and reintroduced gimmicks, such as the grind vines in the jungle level, and the whole sky temple level was pretty fun.
Sonic Superstars isn't that amazing but it's still a good Sonic game at least it's better than Sonic 4 but I wish it had a lot more content, I wish it had online multiplayer story mode but at least it gave us online mode with the battle mode but It's not enough.

With Super Mario Wonder, that game knew what it was wanting to be and went with it full send. Sonic Superstars on the other hand I feel doesn’t really know what it wants to be.
Sometimes it wants to evolve the classic formula, other times it just wants to be a standard 2d game with nostalgia thrown in for good measure (though nowhere near as much as Sonic Mania) or does things that feel more like a de-evolution . Sometimes it throws some cool ideas at the player, other times it plays things too safe and it’s rather redundant. The games high and low points are just all over the place, even more so than Sonic 1 and CD.
Overall, I’m still gonna pick Mania over this game. Yeah Superstars may have all original zones and less of a reliance on nostalgia, but Mania still had a lot of heart put into it and stuck with its intentions from start to finish. Superstars isn’t a disaster of a game like 06 or Sonic 4 sure, but even then that’s not a high bar to jump over nor should it be the standard you’re aiming for.

@@3dsfan2002 Funny you bring up the 3ds, because that’s legitimately what Superstars reminded me of. It feels like a lost 3ds game from 2015-16, especially since the 3ds had a massive slew of 2d platformers on it.
I’m one of the people who bought this game for $60, not knowing it would go on sale so quickly. I’m one of those people who likes bang for your buck for $60 games, and I beat this game in one sitting. I enjoyed it enough to do that, but the game is just okay. I did a repeat playthrough a few days later and that’s when I realized that the game isn’t great. I wish I waited til Black Friday to get it for $35.
I've been a fan of Demeech's content for over a year now, and I can confidently say that this is his worst review. many of your points are informative and make sense, specifically the game being $60 is hard to swallow for a casual sonic fan, as well as the bosses not being as good as mania. However, there are many statements that range from "This is VERY nitpicky" to "I don't think you understand sonic games". 8:50 for example makes no sense to describe a "POWER-UP", only using them when you want to, is a choice similar to how it is a choice to use the elephant fruit in Super Mario Wonder, so using it as a way to critic the game is very hypocritical. Furthermore, 11:05 stating that the game is too slow because of its high emphases on exploration is not the case because A) how fast the level goes is based off of how good you are (AKA the main reason to replay the games) and B) sonic 3&k also had a lot of exploration in the form of the big rings, and multiple routes. Also, a lot of the footage you use to describe the game isn't very... good, quite a bit of the time you miss a jump or get hit by an enemy saying that the game has bad level design, when really, it's your fault (some examples include, 7:00, 7:25, 9:30, and others I forgot). So, in conclusion, did this review change my positive view on the game? I don't know...

I cancelled the preorder of Sonic Superstars, cause as much as i love classic Sonic, i know i cannot trust him... Preodered both Mario Wonder and Sonic Superstars... But only cancelled one XD... 2 months later i finally bought it for half the price, brand new... and i still feel i paid too much for it... Mario Wonder on the other hand, its value can hardly be meassured in money, that game is amazing.

It really feels like the game could've been a lot better with just better planning. Couch co-op and competitive online modes are both things that require a lot of testing despite the fact that most people aren't even going to try them. Maybe that testing could've instead been used to ensure that the boss fights are actually fun or something.

Sonic Superstars was far from Bad, it’s just ALRIGHT. These Classic Sonic Games never stray too far from whats already been done in the past which can result in a very safe and boring game. They need to innovate on Classic Sonic and ensure a level of quality for them to truly improve.

I feel like Sega thinks everyone would eat up anything related to Classic Sonic after Mania was well received, so we ended up with Origins and this.
Honestly the worst aspect of this game is the $60 price point. The physics are spot on, and the graphics are great on the next gen versions. I do appreciate the criticism that this game receives bc I always want Sega to do better tho.

Even as a lifelong Sonic fan, I just haven’t been able to bring myself to get through over half of this game, it just isn’t important or high-budget enough to feel like an installment of one of the most successful gaming series, hell, one of the most successful franchises of all time! I know this isn’t really new for Sonic, but this one just feels so “Oh, hey. This happened”. It feels kinda like a mobile game. It hasn’t been horrible, just not that interesting.
One thing that baffled me about the game is that it doesn't do that thing where the camera pans to show more of the direction you're running in.
Almost every 2D game does this because it makes it way easier to see where you're going.
(Wonder actually does this, it's very subtle but if you pay attention you'll notice the screen scrolls to show more of the direction you're running in)

Not gonna lie, I have a soft spot for this game. I think the controls are nice and fluid, the level design is actually pretty creative I think. But the music is very hit or miss, and the mania team should’ve absolutely come back for superstars, and game could’ve used the modern designs instead of bringing back classic sonic again, and I think the game could’ve had a better style like with shantae half genie hero and 2d sprite in a 3d world that looks 2d.

I'd like to share my first experience with this game.
I got the switch version, and I started a co-op playthrough with my friend.
We frequently found it impossible to keep up with whichever of us was playing Sonic, and would have to keep teleporting for extended periods of time because there was no way for both of us to *exist* on screen. It didn't feel any better than playing as Tails in the old games. So we essentially had to ban the drop dash to play as Sonic.
Our time was... decent. But something absolutely atrocious happened.
Another segment of failing to keep up with the other person because of how the camera works occurred, and somehow, out of nowhere, I respawned in as Tails and my physics were entirely messed up. My character was slowed down, they couldn't jump higher than captain toad, and movement and traversal was impossible.
And that's not even the worst part. This didn't go away upon death or restarting, and when I got in a spin-tube, my character was too slow to get out of it, and the camera focused on me instead of my friend. This means that we were softlocked.
The game completely broke upon doing something that would be happening *frequently* throughout an entire playthrough, and became unplayable due to the bug. This is not acceptable.
Going through single player, it's the most average classic sonic game ever. Levels are not interesting at all, and feel like something that you would find in a Roblox Sonic Level Maker. It'd be one of the more competent creators for sure, but still nothing stand out.
This game is not worth 60 dollars, nor would I even say it's worth 30. It's uninteresting. Absolutely nothing of note happens. There's no memorable bosses, they all are either waiting simulators with easy attacks or die in 4 seconds. The levels are more generic than even Sonic Lost World, which at least had moments of spectacle. The only level that did something interesting was the level where you had to play in reverse.
So, just go play Mario Wonder, Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe, Spark the Electric Jester, Freedom Planet, Megaman/X/Z/ZX, Hollow Knight, or Pizza Tower. Sonic is dead. The management is too scared to give developers time to innovate. Not that they should need any extra time, because incredible innovations have come from games with much less time. This series, just like pokemon, is in a mechanical drought, and it's time to admit that.
Goodbye, Sonic. You only exist in fangames now.
Sonic may be dead for you but for me he isn't. I had a similar mindset when we got the first sonic movie trailer with the bad design but years went on and from some of the stuff we got, it has been getting a bit better. Examples include Sonic movie 1 & 2, Prime, Frontiers/DLC, and Dream Team.
In terms of my experience of Superstars I thought it was a 7/10. Had some fun with this game but does has its faults in certain areas. If there's future dlc planned, hopefully the devs can improve on the elements that didn't work and make it better.

Here my review on sonic super stars keep in mind this one be spoiler heavy on what the game have and I will do some comparasion to some games but I will say right now, no, I will consider it the most disappointing sonic game that will go to sonic forces.
I will start with the presentation and story, the story is alright is pretty straight foward and what I kinda expect from a classic sonic game I wouldn't call it a bad one, the game look great, personally I have no issues with retro look but I glad super stars took what I like to call modern retro look like mega man 11 the character look modern but keep their retro feel to them.
Gameplay is solid, controls are good and level design is fine for the most part granted there are the exception when isn't good but is overall hit or miss, the chaos emeralds are have mostly good stages and unique gimmicks but like demeech said it should have a mapping option and the powers have some that not working and while I can't whine about it the last one isn't too worth it, character work well enough but I say the non sonic one look like they got less care but one thing I can't forgive on one of the acts of the water levels you can die from drowing after you beat the level.
My main gripe with super stars is the music is defently like wonder's bosses having my second least favorite only behind the dark brotherhood ost, the bosses are mostly fine but the last bosses aren't good especially the autoscroller with fang which is just a chore altogheter, the co op isn't good either they I get that sonic is the fastest but should made sure the rest will keep on his mobility.
Overall super stats is the weakest of the good recent sonic games frontiers and mania are the better deals, as a whole I say is arzest's best game but still can't rank it more than mid A tier.
As for your vid I say it kept a pretty solif pace but I say the part of the story was a bit off but not bad and your collab was great one too.
Super Stars was ok imo. Though it needed a little more work considering some of the deaths I've suffered in the game makes no sense.
This game to me is fun, but not the best 2D Sonic game. And I'm a huge Sonic fan who grew up playing the Sonic Rush Games. Asside from the issues with the bosses & lack of banger music, it has more compitence than Mario Strikers Battle Leauge, & the Sonic 4 games. It also feels better to control than Sonic Forces ever did.

I quite enjoy Superstars. Bosses are a lot easier once you level up to super status. Not a fan of the big bosses having no checkpoints though. That is my biggest gripe. Online is a joke addition though.

idk I just played it for the first time 2 days ago at my friends house in co op. It was pretty good (for the most part) however it was very obviously not designed with multiplayer in mind. My biggest complaint is that were was absolutely no respawning during boss fights even the really long multi phase boss fights, which lead to just one person having to hard carry for most of the late game boss fights. The only exception was the final boss, but that had its own jank issues. I think the first phase of the final boss was pretty confusing initially and way too long.
Overall I had a good time with it and consider it a pretty good Sonic game, but definitely should not have been 60$ I think 40$ would've been a much more fair base-price, but my friend was the one who owned the game so I might be more biased in my opinion, not being the one that bought the game.
I think definitely worth your time if you catch it on sale.

I bought Mario Wonder and Sonic Superstars in the same transaction from Best Buy. I loved Wonder enough that I 100%ed a solo run and am in the process of doing a multiplayer (online enabled) run with my brother.
Conversely, I played Superstars with my brother. As it just so happened, the first stage I played was that frustrating amusement park-style level. After we beat that level, there was the forced solo Amy section, and after that, my brother took back his copy of Superstars. I never opened my copy and took it back to Best Buy for a full refund.

I'm not big into Sonic the Hedgehog, to be honest. However, the video had some awesome hilarious jokes. I feel like a new Mario Baseball game will get revealed at the February Nintendo Direct and released sometime in June because since we have Mario Strikers, Mario Golf, and Mario Tennis on the Nintendo Switch, Mario Baseball is the only Mario Sports series left that the Nintendo Switch needs. Mario Baseball is my most requested Nintendo Switch game and it’s pretty much the last Nintendo Switch game I need before the next Nintendo console comes around. I don't care if it gets “Free Updates” but I just want to see a Mario Baseball game for the Nintendo Switch so badly because it's my favorite Mario Sports series of all time. We’ll see what happens in February.

Crap game imo. It has a few good zones, bad bosses and a few bosses with the biggest difficulty jumps ever experienced. The final bosses simply do not respect your time.Mixed in with glitches and lack of polish and I just didnt enjoy it much.

@@Demeech I would say it's better than Sonic 4 but.... I had more fun with 4. It was fun to speed run and replay. Sonic Superstars is not, even if the overall package is better.
@TheLonelyGoomba I will agree Superstar is nowhere near as good as other Sonic titles like Mania, the Genesis Trilogy or something like Generations. But saying the game was crap is pretty invalid. It's far from awful. Just more like an meh game at best.
Definitely my favourite 2D Sonic Game since Sonic 3.
And even it´s weakest Zone "Press Factory" is still somehow better than Sandopolis.

Sonic Fire and Ice
Sonic Shattered Crystal
Sonic Racing Transformed 3DS
That’s all I could think of. And all of these were bad.

I like Superstars okay, but I should’ve loved it. I’m waiting for reviews from now on. Sega has been really mismanaging projects lately. The early release states of Colors Ultimate and Origins, and now this. They’ve been handed great concepts on a platter and keep failing to deliver.

Epic crossover aside, I definitely don’t think this is the most disappointing Sonic game by a long shot, just the most “underwhelming” in which it had greater potential but only comes as just pretty okay and not offensively bad
I guess I'll be the one to say it people simply hate superstars because it's not mania 2 sure boss battles are mid but the rest of superstars was good
I think I agree more with you than Riders, the game isn't anything special but I enjoy the time I spend with it (at least the levels in the Story Mode). 'A little underwhelming' sure, 'not good' or 'a massive disappointment' I say nah.

The bosses in this game are enough to dock a point or two out of ten. Then the Sonic 4-style music takes another point or half a point off. I don't know how that repetitive boss theme was approved because it's utter shite.

The fact this game was $60 was absolutely criminal. I could accept this game if it was $10 like most other trash Sonic games.
I played a bit of this through a friend’s steam account and just could’t stomach another playthrough. It’s not a terrible game, but it’s annoying gimmicks and waiting simulator bosses just turned me off. Compared to what we got with Mania it can be seen as a disappointment. I’m glad I didn’t buy this.

Because they wanted to do their own thing for a bit (penny's big breakaway) however this game is born from an unfinished idea for a 2.5D classic Sonic game that the head of Sonic team wanted to make with evening star but the development didn't go far before they wanted to do their own thing, however both the head of Sonic team and Christian Whitehead said that they're still on good terms so they could easily come back

Sonic is one of my favorite franchises but i want to like this game but it makes me mad like it took mania and went you know what sonic 1 is a good template for levels. First half is alright when we get to later levels they are not fun or horrible like press factory. The bosses are horrible
As a sonic fan that absolutely did not like and even distaste Sonic Frontiers for providing a bare bones unfinished sandbox game I find that Superstars Whille severely having its down sides, looking at you Final bosses! And not so stellar music but overall as a fan of both the 2D and 3D sonic titles I find that this game with a bit of a *PLUS* expansion found in Maina I think this game can provide a better game to make a better impression

If I have to give rating for Superstar, it would be an 6/10. It's not an bad game at all and it's better than Sonic 4 at least. However this game has so many faults and big ones at that in which turns me off on replaying this game. The level designs are hit and miss, the gimmicks behinds some levels don't match well, the camera is way too close in which is hard to see your surroundings, the Emeralds power up; while cool idea in theory, is very undercook, the co-op mode sucks, the bosses are the absolute worst due to some that takes forever to kill and some are brutal because they will have many BS moments or just one shot you with horrendous hit boxes that's very obnoxious, Trip's and Last Story segment aren't that good and the game is unpolished once again. Seriously, if there's one thing that keeps most Sonic games from being over an 7/10 is the Sega keeps rushing these games out and have little time to polished the game up. It also didn't help that it came out closely before Super Mario Bros. Wonder did; which is an far better game and worth $60 more than this game has. Superstar could've been on the same level as Mania or the Genesis Trilogy were in terms of good quality. But instead, it failed to capture that sentence. I am glad that classic Sonic is back. But I hope this isn't the end for it because it can't end like this.

big disagree on the graphics. i get that ur sick of pixel art (i am too) but this looks really generic and simplified to me. the detailed look of the old school pixel art is lost. i say, take th pixel art, upscale it so it looks better, adjust it a lil, and you would have a great modern 2d artstyle (think sonic 2 hd). or bring back th artstyle from th 3d sonic games (either adventure or boost games, they both look great)

After hearing about the problems that Superstars has, I didn't agree on getting it because I believed that it would be a waste of money, and like Riders DX I would rather play 3D Sonic games mostly because you have a better chance to see if you are running toward spikes, enemies, attacks from them, or bottomless pits and I'm more interested in seeing 3D graphics when playing videogames. I really like SA2, but mostly now in my adulthood because I sucked at playing it in my childhood because of the difficulty so I played SA1 more back then. I have been thinking of trying to do PC gaming sometime too, instead continuing to have consoles and portable devices be the only systems to do that on. When that time comes I'll try to find interesting fanmade Sonic games and also download the Sonic 06 fanmade remake from Chaos X,( Project-06) when the production of it becomes complete. That one definitely has very positive reviews.
It's unfortunates that people don't know that Arzest is actually old Sonic team devs who worked on the old sonic stage.
But what's even worse is that Artoons and Arzest are literally the same company. So that means that the Sonic devs worked on good and disastrous Nintendo games.
Also, Artoons makes better games than Arzest.
I don't think they've ever made a good game. Their best is probably Hey Pikmin which is just OK.
