I would not trust just anyone to do it, and certainly not everyone can do it well. Personally I don't like painted calipers. My car was actually supposed to come with unpainted calipers but they screwed up at the factory so I got red calipers. I don't really care that much, but it's technically supposed to be an optional thing with black painted wheels instead of grey and red painted calipers for $500. If you want something I guess you'll pay what they are asking, but $800 just to repaint some calipers seems like a bit of wasted money. Even more so since he did it on his wife's car and she doesn't like it and didn't approve of the $800 purchase. But that sounds like a drop in the bucket cost for them.
I also wonder why he painted the parking brake calipers... looks odd.

I agree 100% on the yellow calipers for a gray car! i has a red Mazdaspeed and painted them yellow in a few hours with a brush, which I think is better than spraying. Red is soo overdone and too ricer looking wannabe.

To do them right you won't spend $5, but you also would never spend more than $100 in tools, paint, etc. However, the TIME is costly and that is what you pay for mostly when you take your car to be worked on by a pro. Labor is costly!

High temp paint (engine paint) Is cheap, he got severely ripped off. This job could easily be done for less than $75, and that is on the high end of the scale, and as far as the lettering? Easy, use a pencil grinder, and remove the paint.
royalCOW buddy it costs like 4k to paint an entire car, the amount of prep to put engine paint on those brand new calipers is next to nothing. probably 2 hours of labour if theyre slow and $20-30 in supplies on the high end.

Axel Compton you should watch the video again, he clearly says he didn't buy new calipers he got the old ones painted. High intensity caliper paint isn't ever more than $50, and that's an extremely high max.

No, that will bubble and chip because of the heat. If you use cheap paint it will probably discolor and start on fire. Powder coating them is the best way to go.

+Ruben I used factory engine paint that could withstand temps above 500 degrees Fahrenheit. My brakes haven't chipped in over 3 years. Layer 3 coats and your set.
ZynovFTW Could have, sure, but what about when they inevitably take it back to tesla for brake vibration/pulsation complaints ( I mean, look at the wear pattern on that rotor) and tesla tells that they're not liable for the repair because professionals werent involved. Brake service from the dealer on that vehicle is probably around $1200. At least in this situation they would be able to work something out with the shop

Sometimes people do make enough that it's more reasonable to have someone else do the job, and pay for it. Look, he doesn't look like a mechanic type, and I doubt he has all the jacks, jack stands, masking tape, cleaners, the proper paint....his neighbors would give him weird looks while he's doing the job...$800....I'll work an hour overtime a day for a week and pay to have it done hopefully well, and save my back and knees from further wear and tear. Look the time spent for him to go and gather up all the stuff he needs would probably be 2-3 hours....that's 1/3rd the $800 (of overtime pay) for me.

kdsdr They're just calipers. it's just like painting a car. When you take the car to be painted they wont use secret special Tesla paint. The only difference between having it done and doing yourself is that you have to take the wheels off and depending on the quality you might have to take off the caliper to paint it completely or just simply paint over it while mounted on the disk and only paint what shows. If i had that amount to paint just calipers I would do it but I don't and I know how to do them myself so thats why im whining lol

maybe a professional hack job.. 6 calipers, just a brake pad service(remove and replace) should cost more, ~300, and a brake flush, usually 70-100 atleast, not including the painting and brake fluid.... thats atleast 375..

Alex MacLean I do agree on getting things done correctly, and always pay extra for my car to be the same. I just simply think, that they knew he did not have much car knowledge and used this to their advantage, what a shame.
Daniel Fl. it's the exact same work, you can't paint the caliper on the car. unless your a hack. look up repair instructions for a "brake pad service" or "remove brake caliper" it's the same steps, except to remove them completely from the car you would disconnect the brake fluid line
So it's actually more work, and if you open the brake fluid line, you must do a brake flush to get the air out of the system.

I personally would have kept it the colour it was, black and grey colours are good, or should of got navy blue, or midnight blue instead for that. I would think it would go nice with the car, at least spend a lot of money for something that matches the car.

0:40 If you want your brake calipers red just spray paint them. My papa did it as a DIY and has had not one issue. He paid around $8 for the paint. That's only $792 that you save though.
you got ripped off. gotta look up how to do stuff on your own before ever going to a manufacturer or business when it comes to cars. Probably could've either done it yourself or got it done much cheaper. It does look better with the red calipers though.

yeah $800 is way to much and 3 days to complete it. should of been $300-500 and only take 2 days max.
For the time it took I would have billed about $200 (£150-£175) but maybe the UK thinks differently.

The red calipers look good. They do make the car look more like a guys car. The last and most important thing to me is take a look at that brake rotor, it's shot. I see gouges (5:55) too deep to be turned and this rotor looks warped. A brake job will cost a lot more than $800 but well worth it.

Twilight_Flame87 it is not that easy. You have to remove the tires, and make sure that you don't spray something important. You don't know what you are saying
haha its soooooo easy to do!! ive done it a bunch of times. but in saying this im self taught when it comes to cars and have been working on them for a while now. but $800 it a total rip off for red caliper paint and a stencil for the tesla wording. this would of costed me no more than $20 for the paint and $5 for the stencil to be cut and an hour tops for labor.

Depending on how much time you are willing to take (masking things off) you can paint calipers yourself for like ~$15 (that's two can's of red caliper paint, and some masking tape).

The photo editing software I used for that picture made the colors look different, they really are the same color. The overall picture looked better like this so I left it. But I see what you are saying.

I just happened on your channel because I love Tesla's. But regarding your red "shoes" (Break shoes lol). You can chat with your wife about one of the most influential and iconic fashion shoes... Louboutin (by Christian Louboutin). I'm sure she is familiar. Louboutin is famous for having a red high gloss lacquered bottom on all of their brand's shoes. VERY expensive, very sexy. A high fashion women could be in an all grey business suit, but still with just that little splash of deep red as she walks. Or a green summer dress, (any color really), but still that stripe of red. It's a perfect fashion statement for her car. ;-) I've always loved watching my woman walk in them. Her car will look great with them too. Best of luck!

My friend just bought a 10 year old Saturn with 78,000 miles at a police auction for $900 (nine hundred dollars) He spent another $15 on plugs, $60 on hoses, $26 on belts and $63 on a battery. It runs well. The grand total was $1064. It WILL get him through college. Nice looking red calipers...
You seriously got ripped off dude. The materials only shouldn't be more then $50, maybe $100 for really high end paint and clear. Shouldn't have been longer then a day to do this also. Remove calipers and blast them clean, then paint.

As a Tesla owner, I completely agree about it not being an indicator of wealth, but chucking $800 on changing the colour of the brake calipers....
Given the technology in the Tesla - this has to be the most easy job going. Jack up the car and place axle stands for secure propping up of car remove wheel, clean brake caliper with scrub pad - don't use any fluids as this may contaminate the disc pads etc, mask off disc, and area on the brake assembly that you don't want painted. Next using metal/car paint spray primer onto brake caliper let dry then using metal/car paint spray with gloss red primer let dry and add as many coats of red primer as needed. When dry remove all masking material and . Do the same for all four wheels. Total cost for work that can be completed in one afternoon is Maximum $200 if you do it yourself plus the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

I was able to find your license plate easily and when you were showing your wife the brakes I saw your street name in the corner. MAYBE GLUE A $100 bill on the face of the calipers and then clear coat ? seeing the $cash on each would look cool and save you $400 as well :)

Not to mention that would be a really good father/son moment and learning experience for him: Priceless.
Would have taught a valuable lesson and probably netted you alot more views since people could watch it being done.
100% agreed with the wife, it makes the car look like a much cheaper ricer. next you should make a video putting racing decals, racing stripes, a differently colored spoiler, a v8 engine noise generator in it, maybe paint it gold. :P

The red calipers look great! Good choice even if the Mrs. disagrees. My wife is the same exact way. Anything to do with improving performance or appearance is a waste of money to her.
Your wife was right. Being quoted US$2300 and US$800 for red callipers was indeed a waste of money. Had my wheels professionally powder coated gloss black £400 ( approx US$500) and they hand painted the callipers for free ! Granted they didn’t get 10 coats of super magic paint but 6 months on they look as good as new. ! Listen to your wife !

I could never live my life like that, being scared of everything. I’ve seen so many videos were people talk about not being in “safe neighborhoods”. Meanwhile they are in well above what’s considered to be a safe neighborhood
$800 you are kidding! All you do is take off each wheel, clean the callipers with mineral turps (or a wax and grease remover) maby a light sand then a couple of dollars of paint job done even redo the writhing in black.

My car came with red brembo calipers.. Honestly the car you have doesn't necessarily mean your "rich"/well-off" unless you paid cash. Paying $1000+ a month for a payment doesn't help either. Growing up, kids always said my family was rich because of all the nice things we had but my dad explained that buying all these things of course cost money and that's money you don't have any more (unless of course your buying things for assets or investments).
