- A police chase which started with a liquor store robbery in Bowmanville Monday night ended in tragedy some 20 minutes later when a suspect fleeing police entered Highway 401 in the wrong direction and caused a pileup which killed an infant and the child's grandparents, as well as the suspect, investigators say.
Officers with Durham police responded to a robbery at an LCBO location near Green Road and Highway 2 at around 7:50 p.m. after they were alerted to the incident by an off-duty officer.
According to a police source who spoke to CP24, an off-duty Durham police officer noticed the robbery in progress and confronted a male suspect, who then brandished a knife. At that point, the source said, the off-duty officer alerted police.

I can't even begin to imagine the absolute horror of learning that your child and both your parents are gone. I don't know how someone recovers from something like that.
This brings back such horrible memories for me how I lost my friend 20 yrs ago. Drunk driver was driving the wrong way and collied with him head on. This was like early in the morning when he was going home after his overnight shift.

With the technology we have right now there shouldnt be need of chases. Use a gps, the thousands of cameras or follow them with a helicopter. Police chases just put everybody else in the street in danger.

Actually they were instructed to keep going as they were still within their jurisdiction. Also, by having their lights on it helped warn at least a few drivers. Another thing is if the criminal was okay with robbing, threatening multiple people with a knife and then driving on the wrong side of the highway then it wouldn't matter if the police were pursuing or not. Those criminals were hell bent on getting away.

You have the van’s license plate number which will help identify the driver, and you have the Lcbo surveillance video to much the thief with the license owner you collected at U-Haul . In at least one witness dash cam video - as shown in THIS video - a police vehicle was shown ALSO going the wrong way on the highway ! WHY would the police continue the chase after the vehicle, ONTO the highway ? Wasn't ONE wrong way vehicle bad enough without the police joining in to add to the chaos ?!! Really ?
The police vehicle has lights and a siren...It can warn drivers up ahead that danger is coming.

Any pursuit into on coming traffic should be against protocol. You NEVER chase into on coming traffic.

The moment the suspect entered the highway in the wrong direction, the pursuit should have been called off! A bottle of liquor was not worth a family's life! The officer responsible should face consequences but we all know the mantra: we investigated ourselves and found no wrongdoing. 😢
The CP24 can't even get her facts right. The accident happened on Hwy 401 not Hwy 400. What's with blaming the Police before the facts are in. The driver of the van made the choice to go the wrong way not the Police. The driver would have had a head on whether or not the cops were chasing him.

RIGHT in the video ( from a witness dash cam ) it shows a police vehicle also going the wrong way on the highway, in hot pursuit ! That was just reckless. ONE wrong way vehicle is bad enough, but being chased by a cop would just make him drive even faster.

Why police chased on a wrong way? Do they really know the protocols in that kind of situation? A innocent family die for a big police mistake.
The police should have blocked all exits and police at other end of highway set spike strips . The fact there is no coordination of police is issue they need to be able to block exits and have signs that can alert drivers pull to side of road park until emergency vehicles pass if they maybe install sign boards to alert people and have an emergency light that tells drivers pull over for emergency vehicles then all could be alerted in future.
Also can news follow up reports with names as people have anxiety not knowing who it is and who it isnt . Same with please follow up with meaford case cause the one that I reported about there and also in dundalk hamilton ones they were also involved in other cases and might be them so find out names in case police were after them cause people need to know names who it is and isnt .

There is no reason for high speed chases. I don't believe any vehicle should be able to go over 110km. Emergency vehicles obviously should have higher speeds...this in turn will allow police to overtake any speeding car. Problem solved.

It’s a tragic incident that caused innocent lives including an infant. It’s not worth the chase, however the moment the robber entered the hi way it became inevitable to keep pursuing him because he is driving the wrong way and it put people’s lives in danger.
Our stupid police will let the car thieves go , even advise us to leave the keys at door. But they will chase down a petty crime thief. This is as much on the police as its on the guy who was running away.

Something I have never heard about through the mainstream news media is the fact that low income seniors in Ontario have had free dental for at least 3 years...I had all my teeth removed and a full denture replacement done last year.
