I've owned all three at one point, but I sold the S/and 52m neck version as my original 50m version was the one I used and have used all the time. It's a fantastic travel guitar, go anywhere guitar both playability wise and sound wise, unmatched in my opinion. Just hope they make a 4th generation version with strap locks, built-in MP3 player, tap /percussion pad / upgraded effects, and sound module while keeping the design, which is great Here's hoping, Yamaha!

I originally bought the older SLG110 a decade ago. Loved it. Now have SLG200 steel string AND nylon. Main reason? Convenience. They can do everything, and the onboard tuner and effects are great. The design is so lightweight and comfortable, that everything else starts to feel really heavy and cumbersome. The 200 has been around for about 7-8 years now, so I’d be expecting an upgraded version soon? One upgrade that would make it a show stopper would be the addition of at least one electric guitar pickup, wired through the onboard preamp? If that signal could also be blended to the under saddle pickup already installed, it would truly be an almost unbeatable guitar for practice and even stage performance. YAMAHA, PLEASE ADD A MINI HUMBUCKER OR TWO!!!!😎
Go take a look at the pickguard mounted Lollar gold foils for a single coil tone or Johnny Smiths for that humbucker, I got both and it bumped all my other guiters back onto the wall a couple years back and that's where they have stayed most of the time.
I constantly play and use the SL G 200S, for teaching, gigging, on and off stage. the built in chorus produces a good sound of a much more expensive guitar. Fantastic guitar, light, portable.
Hi. Do you get a loud hiss when you switch it on whilst plugged into an amp? I use an Acus amp, and I find the hiss quite distracting and now considering selling it. Thanks
I really enjoyed this guitar until the preamp went out...I have been waiting for a little over two years for a replacement part...even my local music store has stated it is on "back order", but not certain if and when this will be available, because like me, Yamaha has not responded to repeated requests...it was great while it worked..now it is just semi-expensive wall art...just be aware of the potential down side.
I bought one SLC200 Nylon, I agree with you on the portability, sounds and price, but there is one thing that I don't like: the contoured frame. Simply, one cannot hold it comfortably to the chest! I prefer to a frame with less contoured or just straight frame, like a real classic guitar.
I'm *so* close to buying one of these! Iy really ticks all my boxes and I know I'll love it, and more importantly, play it. Just the one fly in the ointment - the PRS SE 245 Standard Tobacco Sunburst! What to do?! Great presentation BTW - nicely done!
Value is so good, and I think a better, more acoustic sound than the Acoustasonic by Fender, or Godns hybrid... And it's cheaper. What am I missing here? The Fender at $2000+ is insane. Sure they are a bit louder unplugged, but unplugged electric anything doesn't sound great so it is better off silent so you can play in quiet situations.
Actually the SLG200S has indeed replaced my other guitar for the most part, I did some mods and now it sports Lollar gold foil pickguard mount at the neck and a Johnny Smith with the same mounting at the bridge. Jazz, rock, folk, prog, country, bluegrass, I use it for all of them and it has become my most versatile guitar. Plays better than my Ibanez shred machine and that guitar plays like a dream. Had to modify the strap screws a bit though to get them to stay where they are when the upper bout is locked, the only drawback I've found.
I have the 2oon and I dig it- especially if you get decent headphones that is designed to separate the frequencies- working on getting a 200s. strap nuts are annoying and the upper arm comes undone a lot but all in all the purchase is worth it. It has a pretty unique sound you have to play it for yourself to really get it.

I've had my silent nylon for over 15 years. One of the first models, it only has reverb and your standard bass and treble. Paid about us500 new. Guess they haven't come down in price. 😳
I love the concept but I think they should update it. Maybe make a version with a wider nut.. Also you can't do the simplest percussion like a kick.. but it's fine for such design.
Correct, as they have no resonating body to get feedback from like say a hollowbody. I think it's basically an electric guitar that sounds like an acoustic essentially but without any magnets.

Godin sounds more natural, but it's not worth doubling the price for this added quality. Yamaha has more "clogged" transducers, so to speak. A modern, standardized product was needed and compatible with current digital interfaces, especially for online posting. It's unfortunate that the sound has the footprint of the hall and is not transmitted directly digitally, check RUclips for minimal loss of sonic quality. On a linear without compensations, the human ear does not feel differences... Other parameters enter into the equation, such as the lightness of pressing the strings and the fingerboard alloys that give a pressing force small, leading to a higher speed in execution. The quality of the strings also enters into the equation. I would choose Yamaha for home and for study, being aware that I will never end up on the concert stage. Even so, I would not be embarrassed with Yamaha.
Is the fret width on the nylon models of these newer Silent Guitars the same as steel acoustic guitars? Because from what I see in this video, the nylon model's fret width is the same like most nylon acoustic guitar, which is wider than steel acoustic or electric guitars. I seem to recall the older nylon models Silent Guitars having 2 options for fret width: there's the narrower version and there's the wider version (110N & 110NW). Did Yamaha drop the narrow fret width for the nylon version on these new models?
I bought the nylon full-width neck version. The action is horrible, borderline unplayable. There seems to be lots of saddle height to remove, but I don't understand why it would leave the factory in this nearly unuseable way. Anyone else have this experience?
I tried one today and really liked it, my only question is about how versatile it is - I was hoping it might be able to effectively function as both travel guitar and secondary electric, given the number of comparisons to having the feel of an electric. Another video I've seen implied you don't get much feedback from it, which made me wonder if you could use it with a standard guitar amp, but when I asked the guy in the guitar shop about running it through my Marshall MG, he advised staying away from crunch or overdrive tones, which I use quite a lot ... Has anyone else had any experience with this - or regularly (and successfully) uses an SLG200S with heavy overdrive tones?
Personally, I would just hear it before taking it for granted that you can’t plug it into a Marshall. I’ve heard that it does great with overdrive especially for an acoustic, so it’s one persons word against anothers
It does fine as long as you roll it to the piezos and not the mic, just going to have a sound its own, not humbucker or single coil. Not going to get all the rock tones though, at least I didn't, so I went to Lollar and picked up a pickguard mount gold foil for the neck and a Johnny Smith humbucker (same mounting) for the bridge now it keeps up with my Ibanez shredder no problem no matter the gain and the versatility is insane, I can go from Cat Stevens to George Benson to Nunio Bettencourt with the stomp of a foot switch and a finger flick without changing guitars. Looks cooler than hell too with both of the pickups on it. Toss a set of locking tuners on it as well and it's gig ready at the finest of venues.
I would buy both. The Nylon and the steel strung. But what is holding me back? - The price! Much to high for this Acoustic Guitar-Derivate. Would take both nylon and steel for the price of one. ;-) Btw. the sound of both guitars is great. Played them in the local music store......but the price....
They cost as much as a Mexican strat and have high end acoustic modeling on board. Innovation like that isn't cheap. You can't really expect it to be much cheaper than this.
i really wish Yamaha released some RGX style guitars again... their 13.5 radius is super comfortable (and obviously i wish i had enough extra cash to get one of those silent guitars... they sound killer with pedals :D)
I purchased one of these guitars so i could practice and not annoy the wife ! i was going to build one as a project. After seeing demonstrations like this ,and as we know Yamaha make fine musical instruments i shed out £600 +.Because i have other quality acoustic guitars i only use it through head phones i must say i was very very disappointed so i purchase the headphones Yamaha recommended still not impressed it sounds absolutely nothing like what you hear on the demonstrations which will be played through an amp. It may be a very good and versatile guitar for gigging and playing through an amp but through head phones "alone" i dont think its worth the price, certainly not for my application .
I just purchased one of the SLG200N models used online due to all of the good reviews on RUclips. I would highly recommend playing one in person before purchasing. I have owned many guitars over the last 20 years and this is by far the worst guitar I have ever owned. It is not far from being unplayable. I want to sell it but wouldn't want the bad karma from selling it to someone.... Buyer beware, try it in person!

you can also power it using usb hub or usb port on laptop... using barrell usb cable..

Talking about portability as a selling point is quite ridiculous considering you need an amp to get any quality sound at all.
My wife just bought one for me. I love it, but plan to pay an extra $150 to $200 to get it set up right, unless you can do it yourself.
What was wrong with it out of the box?
