Slow Mo References

- I've been asked numerous times how I do certain actions and rather than taking ages to explain it I thought it would just be easier to slow down a few of the more action-heavy videos (and some of my favourites too) for other animators that need help with morphs or are just curious as to how they are done. Anyway hope you enjoy and there are new videos coming soon!
Film Notes:
- These videos are played at about a quarter of the regular speed (6fps) and are slow enough to see each individual picture.
- The three clips are taken from Green With Envy, a scene towards the end of my Compilation 3 and Shockwave Manipulation.
General FAQ:
- I use an oil-based clay called Belgrave but it's only sold in Australia.
- I film at 24fps (normally)
- I use a Canon MV700i DV Camcorder connected to my computer through a firewire cable.
- I use Stop Motion Pro V6 HD to make my animations. Go to www.stopmotionp... to check it out.
- All the sound effects in this movie were obtained from www.soundsnap.com
- Want to learn how to make something seemingly fly? Check out my flying tutorial here: www.mamshmam.co...
- Want to learn how to make these? Just getting started and don't know what programs to use? Check out my basic stop-motion tutorial for Macs and PC's here: www.mamshmam.co...
I only use my hands so if you look close enough on some characters you'll see fingerprints quite a bit.
fantastic, very interesting to see this process slowed up, plenty to learn from this video..
5 stunning stars..
you are truly gifted in the art of claymation
that was great to watch...thanks for sharing the slo mo.....
Awesome...Like always...
dude if this is stop motion then i am amazed, yuo are awesome, plz share your secret. but if it is animation then tell me the software/programme
this reminds me of avatar and the legend of aang where they bend the elements but instead they ebnd clay :L
nice
how you do that you have clay hung in the air?
Thanks Mamshmam, but were is the vid?
Yeah, i think so, too^^
Like bending o_o
I know. I know its not real and im really sorry. I caught myself reading one and didnt want to take chances. Thats why I wish people would stop posting them. As again Im sorry.
just over a thousand frames. The normal clips put together run for 40 seconds.
Looks similar to avatar LOL
Wat
Errr what are you on about? If there's any video like this on TV then it's not the original. I've never heard of that program so if they've been showing my videos then I'd like to know. Also, that camcorder was released a little over a year ago so if I were to upgrade I wouldn't get that.
I'm not sure if there's going to be a Compilation 4 just yet, depends if I have enough time or not. If I did, I would put off releasing the extended clips in Previews and it would probably be released around the same time as the third Compilation, not the first 2.
It's not so much planning the liquidy movements, but practicing them. So if you can get the right amount of movement between frames and shape the clay so it appears to be liquidy then chances are it'll turn out that way, but as I said just practice it.
oh right, my apologies. I thought that was a straight out comment because it showed up that way. Anyway, yeah, it's bad because you can't set a frame rate and the pictures can only go small enough to achieve a frame rate of about 8fps.
Movie maker is one of the worst programs you could use to make a claymation. Look at my tutorial on how to make a claymation in the video description and it will link you to a couple of good free animating programs.
uuuuuu the dog! can u make a uxorial go how to make the mamshmam clay dog?
@TheFallenKing1000 Sorry about that, it's to an old link in the forums that no longer exist. I plan on redoing the tutorials plus a few more. I'll probably upload them here instead when that happens.
That's because you didn't read the video description for this video. Similarly, you didn't read the title of Everything Never Published when you commented on that video as well.
soundsnap (link in the description) but unfortunately you only get 5 free sounds a month now where as it used to be unlimited.
Did you even read the video description... It's not meant to be taken as a proper claymation, it's a guide for other animators.
Thanks this helps big time! i make my own clay animations so...Cheeers!!!

At a normal 24fps takes about 18-24 hours just to film not including editing.
I slowed it down, which is why the sound effects are still there.
how did i get here?
It's in the vid description.
I already have them ;)
Video description ;)
Thanks Apophic :)
This vid is for demonstrative purposes so I reduced the video from my normal 24fps to 6fps to allow people to see the movements I make between frames.
The normal speed clips are up on RUclips, this video is for referencing. They're called 'Green With Envy' and 'Shockwave Manipulation'. The other clip is in my third compilation.
Yep that's it.
About 6fps
As you see it, I moved it bit by bit while keeping it attached to the clayman in parts so it didn't fall off.
Nah but I want to get one, I hear it's a lot better for media related things like this.
Nah, it's just the clay by itself normally. Sometimes I hold onto the clay out of the scene. Everytime you see a blur in the picture it means the clay was falling down while I was taking the picture.
If I had to do it now, I’d do it in post using After Effects but for this it was mostly accidental - my old camera had to run at a lower shutter speed to let enough light in and the clay would droop if it was worked too much and got warm (plus thin parts couldn’t support the weight). As a result, the clay would move enough resulting in the blur you see!
Thanx 4 the slo mo, man. After I saw the first part of green with envy, I wanted to see how many moves you use per movement. I really like the fluent bal-snake morph movements!
how on earth do you get such good animation?!?!? I mean, I was all like "holy freakin crap when that fox came out of the little ball, and when that one ball started growing and shrinking!
is there a camera you think works well. because I have a camera but it's not able to connect to any onion skin program its not a tetherable camera.
you are such an awesome clay animator, could you please do some tutorials and ideas for animating and tips PLEASE? Like this comment so mamshmam sees!
im sure your gonna win with that ball in basket ball
DUDE! it dosnt matter what your animating you always impress me and inpire me to animate more :D well done dude!
WOWSERS!! That was AMAAAAAZING!! :)
Must have taken at least a good few hours for whoever made all this.
With such a creative art of brilliance like that, it wouldn't surprise me if this person was to say they worked on films like Wallace and Gromit and other such extremely clever animation films in t.v. and film.
That was AWSOME!! EXCELLEN!!
LOVE LOVE IT!! :-)
Ok if you need help, read this:
He doesn't actually get the things to float, he makes it so it is still holding on to very little of it untill it gets off screen so he can do what is called "cheat animation" by holding it out of the shot untill it fully gets out, so it is never really floating, unless he uses like fishing wire. Hope this helped =D
Panda, I have an answer to your question. Take a picture of a blank background, then take another of the same background with your clayman on an object to keep him in the air. Put them in photoshop, then erase the object holding your clayman, then there you have it!
holy shit how do you get it to move!!!
i dont get it
nah only joking; who is this guy mastermario, not your best, idiot
anywho nice vid, not sure if you read these anymore, you should do more slow motion but same frame rate as real motion, that would be cool, keep it up :D
@themixedarts do you know how many comments people have to reply to because people don't read the description? a ton. And this time you didn't waste his time but instead you are wasting mine. Next time, read the description before you ask a question.
hey mamshmam thank you for responding to my comments i never had such a big youtuber respond to my comments before
No worries! Wouldn't say I'm that big a RUclipsr haha. To answer one of your other questions, I use Dragonframe and that comes with an onion skinning feature.
the slow motion really helps to see the motion you used. your animation is terrific. I have never used clay, I have always used puppets with wire armatures and latex. You are a great inspiration to try clay though.
@mamshmam Thank you I've been looking into stop motion ever since i got my 3ds. Also my 3ds records stop motion at 10 fps is that good enough for a realistic stop motion? It looks a bit sketchy but not REALLY bad.
this is amazing i just am wondering how do u make the like figure do a back flip when its in mid air what do u atach it to i mean like do u put tape on it to hold it and take the pic or what plzz awrnswer back 5/5
@ BbQlizard it's plastercine . Hey i was wondering mamshmam if you ever watched Dragon Ball Z , GT , if so could you mock up some of the fight scenes that have ,because they are real bad as$ !
Dude thanks!! you inspired me to be a claymator, im trying to be like you but im just a 12 years kid, i know im gonna be better when i get more old i think but i must try when im a kid to have practice
You should make another Slow Mo References video for some of your new claymations! You've got so more advanced over the time, so people wanna learn how to be more like you! :)
dude i love your animations and i know that this takes loads of time...i just wish you'd make a fight scene. with both clay figures moving...idk look a really cool fight scene.
the first and last slo-mo videos remind me of the ka'kari from the night angel series, if you read them, anyways awesome, i;'ve gotta try this sometime!!, ok got the fan boy out of me -.-
0:53 zombies ftw!!!!
woah! 1000 likes! Cool! (don't worry, the few that disliked the video are just jealous) anyway, the slow motion references really helped me! :D thanks a lot Mamshmam
don't mind me, just watching this for nostalgic purposes
It explains a lot in your hard work.
when the fox went between the guys legs and behind him, i thought the fox would hit him like link does in the ocarina of time while facing ganon.
i have seen a few other clay vids and trust me i have seen alot crap clay vids with bad special effects and your number one in claY VIDS
Ужастно
I've seen both of those programs and none of this animation is off any of them, the animation stuff of them isn't even like this!
Very nice video! Love ur work and one day hope to do some claymation as well :p most likely no where as good as you though :]
1. right click on the video
2. see status for nerds
3. laugh
4. continue with your daily life
5. stop reading this comment
i think it would be really cool if u just made a lil series or a 10 min movie with some type of story with fighting
wow aweosme.
ive always wondered, how do u do the flying things, do u like stick something into the clay behind?
that was awesome, how long did it take you to make this? it takes me 4 hrs to make 10 seconds of film right now
You're right the video response ECUADOR RADIO STOP MOTION FIERCE this excellent animation also recommend them!
@themixedarts wires are attatched to the clay and edited out using photoshop or other picture editing programs.
that is truely amasing but your kinda bredin' the tv show "avatar the legend of aang"
its still funky though
Fantastic! Love the lighting and your attention to detail. What process are you using to achieve this effect?
can you make a vid on how to make clay people fly? Ive been searching for that anwser for qquite a while... :(
Mike1212345 he does do high fps but he slowed this down to show people how he does some of his things.
No the "We're sorry , this video is no longer available." sign popped up. NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
amazingg!! my favorite part is the beginning with like the alchemy and stuff!! that's amazinnnng!!!
amazing, this is really inlightening, thanks man, i think this will help a lot of animators out there
I made a song inspired by this video check it out its one of the video responses. Hope you enjoy.
dude how do you plan out all the liquid like movements when you're working frame by frame??!!??!!!
Every time I think you can't POSSIBLY get any better... you do it again. Awesome work. Keep it up.
video response ECUADOR RADIO STOP MOTION FIERCE very good animation is great I recommend them!
THAT IS AWESOME :)
i am starting claymation videos and i want to know what you use for your molding material
@themixedarts there is a video on how to do that. just search how to do flying stop motion
@HapplyFace You're wasting your own time by responding to me, it's your choice, not mine.
its REALLY hard to believe that this is clay coz it is just TOO DAMN SMOOTHE! i luv it! =D
Ummm.... elemental battlegrounds from Roblox?
Your flying tutorial link doesn't work, it just says access denied for me. Please reply
@HapplyFace Wasting his time? I didn't get a responce back, so how did I waste his time?
