Lemme breakdown how party nominations work in the U.S., for my learned British journalists. Citizens vote for delegates (usually in "open" primaries, but sometimes just to voters that identify or vote for a specific party), and the DELEGATES nominate the candidate they want for the national election in Nov....delegates are handpicked loyalists for their party, and if a candidate like Biden "releases" his delegates, and they agree on a candidate for nomination (Harris in this case), then...it's done! This crap about not honoring the will of 14M voters is just that, because voters are "voting" for delegates to represent their candidate, but the delegates can change who they vote for once the convention convenes and their candidate has directed them to...unless the convention is made "open" to allow delegates to hash out who their candidate should be.
Regardless, the GOP knows this (they use the same basic process), and they are just irritated because they are locked in with their candidate and aren't getting the opponent they oiled their entire propaganda machine to target against...but it's all perfectly legal, its all how party nominations work...conservatives will rail against it, file lawsuits, etc, but they are entirely without merit.

Oh, I am sure are right. There is a difference between something that is illegal and something that is scummy, undemocratic and simply appalling. But hey, it is by the 'rules', that is what matters, right?

    • @jamesgornall5731

It's not too dissimilar from THE UK except Party members exclusively are in charge of the selection of candidates, and different parties adhere to their own rules. Regardless, the shortlist of candidates' party members vote for have been thoroughly vetted and cleared by the party elite in advance. It's hardly different from China and other nations who close their candidate selection, leaving it to the party elite to sift through acceptable candidates.
Also, nod to 40k war, commissars dragging people into service off the street...there are some similarities there

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said at a meeting with top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi in Guangzhou that Kiev is preparing for talks with Russia, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning.
"Ukraine is willing to engage in dialogue and talks with Russia and is making preparations for that," Mao said at a briefing, citing Kuleba.
According to the Ukrainian foreign minister, "talks need to be rational, substantive and aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace."
Kuleba stated that Ukraine highly appreciated China’s active and meaningful role in facilitating peace and maintaining international order. Kiev highly values Beijing’s opinion and has studied the initiative of China and Brazil aimed at finding a political solution to the conflict, the top Ukrainian diplomat pointed out. He noted that "China is a great country," and added that Ukraine and China were important economic and strategic trade partners.
Ukraine’s TSN TV channel, in turn, reported that Kuleba and Wang had discussed ways to peacefully settle the conflict; however, the Ukrainian foreign minister has not yet commented on the outcome of the discussion. "The meeting lasted longer than expected and we did not have time to talk to Kuleba. He is scheduled to hold another series of meetings, and not only in Guangzhou," the TV channel’s reporter accompanying the Ukrainian delegation said on air.
According to the journalist, the meeting lasted over three hours. "Apart from bilateral relations, the parties also discussed the peace plan. The Chinese Foreign ministry reiterated that China called for an early ceasefire and a political solution," she pointed out, citing sources in the Ukrainian delegation.
Kuleba is on a visit to China on July 23-26 at Wang’s invitation.

Beijing is ready to boost imports of food from Ukraine, according to China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi speaking with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Kuleba at a meeting in Guangzhou, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning told a briefing.
"China will continue expanding food imports from Ukraine and jointly supporting the reliability of supply chains and international food security," Wang Yi said.
China has been Ukraine’s major trade partner and major purchaser of its agriculture products in recent years, the minister noted. "In the first half of this year bilateral trade demonstrated strong growth, space and potential for cooperation," he said and urged to expand practical cooperation between the two countries in various areas.
Kuleba is visiting the People’s Republic of China at Wang Yi’s invitation on July 23-26.

The change on the battlefield, and for the civil society to boot, reminds me of WW I. There the world saw the introduction of the aeroplane and the tank or more generally the motorized armoured vehicle. It presented a different way to mobilze heavy guns and also troops. I like to compare that to drones: delivering explosives in a more complex way. Namely by using human or one day artificial pilots. During the war it was still in its infancy to see an enormous development afterwards culminating to a certain standard in WW II. So the doctrin had to include those new means.
In the civil sector I see the more encompassing influence more happening in WW II. With the bombing of large swaths of industrial civilian aereas. Just like cyber warfare will impact everyday life even very remote from the actual contact zone. Russia repeats the US/Britsh doctrin of destroying infrastructure to impact civilian life with the goal of physical and psychological impact. But Cyber War will affect our society as a whole in a case of war because everybody relies on the same infrastructure no matter where he is situated in the country. The affected areas a larger than the local gris that supplies electricity. And which can be isolated to a degree.

A modern Western Army should focus on dispersed networked forces with cost effective weapons for a long war. Rifles should be designed for effective engagement out to 750m or more, using a caliber well suited for that such as 6.5 Grendel. Light weight 60mm mortars should be provided to each company to extend engagement out to 3000m or more with low cost indirect fire. They should also have drone specialists in each company with observation, logistics, and anti vehicle types available. Armored vehicles with short range air defenses should be plentiful. Electronic warfare systems of various types should be widely available. Sensor networks and communication networks should be well integrated with information flowing instantly to those who need it. All vehicles should have at least a minimal level of armor protection because there is no feasible separation between front line and rear support when drones can penetrate deep and have almost full visibility of all movements. Thermal insulating camouflage should be used for all vehicles and dismounted infantry. A blanket such as SAAB Barracuda for vehicles. A thermal cloak for infantry to wear over body armor while keeping easy access to gear in pouches. Entrenching tools, canteens, and knives for everyone to dig in frequently for cover and concealment.

The next major war will be drones vs drones, not people vs people. Nations with the best software and sensors and most efficient and rapid manufacturing technology will win. The USA has the best software. Sensors are split between the USA, Japan, and China. The Chinese have the rapid manufacturing technology. Battery tech to power drones, and their manufacturing will be key, and China is on top there, too.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is holding a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Kuleba in Guangzhou, Xinhua reported.
China’s authorities will continue to assist in the peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Tuesday.
"China will continue to stand on the side of peace and dialogue and support the international community in building up more consensus and jointly looking for viable ways to achieve a political settlement of the crisis," she said at a news briefing, replying to a question by TASS. The diplomat specified that China has always supported "an early ceasefire." According to her, a political settlement is "in the interest of all parties."
The Ukrainian foreign minister will be in China until July 26. His goal is to discuss bilateral cooperation and the issues of settling the Ukrainian conflict. In February 2023, Beijing presented its 12-point peace plan for Ukraine, which involves ceasing combat and resuming peace talks.
