Thank you SCI Foundation and Alaska for working this project. It just thrills me to see bison being reintroduced to American landscapes. I hope they thrive. They are wonderful animals and part of our American heritage that we nearly lost forever.
American hunters do much of the hands on, get down and dirty, environmental work. Much respect. Quality Deer Management Association has a journal "Whitetail Journal" with great environmental projects and research. Whatever improves the environment for deer improves it for all parts of the ecology ... just as the bison do. Loved the flower covered head blinds!
I was one of them, i thought they weren't.. now they need to bring Musk oxen as well to complete the picture.. they brought some of them to Russia when some scientist discovered they were also part of the ecosystem
If their numbers are finally high enough the bison will open up the forests by themselves and won't need to rely on preopened habitat any longer. Wild grazers are so important to maintain open areas for native meadows and the associated insects, birds etc.
Under half a million Bison/buffalo left in N.America which sounds like many, but in 1700 there were 40 million and the 1600's closer to 50 million. In 1920 they were almost gone.

@@kristinebailey6554it’s very relevant because people like that exist in the real world and stop projects like these. People are literally against the condor reintroduction program. Just think about that for a minute, a nearly extinct vulture that solely eats dead animals (clean up crew) and is no danger to humans, they’re against it and tried bringing the project down. I can’t fathom this line of thinking and they need to be properly educated.
Great question! Yes, the collars get tighter as the bison grows. However, our researchers make sure to capture them and re-adjust the collar as needed. This is true for every study that involves collaring wildlife. Thank you for your support and please feel free to visit our blog First For Wildlife on Wordpress!
Was Bison Historically/Native to that place or places like it? I hope their isn't a concern about the land being to soft for the Bison weight. I like the idea of having places for Bison, but I just hope they are put in the Right places.
Please let us know who killed this wonderful animals reason for wipe out of natural habitat? Sorry If i am wrong. My boss always said THE SHOW MUST GO ON & I don't understand who stop the show ? Please comments ?
Brian Fairey Yes. SCI Foundation assisted in bringing the bison to Alaska from Alberta. We helped by feeding them while in captivity, expanding and outfitting the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, and finally transporting them by truck to the release site! Absolutely not! Unless a species is highly endangered or nearing extinction, protecting them from predation is extremely counter-productive. Wolves, grizzles, and other large-mammal predators will help cull the herd of older, weaker, and sickly animals. This is vital to the overall health of the herd. Conservators recognize and respect that thriving ecosystems naturally go through cycles where predator and prey experience population growth. The growth of one serves as a healthy counterpoint to the growth of the other. The right goal is balance.

People who do this type of work are extremely important and extremely underappreciated.

It's amazing how not many people realize that bison are native to Alaska

How on earth could six people not like this. Insane
I find it insane that people even look at the negatives. They are irrelevant.

Finallyspme good news. A smart fat sighted project. Many thanks.
How are the bison handling wolves and bears? Formidable predators.
this video is one of my lists
I think a musk ok reintroduction would recreate traditional AK ecology
Awesome!
Great that they can be a part of nature again and also in natures circle with apex predators.
Brilliant
Thx. Great
Fantastic to watch, but will them collars get tight has the bison grow?dont want them choking after all they have been through

Now all we gotta do is reintroduce the true wild horse in Alaska and camels
How many of them are there
any new births
So, you're saying that since there are miles of untouched grasses, that the Bison are underpopulated relative to the regions ability to carry?
Sinse México, congratulations.

Redundant, thanks.
What happened to the bison? Were they all shot?
Awesome
What kind of predators do they face in that area?
Wolves.
What's the difference between Wood Bison and what I understand to be American Bison?
i guess the wood bison likes to live around woods and nibble on trees ore often?
What about their genetic biodiversity?
