When the Russian VDV was issued, it came with a short length of wire . Used to suspend the canteen over a heat source and melt ice in the canteen or purify water. Thanks for your excellent video John and all the best.
After I watched your video on the Russian VDV, I got one off ebay. I paid about 50 bucks, it's easily my favorite mess kit, perfect for 1 person and don't take up any extra space or weight in a ruck, just cant be beat! As always I enjoyed your video!
I don't comment enough on John Sherwood's videos. I have been a subscriber for some time now and would just like to say just how much I appreciate his videos. First, I've referenced many of them in order to make an educated purchase of something I was interested in. However, these videos are so enjoyable, that I often find myself re-watching many of the videos because of how relaxing they are and yet, reinforcing my understanding from his demonstrations and instructions. Therapy! Thank you John! Your Channel is much appreciated!!!
If some enterprising business were to make a copy of the Russian set in stainless steel, maybe make the canteen plastic to cut down weight I`d buy one in a heartbeat.I think its a clever design but as you mentioned in the vid the fact that its aluminium makes it a no go for me.
I have a SVD set. I like it. But, it is heavy and is not for light camping. I also have a Chinese PLA kit and it is lighter. Plus the Chinese kit has a shoulder strap.
Fantastic my man I really appreciate the little wire trick that goes over the original GI stove for the canteen set.. that little wire trick saved me a ton of time... I don't have to lift the stove off of the fire with my cup and it dropping in my lap or whatever but that little wire trick does the job thank you very much for the info
J Boone Thanks. But I can’t take credit for the idea. I saw it on another RUclips video a few years ago. Can’t remember where though. Thanks for watching!
Hey John! I found your channel a week or so ago and have been catching up ever since. Love your laid back style and your informative videos! And being from Pennsylvania, I also love seeing the "woods" you get to run around in as well! Certainly different than up here in PA! Thank you for your videos! Subbed and am very much enjoying your content! Keep it up brother! God bless!
I think so too. Well thought out. If it was made out of stainless steel then it would be the ultimate in my opinion. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
The Old One very true. Rust will happen eventually. But stainless is a little more rugged in my opinion. Aluminum will eventually deteriorate too. Thanks for watching my video and for commenting!
gijr2003 it’s a very good kit. Do you like the plastic canteen on your kit? I heard some people complain that they had a odor to them. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
yes sir, it looks mighty good! don't know who wouldn't like those pots from the russian VDV, but i do wish it were SS instead of aluminum. i want the stuff to last to hand down to grandchildren. pin holes in aluminum in the past. that VDV set is very nice though i agree! all of that fancy stuff like pathfinder is thin walled and expensive. not the kind of quality i want. somebody gave me a plastic usgi canteen over 30 years ago and i had a wrinkled-up face at it thinking it wouldn't last, but it has lasted and they're inexpensive, too. it's been in my truck 30 years and used hundreds of times and it doesn't leak. i don't go anywhere without that usgi canteen cook set. nice cook-out! enjoyed time with you my friend - hit liked and thank you!
i have been tempted more than once looking at them Russian VDV sets...but then i get tempted a lot...which i don't believe to be a sin in and of itself...so far at least, iv'e held off that temptation...but now John you sure make it hard on a feller! lol Looked like a mighty tempting meal as well!!!...atb...woods
I’ve had that Russian kit for about a year now. I think it is an awesome design. As far as I know, it’s the only kit with a flask, cup/lid and a pot. Would be great to see a modern incarnation of the Russian kit.
I agree! Especially in stainless steel. The canteen could be plastic and I don't think it would diminish the effectiveness for me at all. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Sheriff Of Nottingham Thanks! It’s a bit heavy for those distance backpackers that count ounces but for me it works great and it has never leaked in my pack to this day. Thanks for watching and for commenting!
Enjoyed it as usual. I bet there are Russian veterans watching laughing their asses off at the 'VDV' tag on an item of kit every soldier gets issued; not just the paratroopers. Of course if they call it the VDV mess kit the easily impressed think it had to be better than the ordinary issue item. Loved the remark at the end about having to use every item just because its there. So true.
WOW! Thanks, John! I was looking to see them side-by-side, but you really did a bang-up job. To answer your question, I am a male of the species. What species that is, well, you will have to ask my wife. It varies...
Lol! Well that's good to know. When I shot the video I said "he" and then I immediately thought to myself I should cover my bases. I think sometimes I'm a baboon in my wife's mind. I'm glad you liked the video. When you asked your question I realized just how long it had been since I used that kit. It turned out ok and it was fun. Thanks for the idea.
John thank you for great vid I enjoy all your reviews. By the way you can fit the U.S. plastic canteen in the Soviet pot and still slide the U.S. issue canteen stove on top. The Russian kit is a great set for day trips on a canoe, or day hikes. I used it on the trail to make hot tea with the German Esbit and U.S. Heat tabs. I agree with many of the other posters. The Russian kit should be copied and made in Stainless. It is a very good design
Robert Crosen Thanks for the tip. I never thought to try that. If someone remade that kit I’m stainless for a good price, I would definitely own one. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Gifted a USGI canteen kit , use almost daily, portion of food enough to satisfy on the move, or a way to make a hearty cuppa Joe. The Soviet kit reminds me of a Faberge nesting nik- nak & or an adaptation to German mess kit with a Soviet Union Identity in culture.
I prefer french water mess kit : It contain 1.3L of water ( more realistic for one day consumption than the 0.75l russian) , is available in polyethylene OR aluminium , and the bowl in stainless steel OR aluminium, and use a solid fuel tablet stove alu fitted in the strong bag. Was used between 1952 and late 2010' and is cheap on ebay .
Russian canteen (bottle) becomes noisy when not full of water. The water splashes and makes a sound, which is not good in wartime. Plastic bottles were also produced, but they smelled and, if possible, the soldiers switched to aluminum ones. Thanks for video.
all lives matter I bought that at a pre-1840 American re-enactment festival. It has a hook on one side and a fork on the other. It works very well. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
I wonder if you drill small holes in the lid cup and if you could make a lid for the lid cup it would make a good way to steam your vegetables as you boil your water
Anybody care to share tips on how to clean that nasty oil (preservative?)/rubber smell from these canteens ? I just received my kit and in the process of giving it a through cleaning I'm still noticing an interesting smell coming from the inside of the canteen. It is definitely new old stock/unused, so I assume the smell is mostly the rubber cap thingy + long term storage smell. There was a light sheen of some kind of oil on the canteen exterior too. Can't wait to test it during combat operations (Chasing deer next deer season in Pennsylvania). Heheheheheheh.
Great video. I was wondering if you can help, i have a question for you. I have the VDV set but no cover. Would the other canteen cover fit? Thank you for your time.
Yes you can. My plastic USGI canteen fits inside the VDV pot. The only thing is the cup handle that normally locks onto the Russian canteen can't lock onto the US canteen and it protrudes out a little bit and the Russian cover will not fit with the US canteen installed. I hope this helps! Thanks for your question!
Lol! Whichever its supposed to be. I really don't know. But that's how it went down in my backyard that day! I think either would work depending on a man's mood. Thanks for watching my video and for your comments!
It eould depend on the cooktime of the veggies, if they are fast to cook like mushrooms, no they should go in last if they are long to cook, you can put them earlier.
John Sherwood i was hoping it would fit was gonna buy one. Wanted a bigger cup than the one that comes with the french canteen. Oh well it was a thought. Thanks
Hey John good video, will the VDV set fit in the USGI molle pouch?? If it does that’s a plus, I know the german mess kit fits in the 2 liter USGI canteen cover
That's a great question! I wish I would have thought of it for the video. The answer is yes but its tight. I didn't know the German kit fit the two liter bag. That's cool!
I carried my East German mess kit it one for awhile, I’m glad to hear that the VDV kit fits, I went checking for a VDV set and dang, they got very hard to find guess I’m gonna have to go direct to russia for the kit
John:The German (BW) kit will fit in a 200rd MOLLE pouch quite nicely. Swedish kit, too. British and French kits will fit in a MOLLE canteen / utility pouch.

I don't think using the plastic G.I. canteen makes it a fair comparison. The metal canteen is actually made to be used on the canteen stove, right along with the cup. You also have to include the canteen cup lid, and the real canteen stove. When you do this, there's no comparison. The G.I. set wins going away. Realloy, why use the plastic canteen at all. It's a +latecomer, and not part of the original set. And for full honesty, you have to include the G.I. mess kit which is intended to be part of the canteen cook set. They are not separate units, but are one, single cook set. Something many don't realize is that most military kits are made according to the diet that soldier is used to eating in his home country. In Russia, and bordering countries that were part of the Soviet Union, the diet was soups, stews, and boiled vegetabvles, usually root vegetables. Because of this, they need to boil all sorts of things. In the U.S., we fry a lot of food, so the mess kit includes a skillet, which is something Northern European soldiers were not used to doing. I agree. They are both in two totally different classifications. But I mainly did this video as a response to a viewer's question. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
I always tell everybody I know that does camping or hiking to carry at least one metal water container in case you need to boil water, preferably stainless steel but aluminum will work just as good, just won't be as durable as SS.
When the Russian VDV was issued, it came with a short length of wire . Used to suspend the canteen over a heat source and melt ice in the canteen or purify water.
Thanks for your excellent video John and all the best.
An awesome showcase of my favorite bush cooking kit. Ive been using the VDV kit for a few years now and heartily endorse it!
TurtleWolf Pack Thanks very much for your positive feedback! I had not had this kit out in a while and it was fun to give it some action.
John Sherwood I know the Chinese make a similar set but I cant recall the name, it is usually cheaper and more available than the VDV.
After I watched your video on the Russian VDV, I got one off ebay. I paid about 50 bucks, it's easily my favorite mess kit, perfect for 1 person and don't take up any extra space or weight in a ruck, just cant be beat! As always I enjoyed your video!

really enjoyed that. I was about to order one of this and was curious how it worked. You explained it perfectly - thanks John
skatonio I’m glad my video helping. Thanks for watching!

i love how this channel has everything im looking for
Thanks for sharing your review. That’s canteen cup Tuesday done in style.
Thank you very much!

That looks like a delish & simple hike/camp recipe. I will try that soon. Thanks for all of the videos you share with us.
Thank you! I hope the recipe turns out great for you. Thanks for watching and for commenting!
I think the VDV kit is the best design of all the military kits I've seen.
I think so too. Well thought out. If it was made out of stainless steel then it would be the ultimate in my opinion. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

you have great vids on different cook and canteen sets its awesome...….. like lars would say lol thanks
real metis Lol! Thanks for watching.
I got a VDV set off ebay years ago. Called a Soviet paratrooper mess kit. It came with a plastic canteen.
gijr2003 it’s a very good kit. Do you like the plastic canteen on your kit? I heard some people complain that they had a odor to them. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Thanks for the demonstration. I like the Russian kit. Your lunch looked really good too.
Thanks for watching another one. You have been putting out some nice ones too. Keep them coming!
Just got my vde set, covered in cosmolin as per warning. Looking forward to use this.
Derek Todd congratulations! It’s a great set after it’s all cleaned.

Nice cook out John, and a good comparison, thanks !
Thanks for watching another one!

Thanks for watching Woods! I don't mean to be a stumbling block to a brother! Lol. I hope you and your family are doing well. Thanks for your comment.
MTwoodsrunner give in. Seriously, over the past few years this is my favorite go to kit!
These videos are awesome 👏 thanks for sharing John
Thanks very much for watching!

Who made your pot hanging rod?
love cute cook set😍😍😍♥️♥️
Wow cool.
Keep in mind, the US kit was developed in 1910. Way before paratroopers. In 1910 we were already ahead of everyone.
Does the usgi stove and the case fit the vdv canteen?
Russian canteen (bottle) becomes noisy when not full of water. The water splashes and makes a sound, which is not good in wartime. Plastic bottles were also produced, but they smelled and, if possible, the soldiers switched to aluminum ones. Thanks for video.
I like your fire place poker how did u rig that up ?
all lives matter I bought that at a pre-1840 American re-enactment festival. It has a hook on one side and a fork on the other. It works very well. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
I wonder if you drill small holes in the lid cup and if you could make a lid for the lid cup it would make a good way to steam your vegetables as you boil your water
I guess it would be possible.
What is the brand name of the "everglade seasoning" you were using, I 'd like to get some.
Everglades Seasoning is the brand name. You can find it on Amazon or Florida grocery stores.
Where did you get the kids? I noticed that they're different.
One looks thicker than the other.
Hi, does that pathfinder canteen cup lid fir the usgi butterfly handle canteen?
Yes it does as long as it’s a genuine US butterfly cup. It will not fit the Chinese Rothco re-make cup.
What part of Florida are you in. I'm in Putnam County Florida
I’m in Polk County
which canteen actually holds more water?
Gdude2k Well, the Russian one does. But not by much.
Anybody care to share tips on how to clean that nasty oil (preservative?)/rubber smell from these canteens ? Great video. I was wondering if you can help, i have a question for you. I have the VDV set but no cover. Would the other canteen cover fit?
Thank you for your time.
Steve Cranna Yes. The US molle pouch that I have fits but it is a little tight around the sides. Thanks for watching and for your question!
John Sherwood Thank you for helping. The VDV set is an excellent piece of kit. Just got mine in the week. Can't wait to use it.
hi John, can you put usgi canteen inside vdv pot? i really want to know how does it fit.
Nice vid John, as usual. But, shouldn't you saute' the veggies first, then add the meat?
Nevermind. Had it bass-ackwards. Meat first, then veggies. Veggies stop the meat from cooking further.
Hey john i was wondering if a aluminum french canteen i think its like 42 or 48 oz. will fit in that russian canteen cup.? That would make a great kit
I got my two kits out and tried them. The aluminum French canteen will fit into the small Russian cup but not into the pot. The canteen is too fat.
That's where I purchased mine. Takes almost a month to get it.
Nice to know. Thanks for posting that!
The VDV canteen is the perfect thing to drink Skooma out of
Hello Mr. John 🙂
I wanna Ask you about Hungarian WW2 Canteen Olive green colour and about Swedish Mess Kit where can I order them online ?
Please tell me or give me a link to buy them both together or each one alone
I have been looking at all of my online sources and I was only able to find one dealer that still has post WW2 Hungarian mess kits: www.varusteleka.com/en/group/eating/924 I was also able to find several Hungarian kits and a couple of genuine Swedish kits on eBay for sale.
Hi there how much do those mess kits cost on ebay
louis burlingham I just looked and they range between $25-$40 plus shipping.
Thanks for your videos. You need to add the British/NATO BCB canteen cup cooker with the Osprey water bottle and plastic mug to your collection.
I would love to have one. I will get one soon I hope. Its a great system. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Caffiend I have the Crusader set with cooker, with steel lid (USGI type, flattened to fit) with a small vaseline tin + glassfibre wick as the stove. Meths in small shampoo bottles (the free ones from hotel rooms.) Compact, efficient and sturdy.
I've had the Russian set in my cart for a while, just thinking it over. And its still in my cart now. Im just thinking it over. If it was just a bit cheaper...
I guess thats with all the Russian gear. It seems to be well worth it if shipping wasn't making the price almost double. Sigh...
Yeah. I know about that shipping. Also, it takes nearly a month to get here too. I hope you find one that's in a more reasonable range. Thanks for watching another video!
I have both. US kit by far better. More compact. Canteen easier to access. Has a stove.
John:My VDV kit arrived today. OK, how do you get rid of that layer of grease that is on, well, everything? Denatured alcohol or mineral spirits? Also, what is a good substitute for the moldy rubber seal in the canteen cap? Cork? Silicone?Thanks,-RSR
If you go by what you get AS ISSUED , the Soviet wins , hands down . Like showing a pimped out car, with all the 3rd party cheese on it , and NOT as it rolled off the assymbly line .
One other thing that escapes the attention on many is a cover for the G.I. Mess Kit. The cover for the two quart G.I. canteen is also a cover for the G.I. mess kit. Anyway, when you compare apples to apples, the G.I. kit wins in every category except how much water you can boil, and it comes close there, especially when you add a second cup and lid, which many canteen covers would actually hold.
Раша никогда не думала про своих солдат. Осторожно с их металлом, там могут быть вредные примеси
😍👍🇵🇭☑️
well thats not a fair comparsion the us is a canteen the soviet is rather a mess kit built around the awesome m1910 design adding a pot
