  • How to Prepare for Prison | Prison Documentary
Behind Bars - Philippines - CIW: Locked Up Ladies: • Behind Bars: Philippin...
‘How to Prepare for Prison’ focuses on the lives of three very different people who are steeling themselves against the daunting prospect of serving prison sentences for the first time.
Shot over three years, the film captures their growing psychological trauma as their children and families face poverty and social shame, and the individuals charged face their fears about violence in prison and whether or not they can survive the loss of freedom. All three experience protracted waits for their trials and, whether they’ve really done the crime or not, feel the enormous power of the law. The film goes beyond the notion of guilt or innocence. Offering an intimate look at the lives and states of mind of those awaiting judgment-filled with regret, defiance and stark fear-deepens our understanding of the legal system and cultural ideas about crime and punishment. The stakes are high. Lives are changed forever.

The "violent" criminals, there was only one actually violent, one semi-violent & the others were non-violent. But steal almost a million dollars, and that's not violent, so it must be ok, too? I'd rather be around an honest murderer than a lying, manipulative thief, and that's coming from a CCO at an all men's, all security levels State Correctional facility. There's a lot of wasted life & wasted money on locking people up for extended periods of time, like the guy who was paralyzed after purse snatching. It's bad, yes. But permanent paralysis & a 40 yr prison bid? That's ridiculous! *Chomos* get less time for keeping the *kiddie ph0rn rings* (human trafficking) going & for ruining children's lives by *graping* & *m0lestin'* kids. Ok. Makes perfect sense.🙄

She stole a million dollars, and acting like she's surprised she is going to prison. She committed a crime. She's a thief, and sitting there giving a sobbed story about how she lost everything. Her home, her career that she worked hard for. Seems to me like you worked even harder to steal that money. Because that's a lot of money to embezzle. Did she really think she was going to sail off into the sunset? The nerve, I mean you got away with getting a little money. Then got greedy and wanted it all, and didn't care about the consequences until you were caught. So please save the sob story, about what you've been through or have lost.

The fact that 8 months was even a discussion is amazing. She has zero remorse, or guilt for putting her father through this. She will do something far worse, after the slap on the wrist she got. She wanted everyone to pity her when she had to give up the dog. I felt bad for the dog. Other women have to give up their children, who are screaming, crying, and begging for their mothers. Those mothers will have to explain their actions to those kids one day. The dog can't hold her accountable, that's why people like her always have animals.

I know he committed a crime, a fairly minor one at that, then shot in the back by a police officer, rendering him paralysed. It brought me to tears to see his distress! 40 years for stealing a purse, yet the woman who stole from her employer, a huge sum of money is not going to face anywhere near that! Better to just be yourself and hold your head high. Other prisoners will know straight away if you are trying to be something you're not. It's the way you carry yourself, even the way you walk. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Don't get involved in anyone's business and don't accept gifts from other prisoners thinking they are being nice to you, because you then owe them something, and don't have any debts to other prisoners from drugs they have supplied to you.

That officers statement about investing money in the “front end” to circumvent the need for more prisons is spot on. Also privatized prisons that want harsher sentencing for profit are another issue that definitely puts more money into confinement than programs to mitigate the causes for the eventual confinement. There should absolutely be prisons because some people deserve to be there and should never leave them, but there needs to be a reexamination of the justice system.

It's the element of the unknown that makes facing prison so traumatic. You just don't know if you're going to be dealing with corrupt guards, extortion, violence, sexual assault, gangs, riots or even situations that could lead to an extension of your sentence! It adds an element of psychological and emotional Torture which isn't factored into the calculation of a person's punishment. Loss of freedom and separation from family and loved ones for a given period of time is more than adequate for a person convicted of a serious crime. They shouldn't have to run the risk of additional suffering caused by unforseen aspects of the prison experience. That's not Justice in the truest sense.
