  • Hello everyone,
    Time for another update on the Hymek, D7076.
    The BHG team have been working hard to get the engine ready for lifting. Before Christmas 2022 the engine was lifted back into the locomotive and work is underway to reconnect the engine. Work is progressing nicely with getting the engine ready to lift back into the loco.
    It is hoped to have the loco back in traffic soon but as with all railway items, money is always a battle so please help where you can. With a large bill to pay for a complete set of batteries required every penny will count!
    Check out our Facebook page for further updates.

    What a great project! Four charge coolers up top? Who’s manufactured that engine? I’m just getting into locos in my old age haha. Love the huge Diesel engines

    • @J0nnyGT
      @J0nnyGT  Год назад +2

      Thanks Peter,
      Well spotted, those are four charge coolers with two huge turbos. The engine is a Machbach MD870 and was manufactured in the UK under licence by Bristol-Siddeley.
      The engine produces 1,700 HP however this is massively derated due to BRs requirement for a ‘Type 3’ loco. The engine was more than capable of 3,300 HP and sorry to say was years ahead of anything English Electric manufactured at the time.

      @@J0nnyGT thanks for that mate. Well I suppose the engines will last a little longer under less boost if that’s how they de tuned them.

    Looking Forward to seeing it in action again, i would still love to do a driver experience on it as i had one booked years ago but the ELR cancelled it -twice!

      @J0nnyGT  Год назад +1

      Fingers crossed we can get it back into service soon. As mentioned in the video funds keeping these locos going is extremely expensive especially when we need to buy a set Alf new batteries for it. Please consider helping us out where you can and you never know 7076 might be able to do a driver experience for you.

      @@J0nnyGT Thanks for replying and believe me i can fully understand a 60 year old Diesel Hydraulic is going to be a money pit and if i had money spare after spending it on my fleet of 16 Vintage lorries which are also around the same age -i would be contributing !! -but yes im 100% for the driver experience if they run the courses again. Please take a look at my old lorries on my site.

      Well 2023 might be the year for you. As we are only a small band of volunteers it does take time (and a load of money!!!) to get these complex beasts running again especially since we have 4 hydraulic locos in our fleet.
      If everything goes to plan D7076 should run at the July Summer Diesel gala at the East Lancashire Railway.

    well done, how many gallons of oil in the sump ?

    • @J0nnyGT
      @J0nnyGT  Год назад +1

      Hi Peter,
      Off the top of my head the engine takes around 90 gallons of oil which is two oil drums. The engine and transmission uses good quality ‘straight 40s’ oil however the final drive uses ‘straight 80s’
      As you can imagine with the world today this is very expensive stuff and we need every bit of help to get D7076 ‘Hymek’ going again.
