I've made 2 ragtime quilts, a lap and a twin size. My boyfriend adopted the first one, and then requested the larger one. You inspired me to join your rag quilt-a-thon. I had very little flannel, but for 2 yards of a 108. So I went out and bought several 1/2 yards of coordinating flannels. This one is for me!
I’ve made a few of them. Lap size and a little larger. The recipients loved them. My wrists did not from all the clipping🤗 our adult son’s got lost for a while. He told me after he found it. His wife started laughing and said that he left out the part where he cried about losing it. That just melted my heart🥰.
Oh my gosh!! What a great story!!! That would melt my heart too! My son has two and he loves both of his!!! The first one I am sure is just a rag now!!! I repaired it once after he took it to college. That was years ago!!! Ragtime quilts are his favorite!!!
I taught my brother how to make them and he loved it and decided to do his own take on it. He lived in PA and I live in Maine. When I visited him, he told me that it just wasn't working and wanted to know what was wrong. (He had been having mini strokes unbeknown to all of us and was having cognitive issues). He made the seams 1/8", thinking it would save fabric. I explained that he needed to make the seams 1" and we could either rip them apart and re-do them or start over. Well, his health declined rapidly and I promised him that I would finish his quilts that he was trying to make if he passed before he could do them and give them to his children (3 of them). Well, he passed and I spent the next year ripping and redoing what he started. Found some other projects that I had started him on and finished them up too. So, that was three right there. I usually make this rag quilts as throw size because they are heavy and people seem to want them as that size.
So sorry to her about your brother passing.Glad you got the time to see him before. I can feel in my heart that you had the time and love for him to finish his projects for him.❤❤❤❤
One of my very first quilts was a rag quilt some ten years ago. It was made with “homespun” type fabrics and batting in a throw size. I also made one with denim and red gingham. And I made some placemats. Hubby gave me some heavy duty snips to help with the snipping.
Ok, I've heard of these before, but your explanation is great. The tip on seaming 3/4 inches, is appreciated. Now I know what I can do with some flannel I have. I used a good portion of flannel (I over bought for backing of a previous quilt) as batting in a quilt I'm working on now. It worked out great.
I've made about half a dozen rag quilts and I love making them. I use flannel rather than batting in the middle. I would love to participate in the quilt-a-thon and even though I'm inside an air-conditioned house, it's going to be between 113-118 or even hotter in the next few weeks. The last thing I want to do is have a heavy, thick FLANNEL quilt on my lap as I snip the edges. Good luck with your project.
I have made several ragtime quilts. All sizes, all fabrics. My most involved one was a red, white and black flannel that was actually chenille also. So I had a lot of layers so I could add the chenille technique across the entire block. I rotated the red, white and black so the chenille all had a different shade to it. I know this doesn’t even make sense but it was my heaviest most involved rag quilt. I don’t ever use batting, because I like to add an extra layer of flannel to give it more of a fluffy seams on top. I also do not need to use the X, since the only reason for that X is to keep the batting in place.
Accuquilt makes 2 rag dies. For the handcrank miniGo and the Go, 5 1/4" and for the GoBig the elecric one, 8 1/2 " die. You cannot use the bigger die in the hand crank cutters, but you can use the smaller die in the electric cutter. This will save you hours of snipping and save your hands, especially if you have mobility issues.
I love that Milo doesn't get left out! I have made many rag quilts over the years. About 10 years ago I made a chenille quilt(a kind of rag quilt) for my daughter's sister-in-law's new baby. Now, I see on Facebook that the quilt has been relegated to her dog's bed. LOL!! At least it is still being used, and not sitting in a closet.
Oh my...I would be upset if one of my quilts ended up as a dog bed unless that is what I made it for specifically. It is possible, I have heard other quilters tell similar stories. You know....we have the fun making them and giving them so we had our fun. I guess we shouldn't worry so much about what will happen to them....lol but we do!!
I sew an extra piece of matching folded flannel (wide enough to be caught inside the stay-stitching) to all outer edges before I sew the X’s or other quilting line(s). That way the outer edges will have four layers of fabric just like the seam lines do. It takes planning and extra time, but I like the results. You and your sister are taking on a big project, but I’m sure the quilts’ recipients will be very appreciative.

I prefer the brick road design so I don't have to match seams. The ones for Project Linus are with flannel, but ones for Hospice I use denim and plaid fabric as they work for men or women. If you ever decide to make a quilt, start with a ragtime quilt!!!! You don't have to pay to have it quilted!!!! People love them also and they are the easiest quilts I have ever made!!!
I made one rag quilt along with the ladies in the guild that I belonged to. As I remember, itwas more baby/toddler size. All were donated to a charity.
My favorite as then I get to finish the quilt myself. My first was queen in pinks. Rectangle with batting. She used as bed cover. Numerous baby crib size also with batting. 2 gray and black queen. Warm and natural batting with flannel backing. Then several that were made from my husbands work jeans(farmer) for great grandsons. Even did an applique heart on vintage 5” squares baby size. I have even done the rag that Darlene Michaud did just folding full yardage. We lived on a farm and my wash water dumped into a tub sink so I was able to put a filter in the drain to catch all the lint and strings that came out in handfuls. Now that we are living in town I am not sure what I will do as the water drains into a wall drain. I have heard of people taking to laundry mat to wash. Spring loaded scissors are a must.
@@thesimplequilter7499 for sure. I removed litterly hand fulls with each quilt made then into dryer and I checked after first 5-10-15 minutes to remove the additional but love them
I once made small quilts for my son’s cat and dog. One was a whole cloth quilt made from flannel. The other was made from squares of corduroy left over from garment making. When the quilts taken were home to the pets, it turned out that the dog loved the one I had intended for the cat, and the cat loved the one I thought I was making for the dog. At least they both didn’t want the same quilt.
Would homespun fabrics work instead of flannel? I have some homespun fabrics that I would like to use up and get rid of. They are “years” old. Probably from the 1990s.
My first rag quilt was homespun. Years ago (the 1990s), that was the recommended fabric. When I washed the quilt after it was clipped, the red color from one fabric bled into the other fabrics. I washed the quilt with Synthrapol, and the red fabric lost so much color that it changed to mauve, and the beige fabric stayed pinkish. So I would recommend testing each homespun for bleeding before you make a quilt from them. My flannel rag quilts have been more successful.

I have a question, please. The back of a quilt has a big piece of fabric. I have seen people put a few smaller pieces for the backing. My question is: Why have I never seen a quilt top for the front and back? Basically, a reversible quilt with two different tops. Thank you.
When I was in Paducah, one of the quilt exhibits was one featuring quilts with amazing fronts and amazing backs! They do exist! I sometimes use up left over fabric for the back but I have never made two quilts top and sewed them together.
I think it would be very difficult to get the quilts lined up perfectly so that the quilting would look good on both sides. That’s one reason that when the back of a quilt has a variety of fabrics, they tend to be larger pieces, and the outside edges can be trimmed away without losing any intricate patchwork. Also, if many seam allowances were layered, a machine needle could break, and the quilt would be practically impossible to hand quilt.

I made one recently with a layer cake of prints with quilting notions. I did some big stitch quilting. It really turned out pretty.

You can make one out of cotton gauze or double gauze and no batting.

I made several for our senior residence center. They make wonderful lap quilts! Soft and warm and they wash up great!
I have made a lot of rag quilts but I don’t add the batting inside. I live near Galveston so it doesn’t get too cold.
I can understand why you don't use batting living in Galveston!!!

Whatever washer you use, it must have a filter!!! Tons of threads come out when these are first washed!!!

I love your way of explaining how to do a ragtime quilt. I was wondering if batiks will work?
I have only ever used homespuns and flannels. Now I only use flannels. I don't think the batiks would fray very well.

I use 100% cotton flannels purchased from quilt shops.
Do you ever find that the edges of your batting roll up inside the square?
I have not noticed….they may have but not bad enough I noticed. You could do more quilting in each square to help prevent that.
I will ch we close the quilts I have at home to see if that has happened. Have you had issues with that?
