38mph pulling 24,800lbs and you ask is that good eniughbon interstate? Been in many semis, my wifes trainers truck was a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia dd15 15l and with 24,800lbs it would pull down to 35mph same hills. With a 80,000lbs youd be pulling 25mph. Now her 2019 International LT we had the A26 13L and it would run 40mph same weight, or 33mph at 80k. Her 23 model International LT with A26 would run it 42mph same load and her X15 Cummins semi now would probably squeeze out 43mph or 35mph max load. You were doing great, get a banks turbo and a Bundy Sentinel exhaust brake if going to do that much. Definitely check out the new bundy Sentinel, it is a game changer for these idis.
My old IDI FSuperduty trucks with 5.13 gears grossing 18,000lbs I was climbing highway grades at 30-40km/h (19-25 mph) in 2nd gear. Old IDI trucks don’t have top end power my FSuperduty trucks topped out at 80km/h (50mph) loaded or empty in 5th gear.
Graveltrucking yeah you’re problem isn’t/wasn’t the trucks power or ability to go fast it was the gearing 4.10s are better but still don’t like speed either take the same truck and put lower gears in them and they’ll go a lot faster than my truck or your truck with the big ass 5.13s. If you threw some smaller gears in there itd be able to go faster and get a lot better mileage
Yeah, like Operator Benji said, your issue is your gearing. My 84 F250 has an aftermarket 3.84 specifically put in it so it would actually be happy going at highway speeds. These trucks were made for torque, which means everything is geared as low as possible (numerically high)
Oh a turbo would be sweet!!! The truck will tow way more than you’ll ever want behind it. Stopping it is what ya better keep a eye on, make sure you got your electric brakes working on your gooseneck. I’d check in on a HD clutch kit also for her. I love the vid’s buddy.

Put a turbo and a water intercooler on it dont let boost hit over 12psi unless you have head studs. I have studs and intercooler with a 90cc pump and it pulls anything i have. My truck is a 85 with factory turbo with a 3inch down pipe and 3.5 inch exhaust. Max boost is 22 psi

@@BRIANVANDUYN ok. That’s pretty decent. Was just curious if the N/A got better or worse mileage. I run a 12v Cummins but have a lot of respect for OBS fords. Your dual mass flywheel is completely shot that's why it chatters so bad on take off. If you do not fix this immediately your bellhousing on your transmission will be cracked like a spider web if it isn't already and being a zf 5 speed that means a whole new transmission. I would replace clutch and flywheel with a 1 piece flywheel, the dual mass setup is a P.O.S. the springs go right away. I also hope you have a pyro cause I can tell your pumps turned up probably around 1.5 flats you don't want to touch 1200 F for very long. Many idi's have died because of the lack of a 100 dollar gauge. Treat the old girl with some TLC and she will always get you home.
I actually pull heavy with idi ford pickups and a international S series and I thought your truck did well for pulling a 25k trailer with a N/A idi ,but when you pulled up to the scales it shows your not pulling 25k your pulling around 17,500lbs. Don't include the weight of your pickup and say that's what your pulling to make your load sound heavy your gross overall weight truck and trailer is 25k.
we had a 8600lb forklift on a trailer, 1991 7.3l turbo .05 over pistons stage 1.5 injectors. going up some 10+% grades (long hills, bout this whole video worth of climbing) and that thing would not pull it, first gear 30km/h and the water overheated halfway up.
@@Donkusdelux There must of been something not dialed in right. There is no such thing as stage 1.5 injectors. There is moose injectors, dps, and r and d. @@wildrosegarage4208 you should look into stage 1.5 some more, they make them, and thats what I bought when I shaved the heads, upgraded the valves and put the turbo on it My truck is 3.55 gears, i think that is why it doesnt pull well. it will do 180km/h no load 10psi. 4" exhaust, enough fuel to make her dump black when you work it. And i am going up long hills, you climb 4000feet in 20min, the 1999 f550 superduty we have climbs those moutians easy. but the idi just fights it until it overheats, pulling 12k lbs on the flats it runs cool, right at the bottom of "normal" on the dash. @@Donkusdelux let me no who makes stage 1.5 injectors so i know for next time i need some. The best factory injectors is a BB code. Wouldn't feel comfortable hauling that much weight with my 12 valve its a 3/4 ton though too not a 1 ton. I'm in Pennsylvania we have to steep of grades to haul that much weight unless you have at the minimum 800-850 lb ft of torque. The mountains can be pretty tough over here most I'd feel good about is 15k not including the weight of the truck. So that'd be about 23k lbs altogether my 1st gen extended cab weighs about 7,890.

I'm looking at trading the pig for a 87' idi turbo with a 2spd trans. It's a handsome truck but I need it to tow what the pig can if not more. I don't know what power it's making with the turbo. But watching your video gives me some hope on the trade.
Those trucks will do that all day long for their entire life
38mph pulling 24,800lbs and you ask is that good eniughbon interstate?
That's a nice truck you got
I wonder what the egt’s were with that load. Looks like it did a good job!
Yeah a hd clutch will be a must for sure!!!!
BRIAN VANDUYN I have the banks kit on my 6.9 and I love it
That's the thing with idi's. They may not be quick but they will pull all day long. I've got a 94 idit swapped into an 85 f250 dually with a c6 sadly. It's my third idi. I love em. Kinda miss my cummins buuut I'm anxious to see what she does when I start tuning her up.
they don't win races but they will pull down a building!

What are the towing specs on an 89 7.3 single cab? I would think its nowhere near 25k lbs gross? not poking at you, I'm trying to understand how you can be legal at that weight - thanks
use to have a 1997 f350 7.3 powerstroke unloaded that truck would haul azz .. that truck is the only truck ive ever driven that could pass people on the highway to switch lanes easily with a 20ft car hauler loaded with zero turn mowers and scag walk behinds + other miscellaneous tools equipment .. would do 70mph loaded driving into the wind with pedal matted never got hot or complained.
What's that mounted to the ceiling above the rear view mirror?

Dope as hell. Inspiring!
Got a 1993 idi. How much do you think this will run me on?
Love to see your setup

Oh lotsa smoke now...slowing down more lol.
FINALLY snagged a clean 12v dodge all that is gone, now 65 any hill in Ca. 5th gear ac on. Thanks for reminding me not to tow with mine once done, off road beast only. Too dangerous being "that guy"

Whats the MPG when hauling a big load with these IDI 7.3s
I think I was getting around 12
I have the 91 7.3 idi dually. it says the max is only 12500 for towing but im wondering if itd be able to do a lot more. i rarely tow any weight at all though
For reasons I don't understand, they used a real tall reverse gear.
Then there's a short and wide ratio 5sp.
Unlock the front tires then just put it in 4 lo and you will go a lot slower in reverse
Makes me feel ok about pulling a track skid steer and a 35 mini on a tri axle trailer with my powerstroke lol
Hahaha yeah if an idi can tow a 50 then your ps can definently pull a 35 and a skid steer , don't know if id try both at the same time though hahahah

What kind of millage does it get and how does towing effect it?
12-15 hwy 10 towing
@@BRIANVANDUYN ok. That’s pretty decent. Was just curious if the N/A got better or worse mileage. I run a 12v Cummins but have a lot of respect for OBS fords. In all honesty I think the trucks are a little better put together especially interior but I liked the simplicity of the 12v over the PS and the dodge had straight axle Dana 60 in the front. For some reason I have a soft spot for n/a diesels and if it was in the cards I’d own one with the old up to 85 interior. That’s a really cool truck you got there.
Would you suggest manual swapping from an automatic in one of these
Not really
Is the engine stock? Or have you done some mods to it? I have a 93 350 idi dually, I want to do some mods to give it a little more power. I’m in the mountains of Arizona where elevations are 5,000 to 8,000, going up hills I get really slow, even only towing a travel trailer that weighs about 5,000lbs
It's got the pump turned up a smige and new injectors and ip but nothing out of the ordinary
The old guys that own these trucks will say "it may be slow but itll do it". My dad would tow 15k of lumber plus a service body up crazy steep dirt roads, just real real slow.
Yea if your looking to be fast you gotta get a newer diesel if you want something that’ll run forever and pull more than you need to just a bit slower than everyone else these old gals are the way to go

that’s badass🤘
What cameras that? It’s like 360 but can you “aim” it editing?
@SolarBurrito yeah its a 360 camera and i can record in normal wide angle or i can record in 360 and in after production i have to manually select the point of view
But there are stitch lines sometimes where both lenses meet up especially if the object being filmed is close to the camera

What kind of fuel millage do you get with a load and with out a load? Also, who is running your camera? I love your video. Pretty awesome.
About 11 with that load and about 13 without 😭😭😭
@@BRIANVANDUYN You might get better fuel mileage if you open up the intake a little by adding a spacer and a cold air intake, then your engine can really breath like it's suppose to. You will notice a big difference in power and in fuel mileage.
I have a 360 camera that films on both sides then I choose the camera frame after production on my laptop thx for watching! And sharing!

Throw an egt guage in and turn the pump up a little bit
I've got a 1990 7.3 idi 5 speed crewcab dually stock and I've had 13000lbs and it done fine once I got started . No mods or adjustments made to IP or motor . However I would recommend getting some gauges installed so you can monitor your truck better
I had an f350 dually with an after market turbo, 50k miles on it, it was reliable but just that. Hill's are that dump trucks worst enemy. Sold it and bought 3500 6.7 Cummins w 6spd manual and never looked back

Bad transmission mounts and motor mounts can also cause chatter. That was the problem on mine. Mine only did it in reverse though.
Turbo bro....
You know you need it.
That is over 2 times the ratted towing capacity 😂😂 very impressive
The 7.3 diesel is not for yuppies
All the injectors have is different tips so they empty faster. Turbo idi's pull very good when enough fuel is supplied and running around 12psi boost in a healthy motor. My 3 ton s1654 is a non turbo 7.3 and it pulls better than the turbo one you mentioned.
@@wildrosegarage4208 you should look into stage 1.5 some more, they make them, and thats what I bought when I shaved the heads, upgraded the valves and put the turbo on it
My truck is 3.55 gears, i think that is why it doesnt pull well. it will do 180km/h no load 10psi.
Im going to get another 7.3 f350 superduty that last pull we had oil dumping out the rear main seal.
@@Donkusdelux let me no who makes stage 1.5 injectors so i know for next time i need some. The best factory injectors is a BB code. Stage 1s have the tips cut off to alow them to dump quicker they dont realy give you much more fuel if any they are just less restrictive, fueling is all in the pump and a factory pump is around 80cc . As for stage 1.5 this is the first i have heard of it and how they could allow more fuel with out a db2 injection pump that can give more fuel is beyond me. I have been playing with idi's for a very long time.
@@wildrosegarage4208 id have to pull one out and look at the name but i went to a diesel shop and i chose them, but pretty sure we turned our pump up a bit. we have also been working on idi's for a long time, there is not much we havent done to these,.... going to be moving to the superduty 7.3, little harder to work on but they are a tougher engine, had a friend who run 40psi of boost on a stock motor and he sold the truck at 340k km still ran fine and would roast the tires right off it, our first turbo idi melted the valves from 10 psi

So that'd be about 23k lbs altogether my 1st gen extended cab weighs about 7,890.

etty sure Ford set the max GCVWR gross combined weight rating at less than 18,000 lbs for that truck. I think the GVWR was around 8,800 for just the truck. Your door tag will show the GVWR. I am sure more will chime in on this one. Huge topic on the forums. Have to say though, she was pulling her own!
Not sure if links work on here. www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1408586-1989-f-350-diesel-what-towing-weight-2.html
@@Johnditit yeah what makes me sick is how manufacturers dont tell you what their product can actually do because they are trying to cover their back side. Im sure you are some where on point i havent really looked into it that much honestly i did read that the gas powered f350 was rated for a lot higher probably because they where trying to push the gas motors maybe cheaper to produce , .... idk why. , i think it towed great and the electric brakes on the trailer had plenty of stopping power. Sure it was slower than most 4 wheelers going down the road but she was working ! I just cant justify spending 50+k on a new diesel pickup that the door says i can tow..... when this pickup is doing it for 10k.....
GVWR is 9000, RGAWR is 6084. It would still be overweight on a obs dually 10000 GVWR. Regardless I did enjoy seeing it work! Nice truck.
Yeah, but those weight ratings kinda become useless as the vehicle ages, or if you start modifying it. Like mine has a dually adapter kit on it, and an aftermarket rear dif, and I have a 5 speed trans to throw in it. So the weight rating on the door tag really isn't super accurate.
