    The card says "when you take damage" so that would occur during Zargon's turn if it's damage from a monster. Once per turn gives the ability to utilize that card essentially as a reaction. The "once per turn" looks to be the way they get around having to be overly specific within each card. At least that's my assumption.

    we've been using the Monk for nearly 5 quests now (playing Rise of the Dread Moon with a new party of heroes, with KnightFall as the prelude). so far we've treated the water damage-nullifying style just like a healing spell or the Knight's Stalwart skill... you can use it the moment you take damage, which is most likely to occur on Zargon's turn (the debate over death saves means some people really only allow it with potions). the Monk can be killed on Zargon's turn simply by hitting him with two different attacks that reduce his BP to zero. after all, he can't use it twice while monsters are visible. The blazing soul thing I treat like the Lightning Bolt spell except it doesn't harm friendlies. pretty powerful, but you don't often get a chance to use it. on easier quests with fewer and weaker enemies the Monk will seem powerful but he'll also be frustrated he doesn't get to use his fancier attack styles as much, but he would really shine in the harder expansions. the gold he saves from not buying armor can be put towards potions and/or mercenaries, or given to other heroes who need it more.

    I think once per turn means like a cycle of all players including Zargon.
    So if you used a wind attack your turn and now Zargon hits you that same round, you can’t use the water defense.

    About Activation i would say it is intented like this: On you turn you "Activate" a Technique. It is not used yet. Once you actual use it , it is "used and exhausted". Activating a Technique is not exhausting it if you do not use it.

    The best example in my mind is the warlock cards. All of those are one use during that turn. I would be surprised if they allow the monk to be anything different than the warlock. It also wouldn't make sense to recharge the abilities after all enemies are gone if the abilities last more than a single round. If you could keep the abilities all game than why would you get them back? All spells are also instant and done in a single round with exception of rock skin. Even if an elemental ability is allowed to last longer than a single turn, I would have troubles accepting multiple elements to be used at same time.

    If I's purchase this set and use it in a game, I would likely modify the elemental style rule.
    Instead of having to exhaust all other styles before using Fire, I may allow suing ANY style as first, but then require the others to be used in a determined sequence.
    E.G.: Air has to be used directly after Water; Earth directly after Air; Fire directly after Earth.
    So, if I decide to use Fire as first style, the next style the monk uses would HAVE to be Water...
    Simply see no good reason to limit only Fire and think this would make it more interesting (and distinct from spell-casting)

    So Twisting Torrent is somewhat contrary to the Elemental Style explanation card that says only 1 element technique can be used each turn... This seems to be the only technique that does it, so I'm willing to make it the one exception. All the techniques pretty much say when you can use it, so if we leave Twisting Torrent as the exception all other techniques should and will be used on a turn without storage.
    I see Ash reasoned around Speak to Stone that you can activate it on this turn but use it on another, NO! If you can't use any of them you're out of luck and you regain all Elemental Styles (if there are no monsters in line of sight). That's how I'd play at my table.

    • @AshQuest

    The exploration skills are neat tho, makes the monk a versatile scout.

    Dope. I apparently suck at picking where I buy my Heroquest New Releases from. Between Hasbro Pulse and Amazon I have literally picked the wrong site every time when it comes to who starts shipping the items first. I bought my Monk set from Hasbro this time because last time I bought the Elves set from Amazon and the people who ordered it through Hasbro got theirs first. Thx for the video sexy butt!

      This happens to me every time (and apparently a lot of folks!) So, I order from at least two retailers anymore, then cancel whoever doesn't get it to me first.

    You activate twisting torrent specifically when you take damage. If you set a trap off during your turn, you acrivate that and cancel it. If you get hit by a monster on zargon's turn, you activate it on zargon's turn and don't take damage.
    It doesn't make any sense at all to rule it that you activate it on youe turn and wait for the damage to happen, because you haven't taken damage so it's activation clause hasn't happened yet.
    It works the same as the knight's ability to block an attack for an adjacent ally. You do that when they take damage, not on your turn and wait for them to take damage.
    Now, the real broken part of that ability is that your elemental styles reset whenever there are no monsters in your line of sight. So if there are no monsters present and you trigger a trap, or jump down a hatch, or jump into a pit, you take zero damage and the ability immediately resets because there are no monsters present.
    Edit: thinking about it, it also trivializes cold damage from TFH. The real question i have now is whether or not mind point loss counts as damage, since the card doesn't specify body point loss.

    • @josephpotter5766
      @josephpotter5766 10 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, the explainer card is just terribly written. I believe that the intent is that when you expend a card outside of combat you don't recover it immediately, but have to wait until you encounter monsters, defeat those monsters, and only then 'at the end of the combat' you recover them. Which would allow for clever decisions like “do I spend Speak With Stone to find traps outside of combat, find a pit trap, jump it safe with Soaring Dragon, and then maybe even spend Twisting Torment to tank damage from a spear trap or something, and go into my next fight with Fire Element already unlocked, but without Damage Resistance, Extra Attack Dice or Multiattack! It's a great idea. BUT! They don't WORD THE F'ING EXPLAINER CARD RIGHT TO MAKE IT CLEAR THIS IS INTENDED PLAY.
      Basically, I imagine 90% of people are going to house-rule it that way, but they screwed up the card, because the AH staff just don't seem to be good at writing clearly explained and consistent rules.

    • @josephpotter5766
      @josephpotter5766 10 месяцев назад +1

      You know, on additional thought, I feel like it HAS to be the way I put it above... Because seriously... what fight in HQ lasts for 4 rounds? It NEVER happens, if you can't keep spent cards outside of combat, you're literally never going to cast a Fire Element ability. Also I find it infuriating that the Monk gets such extremely powerful fire magic powers... while the Wizard is stuck using the massively nerfed USA versions of fire magic, which are so bad that my players literally never bother taking fire spells...

    • @dudemcfurgusson7179
      @dudemcfurgusson7179 10 месяцев назад +1

      @josephpotter5766 my reading of it is that the fire ability is not supposed to be an all the time thing. Dealing damage to multiple monsters that cannot be defended against is absurdly powerful, nothing is stopping you from using the 3 styles in between fights and just deleting half of what's in a room without even giving them the chance to defend.
      I don't think it's supposed to work the way you're saying it has to just because of how powerful killing anything that has 2 wounds or less while crippling everything else can be.
      I wouldn't rule it like that, I'd just let them have the blanket damage reduction when outside of combat to make up for the fact that they never have more than 2-3 defense dice and will probably eat a lot of damage in combat.

    • @dudemcfurgusson7179
      @dudemcfurgusson7179 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@josephpotter5766 I'll also say that while Fite magic isn't absurdly powerful, my group's wizard always picked fire first because it's cool until the elf got her own spells, and now that I have time magic I'll never take the wizard spells again.
      Sometimes people just go for flavor and not what's best. I can promise that if we let him take nothing but 3x fire magic, that's exactly what he would do.

    • @josephpotter5766
      @josephpotter5766 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@dudemcfurgusson7179 100% legit perspectives. The only issue I would have with giving the monk unlimited out of combat damage resistance is that it just means that my group would just have the monk lead on every path and effectively make the dwarf even more obsolete, since traps literally do nothing to them.
      My wizard was just used to UK fire magic, which was much much stronger, but yeah, if you allowed multiple takes of the same spell they would load up with water *3 without hesitation. Many of the elf spells are also much more 'narative' and badly explained (Warp Wood anyone?).
      My groups tend to prefer a serious challenge, so I upstat a lot of the monsters and throw in harder boss encounters (I think I gave the Dragon at the end of Tomb of Eternal Darkness 12 Body Points lol), so the monks fire attacks, while strong, don't seem overpowered to me, honestly, about the right level, my complaint was that in basic HQ no fight lasts more than two or three turns, so no chance of them ever coming out.

    I'm curious. What's the 5 digit number in white at the bottom of the "Using Elemental Style" card there for? Is the Monk going to be limited to a set print run number? I've looked at other pictures I could find of this card online from different sets and while close to the number shown here it does appear they are different numbers. Anyone else notice this? Anyone heard anything from Hasbro/Avalon about this being limited to a certain print run number? Just don't want another "Guardian Knight" limited print run issue again.

    The water style is not really interpretable. You use it when you take damage. That can be either on your turn OR on zargons turn when being attacked. After use, as in, the damage is cancelled, the card is used and can not be used again. Not that hard to understand IMHO.
