Il cielo in una stanza - Mina
Mina Mazzini is, for Ripley, one of those many elements of a life that he longs for but can only inhabit furtively; of a plane of possibilities that has been, by chance, destined to be witnessed through daydreams. A life that contrasts with the one he has been designated to live. A life of poverty, of nothing, of crime, a life of being unwanted.
He comes to her music, to Mina's music, through this new life, through Dickie, through one of her vinyl records. In this scene, perhaps for the first time, we see his daydreams materialize before his eyes.
Just as Andrew Scott embodies Tom Ripley, Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, and Eliot Sumner as Freddie Miles, with the original version of "Il cielo in una stanza" from 1960, Hildegard de Stefano embodies Mina Mazzini.
Quando sei qui con me
Questa stanza non ha più pareti
Ma alberi, alberi infiniti
Quando tu sei vicino a me
Questo soffitto viola, no, non esiste più
Che vibra per te e per me
Su nell'immensità del cielo
Per te, per me
Nel ciel
Grazie del testo! Bellissima canzone!
Thank you ❤
Grazie mille.
Grazie!
This is way too good for Netflix ! 😍😍😍
AGREE!
Shhh 🤫 don’t tell them
Rubbish they have some great stuff
A hommage to Italian culture and art like no other. Beautiful!
Patricia Highsmith loved Italy and this is an ode to la bella Italia..
Magnifico omaggio a Mina.❤
Truly
Just finished watching Ripley, for the 2nd time. This is one of the (many) knockout scenes.
Takes your breath away, spine tingling and even though I didn't understand a word, my reaction was (and still is) the same as Tom Ripley's.
Welling up.......utterly beautiful setting, song and singer!
I can’t stop playing it 😂 Mina, find her on RUclips.
Hildegard de Stefano is mesmerizing in this too short scene. She has the graceful head and arm movements that makes it such a great tribute to Mina. What an incredible artistic achievement by Netflix this series is. Bravo!
An act as simple as getting some ice cubes from the fridge will never be the same again.
Television finally has its Citizen Kane. I think Ripley is a masterpiece of televisual art. It points to the remarkable potentials of long-form television. It's hard not to see it earning a handful of Emmys.
Yea I’m sad it’s set a record for the least viewed limited series released from Netflix ever…. Sad that this generation is killing film noir
It did??? They don’t know what they’re missing
What a show. The way ripley slowly falls in love with Italy while jumping from place to place to avoid being caught. I wasn’t sure on the black and white at first but after 10 minutes I understood why they did it. Even when you strip away the sun and the colourful buildings the amazing architecture is on show. I liked how the shots would linger on the architecture for a few a bit longer than usual. We just like ripley fall in love with Italy with him.
OMG, Netflix did this? Wtf is going on? Fucking stunning cinematography. Gotta watch this now
Technically it was a Showtime Production originally, but Netflix acquired it after Showtime sold it off during post-production due to getting folded.
Its fantastic, and the music is incredible throughout
I’ve watched it three plus times. I’ll watch this scene and then just keep watching it. Brilliantly shot and acted
Watching die a second time It’s brilliant
While I was watching Ripley the series, this scene captured my eyes. So beautiful and touching..
I have recorded exactly the same.
Perfection 💯
Bravo Bravissimo !!!
Hahaha please don't follow reading if you don't want to know... SPOLIER. I read I wrote... "Para morirse" An spanish sentence meaning we love something so much that we are dead when finished (listening, watching, eating...). And it is real hahaha... Two people listening to Mina in this Caffe will be dead. Hahaha.
What a great tribute to Mina. Got the hairstyle right and even included the mole on her right cheek. Perfetto!
You are a true champion for uploading this. An utterly mersmerising scene from a wonderful series Ripley.
It really is. Shot soooo well
So incredibly beautiful. What a masterpiece by Zaillian.
Great scene only in the breathtaking, beautiful amazing Italy and with Stings daughter!!!!
Favourite scene from an amazing series. Amazing attention to detail.
The actress is just stunning.
Quien es la actriz que canta?
Hildegard de Stefano playing young Mina in this scene
Mina!! She is present in all the chapters or Ripley as she is in all the chapters of my life. Ti amo come un pazzo!! ❤❤❤
Maravilhosa interpretação da musicista e atriz Hildegard De Stefano
Love this song I fall in love again ❤plus a heart capturing movie🌹🌹
WOW! I have no idea what she was saying but that was a mesmerizing scene. The black & white makes it more intimate somehow and the actress/singers performance was perfection. I think i replayed this scene 20 times lol
Rivetting, blessed, cascade of beauty, poise, elegance and voice. Breathtaking exploration of sensuality. Encore!
Talented Mr Ripley with Damon and Law is a great film and one of my all-time favourites, so I was excited about this adaptation and how they will tell Ripley's story again but with a new look and new perspective on the character. I think Andrew Scott was phenomenal as Ripley, a cold, merciless, and conniving con man/killer who clearly was chasing a lavish lifestyle through other people in means to get a satisfaction that he believes he deserves. But what makes this performance stand out to me more than Damon's, even tho I love Damon's portrayal as well, is that this Ripley is completely cold, he is not needy or begs for attention or approval. He is just a bad guy. Some may say a narcisstic sociopath or psychopath. He barely showed any emotion whatosver to the people he hurt or killed, the only thing he cares about is making sure he is in a good place and anything else does not matter unless he is feeling great, other people are just toys in means to get what he wants. But he also appreciates art and life in his own way, but the sad part is that in reality, he is a loner, a runner and seems like he never was truly loved for who he is as a person I mean I could go on and on but I hope you understand what I am trying to say. Oh, and also, he is definitely less charismatic than Damon's version. With Damon's portrayal, he was oozing charisma in this one. Ripley is just a creepy, calculated manipulator with a look of a complete Psycho. Either way, I appreciate both performances and like both of them in they own ways, I think the Damon's movie version is more of a entertaining film but this one is definitely more for film buffs and people who appreciate authenticity, amazing acting, masterful cinematography, outstanding sets and great writing. Also, this one feels like straight out of the book, I imagine reading one of those books and imagining these scenes playing in my head while I am reading one of these pages, this even feels like a book but I can see how this series won't be for everybody and that's understandable. It's a very neo-noir/psychological while the movie was more of a fun thriller. Don't get me wrong the movie was still very well made, but it was definitely more colourful in it's approach and more for mainstream audiences than the show Ripley, I can see some people absolutely be bored by this but I really enjoyed it overall. Would give it a solid 8/10.
Wow fantastic song , fantastic scene !!
The Sky in the Room (English)
When you are here with me
this room has no more walls
but trees
infinite trees.
When you are here near me
this purple ceiling,
no, it doesn’t exist anymore.
I see the sky above us.
We stay here
abandoned
as though there were
nothing, nothing left in the world.
A harmonica is playing.
To me it seems like an organ
that vibrates for you and for me
up in the immensity of the sky.
For you, for me:
in the sky.

Ripley is a despicable person but when moved by an Italian song he becomes human, just like us. A narrative note of an absolutely brilliant subtlety and of extreme importance for the character-audience relationship.
Did you notice though, that only Tom’s LEFT eye teared up at the end of the song? His right eye stayed dry. Psychopaths have very differently wired brains than ours. Parts of their brains are literally shrunken and the empathy centers are weak to non-existent. I wonder if anyone else caught this about Tom’s left eye tearing. I studied psychopathy and psychopaths once several years ago and it is an interesting topic! Scary as hell, though.
@@marjoriestclair I did not notice that. Interesting stuff.
Just WOW.
Italians live in a parallel world. Often unknown. The world has lost an important piece of art, music.... Now with the internet, lost masterpieces are being rediscovered. As if another world had existed.
Beautiful words ,so true❤
La canzone piu bella del mondo
Priceless
I just learned a peculiar detail that changes the reading of the scene. The original song was composed by Gino Paoli about an encounter with a prostitute. I don't refute that you can have a meaningful time when you pay for sex, but it strikes me interesting it could be seen as a comment on how Ripley is basically imagining himself as someone who has emotions in this scene just as he is imagining Dickie wants him the same way, just as a paid sex encounter is an imagined love making - the partner is not doing it out of emotion or lust but to make a living. And for Ripley meeting people is also just a transaction, as he is unable to see other people as anything other than means to his goals and little else. So Ripley is in essence both the sex worker's customer and the sex worker here.
Essa cena é magistral. Tudo é lindo, os atores, a música, a fotografia. Minissérie que não sai da minha cabeça. Bravo !
Scena da una realtà virtuale. Capolavoro di un addio
Excelente serie y hermosa canción.
I watched this scene prolly 20000 times for this scene 🎬 she says when u n me r together in our room no ceiling exits there is the sky above us and no wall but suddenly abandoned trees infinite trees surround us and The sky is for you and for me. 💞💗
Ha same here
I believe the audio is from this movie

@@Anthony-wp7tz yes there’s many movies where she sings ‘il cielo in una stanza’, it was very popular. And it’s been revived in the Netflix series Ripley, based on the novel
The talented Mr Ripley. Both r great 😊
Maravilloso
wow, wow, wow. I'm completely smitten.
Eliot Sumner is so perfect as Freddie, just the right mix of softness and protection, both inviting and wary. Freddie know immediately that there's something up with ... "Ripley" ... "Ripley" ... and then the not-so-subtle signal to Dickie. Hildegard de Stefano's impeccable outfit, spectacular hair and spotless physical rendition are just mesmerizing. A short cover, less that 2 minutes, but spot on. Enjoy.
Lindíssimo!!!!
finally a real ART
Bravissima!!!❤
Mr Ripley e rimasto encantato.
The moment he tastes the magic. The moment he decides there is no going back anymore. He needs to do what needs to be done.
"la luce! sempre la luce!"
This scene should have been in the movie as well
Beautiful!
Che musica da Mina circa 1960
Very touching!
Eargasm
God damn this was shot nicely.
Thanks
fantastic!
Perfetto.
Every time I hear them say "Ripley," it brings to mind:
"Ripley, she doesn't have bad dreams because she's just a piece of plastic!" (Newt, Aliens II)
😉😉
❤❤❤
pointbreak x Ripley after this scene.
Why do you think Tom Ripley teared up during this scene?
Mina is, for Ripley, a sort of a symbol, an embodiment of a life he longs for but has been destined to witness from afar, from his own daydreams. Tom is someone divorced from the world and others by his own fate. Orphaned, raised as a moral imposition, and not by will (by his aunt), he resented the world as a reflection of her and his own life.
When he sees in the midst of an existence of nothingness and miserable crimes, by pure chance, a bridge to that life that he could only imagine, he crosses it forever. Boarding a train across Europe, he writes to his aunt, "You're free of me now. And I of you."
In his odyssey, in Atriani, in Dickie, he finds the archetype of his imagination; a life of hedonism, of possibilities, of beauty. Still, a life that is not his own, that he can only inhabit furtively. But at least, for the first time, he can inhabit. Just like with Mina, when he sees her on Dickie's vinyl, when he listens to her on the record player. When he travels to Naples, and in a cafe, going down the stairs, his daydreams perhaps for the first time materialize before his eyes.
It's simply the unquestionable beauty of that performance, her elegance and implicitly understanding the meaning of the song that describes a shared, ephemeral moment between lovers, even if he didn't speak Italian well at this point. Yet he already has fallen in love with Dickie or at least what he represents.
It's so clever and subtle, superb acting by Andrew Scott. His tangible affinity with great art is ne of the elements that has us rooting for Ripley, despite our better moral judgement.
@@feniaax well done, very eloquently put.
He looks sooooo insane
La luz, siempre la luz
I’m gonna get the papers get the papers
where was this scene filmed?! Please 🫶🙏🏻
Naples
sensitive killer
Qual o nome dessa atriz/cantora?
Must. Learn. Italian.
Who is this woman?
This version of 'Il cielo in una stanza' is by Mina.
The first and original version of the song was written and recorded by Gino Paoli
Gracias miles!!!
@@BeigbederUtuve Gracias Senor! This moment in that tv show was perfect. She impressed me a lot. I m still watching that part even i finished that tv show :)
@@federicoklein4935 No. The song was written and composed by Gino Paoli, but the first recording of it (and release) was performed by Mina Mazzini. Gino later recorded and released his own rendition as well, when he achieved notoriety in the music scene.
@@feniaax Exactly!!!!!!!!!
what are the drinks on the table?
Wine
Made in Italy
At 1:45 min in she’s the female Julian Casablancas 💘
The casting of Freddie is completely ridiculous.
Just the foolish passion of USA' s intellighentsija for ITALIAN'S Ghosts, Amen
Such a weird 2024 conceit to pop a woman in the role of Freddy and expect the characters to act like she's a man and for viewers to also pretend that she's a man. What a bizarre, anachronistic thing to do to an otherwise excellent production. Completely blew the suspension of disbelief.
Eliot is androgynous enough to pull it off. Many things in the world to be upset about and you choose this? Bless your heart!
@@marjoriestclair Well it would be weird to start complaining about the wars in Ukraine or Palestine for instance, in a comments section for a clip from Ripley, wouldn't it?
@@joewhite22 I think you know exactly what I meant here. Stop bitching about stupid stuff, in other words.
@@marjoriestclair It's not bitching though, it's someone giving their opinion on a show that they otherwise find excellent. Is there a rule that says you can only praise a show? I happen to agree with their criticism too. I don't find the casting of this character convincing.
@@joewhite22 I think the casting was perfect. You don’t. Fine. Enough said. It’s just the petty shit flung at a perfectly good actor who did a wonderful job in spite of your esteemed opinion that seems a bit vapid. Cheers.
The only thing that isn't perfect in this clip is the terrible casting of Freddy.
If I have to be honest, I detest "diversity quotas" in casts, but I don't feel like it was the case here. I found Eliot's interpretation completely organic, credible. I believed the character. I didn't see someone playing it.
💯
@@feniaax Fair enough. But it was impossible to believe she was a man.
Eliot was perfect as Freddy.
@@feniaax Eliot was amazing.
Heard about. Intrigued now. Haven't seen a big one since True Detective. This the 13th adaptation of a Highsmith novel. It feels commensurate with this very troubled period. Purple Noon was Alain Delon's big break through in the role of Ripley in 1960. Dreams of life what ifs.....
I'll read the book if you watch the show
Addendum. I've downloaded it on kindle!
I think the voice is Mina's version, meaning that the voice does not belong to the woman on screen - which makes the lipsync all the more impressive to be honest, it's 100% perfect.
Of course, Mina's voice. Nothing sounds like her voice
She IS playing young Mina in this scene 😊
It also gives it a slightly Lynchian feel, which totally works for the whole mounting dread vibe.
I think that you are right but I have never heard a version with Mina where the intro is piano solo and a mix with her voice so much in the foreground as this one. To me this one is the best version .
@@thguillaume Totally agree with you. I heard here a new clean voice and as I listened to other songs of this actress-violinistplayer-singer I believe she is so great... Because she played as Mina, black dress, so relaxed, finger moving, singing... And she confused a lot of people thinking she is not singing, playback... But she does in just two minutes a great performance, marvelous to remember and don't forget. And we cannot forget the producer and who was the responsibility of choosing this great woman. Perfect work. Thanks!!!
