  • The is the second video of my glow plug removal quest. In the first I sprayed the snapped glow plug with Liqui Moly Injector and glow plug dismantling aid. I hoped that it will dissolve the accumulated carbon deposits and make the removal a lot easier. It seems that in my case it didn't work.
    Well a least the glow plug removal kit did its job.

    Great video and thank god you got it out!
    Just removed 3 no problem and the 4th one just spins… agh!
    I’ll need to pull it out and tap into the body. Then clean the old threads up.

      Ooh, it's a pain in the ass. Just be very careful.

    It's best to soak injectors in PB Blaster or WD40 for a day or two before removing. Also, typically no more the 20 NM on each glow plug when removing. Lastly, start to tighten first, then slowly begin to remove, then tighten and remove and hopefully they will come out without a problem. Some like to warm the engine too and then let cool off slightly before removing. The key is not to put too much torque on them while removing.

      Mechanics are aware, but some are just to tight and will snap. Then you have to use one of these kits. I’ve changed 26 glow plugs in 30 years. Only ever had 2 snap, from a TOYOTA to lol.

      50% acetone and 50% transmission fluid works muchhhhhh better here. And quicker too

    Well done. I admire your patience, I would have given up and taken it to a mechanic.
    Loved your comment about using some duct tape

    It's easy when the plugs are on the top or front. Try getting them out around the back..

    Excellent work. I used the same set last year and while I broke the stepped drill bit, it did enough to allow me to get the rest of the glow plug out.
    You’re lucky the tip of the glow plug didn’t stay in the cylinder head. That’s even more of a nightmare job

    I wish glow plugs had stronger material 😧 I snapped two of my glow plugs on my previous Astra H 1.3 CDTI. Took her to a mechanic, but he had to stop midway because he could see outcome if he continued drilling. I have a Astra H 1.7 Cdti now with 4 working glow plugs. Maybe my mistake was that i tried replacing the glow plugs while the engine was cold and not hot 🤔 I am kinda terrified to do this again, but at the same time, i wanna try again.

    I don’t understand how it works? Your pulling while it’s still threaded?? Won’t it damage the head?? And if you tap the glow plug thread out, won’t the rest fall in to the bore?

    • @icku
      @icku  10 дней назад

      If you don't understand it after watching the full video, this repair is probably not for you. And if you try it you may end up making more damage.

    You mentioned that you used 5mm drill bit for the inner aperture of the glow plug, could this have been the reason why it snapped the first two times ? The walls became too thin after the drilling and threading. I need to do this job myself and I'm thinking about using a 4.25mm drillbit and make an M5 thread in the glow plug. What do you think ?

      Pay attention - one is just pulling upwards, the other is twisting the metal and breaking it

    your drill bit is too big which causes a thin wall to snap the stock tip of the glow plug.

    • @icku
      @icku  Год назад +3

      The drill bit is perfeclty suited for the application. The drilling takes place only in the upper part of the plug. The glow plug snaps way below that due to its walls being manufactured thin ;)

    Твойте свещи изглеждат дълги, идеални за разпробиване. Мойте понеже са 10см и като махнем главата на свеща и подгревната част имам едно 3,5 макс 4 см за разпробиване. Никой от сервизите в моя град не му се занимава с тази процедура и си карам с една скъсана (превъртяна) свещ.

    • @icku

      Има комплект за вадене на скъсани електроди на подгревни свещи - демек не е останало нищо освен най-тънката нагряваща част на свеща. При добро желание от някой майстор има начин и твоята да се извади :Д

      Spark plugs and glow plugs are two completely different things. Spark plugs are for petrol engines and spark continuously to ignite the petrol to keep the engine running. Glow plugs are for diesel engines and are only used for heating the diesel when starting the engine. Once started compression keeps the engine running and the glow plugs switch off.
