  • The sap of sap from maple trees can be a bit complicated at times.
Here, we have 3 taps in a large Silver Maple.
Tap #1 is still frozen, with a sapcicle hanging from the spile.
Tap #2 has a modest amount of sap that is dripping from the tap. WWE might get 1 gallon of sap in this bucket at the end of the day.
Tap #3 is dripping steadily and has yielded 3 gallons of maple sap already today.
Why does this happen? Well, Tap #1 is located on the south side of the tree and the morning sub warmed the tree trunk, driving sap within the cells in this portion. The warmer side of the tree may have allowed moisture to be available at the roots.
Tap #1 is on the North side of the tree. This is the cold side, and at 36 degrees, this side of the tree has stayed cold, preventing sap flow.
Tap #2 is a combination of these factors.
Remember, during the season all taps tend to yield the same flow. However, early in the season, sun and warmth can help the south side of the tree have early sap flow.
    Thanks for watching.
