This movie is one of my childhood favorites, it has a lot to do with Haku, practically everyone around my age would admit they had a crush on Haku when they were little. The reason why Haku forgot his name was because humans destroyed his home, a river spirit is a river's human persona that is connected to the river, and since Haku's river was destroyed, he lost the connection to his river as the human persona of the river until Chihiro reminded him of his true identity, he saved Chihiro from drowning, I always view their love story as a "You fall in love with your boss" and a lot of times those type of stories have endings similar to this one that is bittersweet.
A lot of this movies background has to do with Shintoism, which is the traditional japanese religion. It centers around "kami" (gods and spirits) which Japan has thousands of. Small and weak ones or very powerful ones, some evil, some good and most are somewhere inbetween. A kami could belong to a river, a tree or even a rock or a manmade item (like a mirror, a necklace etc.) anything can have or be a kami and they'd come in all shapes and sizes. Some kami are long forgotten or unknown, some have lots and lots of shrines dedicated to them. Thats a very rough description but basically Chihiro wandered into the world of kami. Thats why some might look a bit human-like while others don't at all, but they still recognize that she doesn't belong there. So the bathhouse is kind of a spa for the gods.
