  • Smarten yourselves up out there, the President's coming to Sesame Street! From Season 10, aired on March 26, 1979, here's Episode 1271. Everything is a repeat in this one, including the street story itself (Episode 1044 from 1977). Mucho thanks to my presidential candidate, @Sesame Maniac. At the time, in real life, Jimmy Carter was in the White House at the end of his term. He was soundly thrashed by Ronald Reagan in 1980. Still lots of goodies to dig into, so let's get at her!
The main street story starts when Mr. Hooper (Will Lee) reads an exciting newspaper story telling the gang that the President of the United States' motorcade would be detouring through Sesame Street today. They all start to spiffy the place up as Big Bird (Caroll Spinney) decides to write a poem for the President. While they're cleaning, Olivia (Alaina Reed Hall) and Big Bird sing about the places and people they care for as they're "Walkin' Down My Street". Oscar (Caroll Spinney) displays his outdated flag, and demonstrates his 11-gun salute ("Why 11? He only got 53% of the vote!"). The last shot propels him into the air.
REPEAT MUPPETS: Ernie (Jim Henson) and Bert (Frank Oz): Ernie's home from Camp Winnewonga sooner than expected; Monsterpiece Theater: Upstairs, Downstairs w/Grover (Frank Oz); Sesame Street News Flash: The Elves and the Shoemaker; The Amazing Mumford makes Grover's carrot disappear; Muppet Sandwich Items Cooperate; "J Friends".
REPEAT CELEBS: Pianist and humourist Victor Borge (1909-2000) shows high and low notes; Whitman Mayo (1930-2001; "Sanford and Son") is disappointed when he can't stay up in the air as he tries to demonstrate UP, but a group of kids can (with the help of video trickery).
REPEAT CARTOONS: Pinball #10 (Jeff Hale); Ten Turtles and C for Cat (Bud Luckey); Dot Bridge #1; man opens an OPEN and the people inside ask him to close it; Vaudeville duo Herman Happy and Stanley Sad; man demonstrates up and down (Al Jarnow); three tiny people climb up three flower stems (Etienne Delessert); C for Canary (role reversal); Abierto w/Ali Baba; Jenny and Jeff and the Jacket; boy rescues fallen baby bird and, in return, the mother bird saves the boy from embarrassment when he pops his overalls; J Family Jamboree; The J Commercial; The J Train; ship captain orders the numbers 1-20 into a boat - which promptly sinks.
REPEAT FILMS: Joe Raposo sings George Gershwin's "Funny Face" over zoo monkeys and composed the music for one with a baby chick hatching from an egg; Traffic lights; boy makes fruit salad; Body Parts vs. Heavy Equipment w/Brian Henson; Where do potatoes come from?; Up and Down w/trapeze artists, The Fabulous Four Flying Flatirons; George the Farmer 1-10 with barrels.
