The program needs to realize that the childless need to eat too. Years ago, I lived off of ramen noodles and food banks was def a lot of help. I walked everyday to work in a dangerous city because I couldn't afford a car. I tried to pick up shifts as I could. I got rejected for food stamps because I made too much money. All my money went to rent and bills and nothing left over for food. I asked $20 for food which I always hated asking for anything but it was always a No. Even family. Luckily my situation changed as soon as I worked to get my license and now work at my job plus a few side hustles. I am working hard so I never have to experience this again but God bless everyone who is struggling 🙏❤️

We even used to give vouchers out to people who couldn't pay so they could come in for some groceries later. We also had some specifically for mothers who needed diapers, milk or food for multiple kids.
We were told to stop them, tell them it was alright and we understood what was going on and then offered the vouchers we had. Then just asked that they come up front to ask for what they needed next time. The thing is too, we never had someone take advantage of this. So it not only showed me that good people fall on hard times but that corporate chains make more than enough money to be this generous. 😂

You don't even know their condition; if it's an unusual one, you'd be lucky to live within driving distance of a good specialist. Not to mention what traveling would be like for them.

The cuts made to the SNAP program are obscene. Covid emergency funds helped, but now with the increased prices of food people are forced to make really difficult decisions about what to buy in a given month. Then there are the things SNAP doesn’t cover, so more decision making involves going without prescription medication, necessary repairs to a vehicle or home, etc. The cut to SNAP benefits will result in individuals and families spending much time, energy, and funds trying to locate free or low cost food and other supplies - and these are people who are either already working at low paying jobs or receiving disability benefits. As someone in the latter group it’s incredibly difficult just to get basic things done during the day let alone using energy I don’t have trying to navigate food pantry and other resources hours. Then there’s the issue of physically getting to each place when I’m often stuck in bed without anyone to do that for me. This is a shitty country to live in when it comes to social policies and benefits. Even when legislators have tried finding food using the same amount of SNAP funds the experience is rarely enough to influence legislation that would increase available funds.

I grew up dirt poor. My parents split up, mum had mental health problems (several admissions to psych ward) so we were on welfare. I do not wish poverty on anyone. It is a demeaning way of life. We were the epitome of 'poor white trash.' Most people looked at us like we were dirt. There were no food banks or soup kitchens or school lunch programs when I was young. Mother got the welfare check and hopefully there was food until the end of the month.
Poverty truly is like quicksand, it's very difficult to climb out. Thankfully, I had a bit of brains and broke free. Even though I can afford a new car, I'm still driving my used 2009 Mazda. When I bought my house in 2006, I chose a house way under my mortgage approval limit. I can afford food, but I grow a vegetable garden every year and have apple and pear trees in the back garden.
People are struggling everywhere. Eventually, these handouts will come to an end. The need will be greater than the supply. Then what? Desperate people do desperate things. Shoplifting and looting are already out of control. It's going to get worse.

Wolfe County, like most of Eastern Kentucky, is historically Democratic. In 2000, George W. Bush narrowly won the county and became the first Republican to do so, but the county still proved its Democratic loyalty by supporting John Kerry by a comfortable margin in the next election. However, the county has indeed drifted away from the Democrats at the presidential level as Mitt Romney won the county 60% to 30% in 2012, and Donald Trump with an even wider margin of 68% to 28%.
Wolfe remained reliably Democratic at the state level for some time after ceasing to favor the Democratic Party at the presidential level; it voted against Matt Bevin in both of his gubernatorial elections and, along with nearby Elliott County, it was, until 2020, one of only two counties in Kentucky to have voted against Senator Mitch McConnell in each of his elections. In 2020, however, both counties voted for McConnell over his Democratic challenger, Amy McGrath.[13] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfe_County,_Kentucky
