The new format is fine Tim. I can appreciate that when your company is paying you to do a job, your job deserves your full attention. I wonder if a version would be possible and acceptable, where you just leave the camera and live audio going and you totally ignore it and us? The main thing is to keep your company happy and comply with their conditions though. So glad to be able to continue seeing your work Tim
The narration is what really sets this apart. Its very interesting to watch but its nothing without the knowledge you share with us. I feel like I'm on the bridge with you and you are taking an interest in teaching me how to do this. I can feel the passion you have for this and I feel like you're sharing it with me.
@TimBatSea I can only speak for myself, but I for one truly enjoy watching a proficient and dedicated professional no matter the task. I am guessing you have many years in your field, and I think that is why I watch when I can remember to do so. my father was a lifelong sailor from 1936 until the late 60's and he enjoyed all of it immensely with the exception of a few years during WWII as he was at Pearl Harbor when all hell broke loose and during the Korean and the early Vietnam debacles. Thank you for the content that you contribute for us.
Tim, Your voice-over format is better than I expected. KUDOS! Not being able to see the chart plotter probably makes it more difficult for newbies to understand your explanation of the predictor line, but thanks for doing what you did. When I watched last night's video of you explaining your new format, my heart fell a bit, but it's good to know that this will work. I will still miss the clatter of the cavitation while you back-down. Love what you do, and that you're still here.
I helped out a friend the other day and also got my second load towards my PIC. The harbor feels quite small at 0400 working with a guy who has been on this harbor since the days Exxon was ESSO. In the darkness he is calling tugs by name hundreds of yards away without using AIS. Knows the captains, knows where they are heading, what they’re hauling etc.
Thanks , Captn. Tim. I enjoyed the new video . While its not in real time as you used to be able to do, I think it gives you the chance to include a more detailed explanation of what is going on and why. There were also ships or landmarks that you used call out because you could see them from the wheel house but we couldn't see through the lens. In your new narration you see what the audience sees. To add to your wonderful explanation of forward thrust vs. reverse thrust I remember Captn. Tim's early lesson on tug boat hull configuration and how the bow sits much deeper in the water than the stern and your reverse thrust gets devided up and disipated when it hits the back side of the bow. Enjoyed the video. Its great to have you back. Hope you feel better soon. CUOTO
That was really neat to be able to see the other boat coming in behind you maneuvering. It was interesting to see it from an "outside" perspective, since we usually see it from the "inside" on the channel. Hope you are back to feeling better!
Great share Cap! I really appreciate the privilege of being in the wheelhouse with an expert who can give the lay of the situation in friendly terms. I feel like I learn something with every viewing, even in long form it is a pleasure to be alongside! CUOTO ~__/)__*
Thank you Tim. The new format works very well for me although doing the voiceover will take you time. Very much appreciated. When I caught Covid last year it really knocked me back, so you take care and rest up. CUOTO

Shopping cart analogy is perfect. I have a twin engine boat and I explain it as maneuvering the shopping cart. Each hand on the cart handle can push or pull the same as the prop thrust. Your shopping cart just happens to be really big. Haha. Imagine if there was tide and wind in the grocery store.
When I worked at Harley many years ago we kept our equipment at the end where you turned. I always found the worst part about that channel is when they were docking ships and having to deal with the wash. Nice work there cap!!!
Really enjoyed the video. We have a sailboat docked in New Bedford harbor. The harbor is the staging area for the wind farm being built off Marthas Vineyard, therefor there is a major increase in tugboat action. Thanks to AIS, it's easy to make contact with the captains and coordinate our courses as to not conflict. Our conversations have been as friendly and informative as listening to your narration. Must be a trait inherent to tug boat captains!! Thanks Jack
I would like to think so. Thank you very much for watching Jack. When you see the Tug Jaguar, be sure to call Captain Charlie and tell him I said hi. (He is an old friend). CUOTO

Very enjoyable video. And great explanations as usual. Actually, really great explanations. I've been underwater when ships pass by, sphincter puckering experience. Looking forward to the next installment.
New format is fine. I really liked the moments when I felt like being with you in the wheelhouse, but I get where they come from with new format. Although nothing beats the hearing your live commentary, and when with a fresh cup of coffee, "we" were picking up the barge in the morning. Stay safe and see you at the next one.
A 360 camera might be a good addition Tim, would allow you to pan around and show whats happening astern or to port or starboard for that matter. Loving the new format. I think you will have to man the camera in your downtime though so we can still feel as though we are part of the crew lol.
The pier is on pilings. The concrete doesn't go all the way to the bottom. The water flows under them. That's why you have current in those places. Good explanation on how rudders work. Your sailboat also has a really large rudder compared even to the tugboat which has large rudders for a power boat as part of the function of a rudder on the sailboat is to balance sail forces along with the keel and develop lift while moving under sail. They put flanking rudders on towboats that are used on the Western Rivers so they can steer while going astern. These rudders are located forward of the props. I thinks that the new format of the videos is going to work well, Tim. I understand that the circumstances have changed and that is beyond your control, but I think that you have adapted well. Thanks.
I'm subscribed to Chief Makoi, a marine engineer. He said that the ships can run diesel at sea but when they approach land they need to switch to a cleaner fuel in order to meet international marine rules for air pollution.
Thank you very much for watching Larry. I think you may have misinterpreted Chief Makoi. They burn heavy fuel in international waters and switch to diesel (also known as maneuvering fuel) when close to land. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea Sorry, I think you're right. But it sounds like it is not plain diesel anymore. Also, I've seen fuel oil number 5 before and it is nasty stuff. It has the viscosity of a slug.
I was engaged in diving operations with 3x divers flags up plus day shapes, BDB. A ‘fizz boat’ speeds over and asks what all the flags are about. I replied that he’d probably run over a diver. 😱 “Oh, OK”, he says and zooms off. 😳 GO FIGURE. Stay safe out there. 👍
Thanks Tim, new format is great, explaining as you view the video. The saying "worse things happen at sea" is very appropriate to describe some of the incidents to potentially occur?
When you are a kid all kinds of ideas come to you. I was keen on bolt-on powered stern units which could be attached and detached easily from load carrying hulls, meaning crew needn’t wait for loading/ unloading. They’d just find another hull to shove…Like your barge shoving business but ocean going. Less practical was vessels containing heavy plastic concertinas in the holds. The idea was that tankers needn’t sail home in ballast but could fill up, say with grain on the return leg (or anything but oil). Unloading the grain would help reduce the energy needed to fill the ‘oil’ concertina on the next trip. Filling one concertina would displace (push back) the other one. Tim, do you have any radical ideas as to where things might go next?🤔 By the way, the light and colours in this vid is beautiful!
Hi Captain, it works fine, and in some ways it is a lot better as you are not narrating live with the interruptions that were on the previous format, not that i minded them BTW. Hope you are recovering from your COVID infection. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Malta
Thank you for watching Stephen. Hey! Crisalída and I hope to get to Malta next year or the year after in SVP! Hope we can share a drink with you when we get there. CUOTO
I drive a semi truck and before that a hotshot (dually pickup towing a trailer). I created content about my trips and posted them here on YT but there's the issue of what I'm doing as I'm driving down the road. Using a cell phone or camera while driving a commercial motor vehicle and getting caught can lead to fines that are in the many thousands of dollars, both to me as the driver and to the company which is me in my case. I have warned many other trucker RUclipsrs about some of what I observed in their videos as they are posting themselves in distracted driving situations. I'll certainly miss your old video format but I completely understand... it's the reality of the world we live in now. It certainly will not stop me from being here every Tuesday!
Interesting maneuver on this one, and I liked the format. It would be better to get your 'live voice' during recording, but this is about as good. I like to see your throttle / steering adjustments as you go, but I like to get technical about things and that's just me.
The VO works and if it allows you to speed up the less interesting parts I think that that is a good thing. Compressing a 45 minute video to 20ish minutes makes it more likely that I will watch the entire thing.
The new format isn’t bad. Could You add a radio scanner to pickup the chatter between you and the crew and Bridge to Bridge? That’s the only part that I miss that isn’t in the new format. I would be happy to donate a scanner and battery/power solutions to the channel if you’re interested. Would Program it and everything for Marine VHF. Let me know.
Thank you very much for watching and for your generous offer. This is just the beginning of us navigating through the new restrictions, but I think that we may be able to add something like that in the future. CUOTO
Hi Tim, Years ago you could show us the barge and your engine and rubber controls on a split screen. I really enjoyed those shots. It showed how you manipulate the tug to get the barge where you wanted it. With your new video format is it possible to do split screens again? Thanks, nice work Tim.
IMHO: "Why are you moving so slow?" - "Because you should never approach something faster than you're willing to hit it!". Everyone keep in mind, that tug and barge have a combined mass of several thousand tons. While Tim is doing that rotation, the whole thing keeps moving in to direction they were originally going. While they're turning, Tim has no ability to control that speed (basically, he's skidding). Imagine if he was going faster and didn't time the spin exactly right and the whole thing going haywire like one of these Mustangs you sometimes see videos of... only that a Mustang is maybe 2 tons, while this is e.g. 6000 tons half empty. Full? 9000 tons (just a guess, correct me if I'm wrong)
The new format is fine Tim.

Unloading the grain would help reduce the energy needed to fill the ‘oil’ concertina on the next trip. Filling one concertina would displace (push back) the other one.
Tim, do you have any radical ideas as to where things might go next?🤔
By the way, the light and colours in this vid is beautiful!
Thank you very much for watching Stephen. We all have ideas, but not money or time to make most of them happen. 😂 CUOTO
Awesome. Thank you very much! CUOTO
Feedback.
I think I like the new format.
Outstanding! Thank you very much. CUOTO
All good, but do miss the radio calls with the crew.
Good luck.
Thank you for watching Geoff. CUOTO
Hi Captain Tim!
CUOTO
Hi Mellissa. Thank you so much for supporting the channel. CUOTO
15:15 - If you look at the western end of the channel, near that U-turn ramp, there is a creek that dumps into the channel.
Thank you for watching. CUOTO
When I worked for weeks we put those pads on the dock current is a pain in there
💯!!!! Thank you very much for watching George. CUOTO
Interesting maneuver on this one, and I liked the format. It would be better to get your 'live voice' during recording, but this is about as good. I like to see your throttle / steering adjustments as you go, but I like to get technical about things and that's just me.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
The VO works and if it allows you to speed up the less interesting parts I think that that is a good thing. Compressing a 45 minute video to 20ish minutes makes it more likely that I will watch the entire thing.
Great! Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
BTW- I can get use to the new format! I can still go back and look at past videos.
Hello from Chiang Mai Thailand
Thank you Frank. CUOTO
The new format isn’t bad. Could
You add a radio scanner to pickup the chatter between you and the crew and Bridge to Bridge?
That’s the only part that I miss that isn’t in the new format.
I would be happy to donate a scanner and battery/power solutions to the channel if you’re interested. Would
Program it and everything for Marine VHF. Let me know.
Thank you very much for watching and for your generous offer. This is just the beginning of us navigating through the new restrictions, but I think that we may be able to add something like that in the future. CUOTO
I can see that you're on the slip between P.N.C.T. and Maher Terminals.
Thank you very much for watching Jay. CUOTO
Hi Tim, Years ago you could show us the barge and your engine and rubber controls on a split screen. I really enjoyed those shots. It showed how you manipulate the tug to get the barge where you wanted it. With your new video format is it possible to do split screens again? Thanks, nice work Tim.
Thank you for watching Art. I'm not sure that will be possible again, but we'll see. CUOTO
Man you be all screwed up with the wind was really blowing there we twist me everywhere
Thank you for watching Michael. CUOTO
also a single screw will almost always pull to port when backing.
Thank you for watching Roger. Yes, but only if it has a right hand wheel. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea I ran fishing boats(100-125 ft.} The only left hand wheel I've seen was on a twin screw.
Seems about right. Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
Brought some King Oscar gold to a posh dinner party without an intention to serve but, was asked if I had any? So, that went well.
Awesome! They really are amazing aren't they? Thank you for watching. CUOTO
