I had a friend who loved RTS games, and I just used to see him playing those games.
Then one day he got Age of Mythology with its sequel from somewhere. I was so much impressed, because there was mythology involved, so I asked him if I can borrow it once he finishes the game story.
But when he gave me the game box, he instead gave me Rise of Nations CD instead, since he displaced both the CD boxes. I checked on internet and found out that the expansion also allows you to play as India. Age of Mythology would have been my technically first game, but instead Rise of Nations became my first game.
One month later, he indeed gave me the correct CDs of Age of Mythology and I had fun playing that game also

@@Zade_95 wow! Thank you for the reply! I will be waiting for your thoughts on Empire Earth.
And yeah, I think Commandos games is still worth looking today. It's a different kind of RTS that needs a different kind of thinking. Instead of controlling an army on a large scale, you control this squad of uuh.. well.. Commandos with different roles throughout WWII theatre. It requires deep thinking of tactics since you can't make silly mistakes and get one of the Commandos killed (which results in a mission failure). What fascinates me is that I think it was the only RTS series where we can move the characters around and get the camera inside the building and do stuffs in the building.
But in 2006, they took a different turn in the franchise and made the final Commandos game not as an RTS, but as an FPS. It still has the same formula where you can control different people with different roles in the same mission, only in FPS perspective. It's not a bad game, quite good in my eyes, but fans didn't really like the change in the direction.

Although I always played with the highest level of difficulty the AI just limited to create a lot of heavy infantry and light cavalry (light armored cars after the industrial age). I really liked the technology aspect of this RTS. It never gets stale. You unlock new units and features in each age, and I think there's like 8 different ages. Also, combat is more strategic, rather than micro / speed based. Choosing where and when to fight is more important than controlling your units individually, OR simply amassing a larger army. Both micro and macro are less important than overall strategy and tactics, which is very rare in an RTS. Obviously if both people are equally matched, then micro and macro can make a difference, but if someone doesn't make good decisions strategically or tactically, they will be crushed. For example, if someone rushes you without supply wagons, it is very easy to defend and then counter attack. If you attack a city and don't pay attention, you can be flanked or die from attrition. So on and so forth. Also, the conquer the world game play is super fun. It is the perfect fusion of strategy and tactics.

The creator of RoN also released a game on mobile devices called DomiNations in 2014 which was also of a high standard. Worth a look if you love RoN. The game style is different of course, but you can definitely tell it's cut from the same cloth. You start at medieval age and upgrade to modern buildings and units, with Wonders as well.

Yeah I've seen it, interesting idea, and maybe worth checking out if only because of the devs!
