Palm oil is one of Malaysia and Indonesia's biggest export. The west wants us to be more environmental friendly? We adopted RSPO, MSPO, ISPO etc. Would like to hear if there are any certified sustainability standards practised by soybean farmers? I believe there are none. Hence, we are definitely more eco-friendly

It is great to hear that WWF has taken steps to make Palm Oil more sustainable. As someone who is actively disregarding any item (usually only checked with groceries) that contain any sort of palm oil (kernel, modified etc) is there a way to tell which has undergone the RSPO certification?

Why are you disregarding any items with Palm Oil? Are you also disregarding items containing sunflower or soybean oil? Did you know that sunflower and soybean farms could potentially be worst for the environment than oil palm plantations? Let me explain this:
      1. First sunflower or soybean output per hectare is too small compared to oil palm - thus you need 10 times the land. So if you stop Oil Palm farmers from farming the crop and they switch to sunflower or soybean expect them to clear 10 times the land.
      2. Oil Palm produces two different types of oils offering different characteristics and taste - no sunflower or soybean can do that.
      3. Orangutans or wild animals would find oil palm plantations much habitable than an open sunflower or soybean farms.
      4. Sunflower or soybean will need crop rotation to continue to be productive yet palm tree can stay there for 30 years without needing rotation. At the time of rotation will it mean people stop using edible oils, No. What will happen is more land will be acquired for that.
      5. For Oil Palm the farm is cleared once but for soybean the farm is cleared every season/year meaning you have cases of land being bare every season (leading to evaporation of surface water 💧 and killing surface organisms by the sun) yet palm will protect the land underneath continuously keeping it wet. Remember when the sunflower is bare, our air is no longer being refreshed yet oil Palms will continuously refresh our air by taking carbon dioxide and releasing to us oxygen.
      6. Oil Palm plantation will power other industries e.g cosmetics, pharmaceutical, construction, livestock feeding, paper production, ink production for print industry, biodiesel, etc. Even though sunflower and soybean can also produce livestock feed, but oil palm produce 10 times the quantity because there are more than 3 byproducts that can be used to create animal feed i.e. the leaves/fronds, the press fibber, and the palm kernel cake.
      7. Oil Palm tree protect land from soil erosion which sunflower or soybean cant.
      8. Because palm is a tree and it conserve land underneath just like a forest would it contributes to formation of rain - oil palm plantation is a forest.
      9. Oil Palm can be intercropped with other crops like coffee, bananas, pensions, pineapples, cacao, etc thus improving further productivity of the land.
      10. Oil Palm trees can survive draught better than sunflower or soybean coz they can preserve water for long periods.
      11. Oil Palm will need less fertiliser than soybean and sunflower - the empty fruit bunches can be used to nourish the soil.
      12. Due to sheer size of the tree the amout of carbons they take in and oxygen released is bigger compared to sunflower or soybean which have smaller lead surface.

We need to start by first changing the narrative. Remove the negative narrative about palm oil and then address the environmental concerns. At the moment Palm Oil has been branded too negative and as such the efforts to try make it sustainable might fell into deaf ears because of people have switched ot thinking you are all negative about it. So first let's brand it correctly - that this is a great gift of nature which God gave us and that through great farming management practices it can do the world great good. Then move to educate people on this great farming management practices to make sure its impact is all positive. Remember, if people abandon palm oil they will go to other sources of oils instead of abandoning edible oils altogether. And we all know that the other sources are not as efficient as palm oil. In fact, the lost of all palm oil byproducts will be huge because these byproduct could help drive other industries e.g. livestock, construction, briquettes production, paper production, printing, etc. The amount of livestock feed palm tree can product per hectare will take sunflower 20 times of hectares to produce.

Now, ask yourself, if we stop palm oil altogether and farm the alternative edible oil crops like sunflower and soybean or rapeseed where will the land come from? We all know they all need more than 10 times of land to produce output similar to oil Palms. Why the attach on palm oil? I don't get it it! 😕

Because in reality is this is a political propaganda from Europe trying to stop palm oil because oil Palms don't grow in their climate. But in reality this is the most environmentally friendly edible oil plant the world has ever seen. For the same output other sources or edible oils need 10 times or more of land. Not only that, this is a tree and a typical plantation becomes a forest because the trees canopy cover the whole ground underneath. It helps in conserving land, reduce evaporation of surface water, help in the formation of rain, reduce green gas emissions and produce by products that power other industries such as printing (ink production), paper production, construction, livestock feeds, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, briquettes production, and more.

Other vegetable oil using land 4-10 times bigger then palm tree to produce the same quantity of oil. But why western countries does not ban these vegetable oil? Because these vegetable oil industries give western countries a profit advantage while palm oil doesn't. I will ask you which vegetable oil is environment friendly? So if you want to protect environment, start by not using the product from industries with the most worst for environment such as mining or if you talk about vegetable oil, start with other vegetable oil, and palm oil on the last because palm oil the most efficient to produce oil from using land.

@@millie7642 I disagree with you on this one. Reason being that Dhenis is challenging the WWF idea of sustainability which suggests that only of palm oil is produced sustainably our environmental issues will be sorted. What he is suggesting is that these standards or care of environement so to speak should be applied to all human activities thatead to deforestation instead of only targeting oil palm.

@@millie7642 Did you know that sunflower and soybean farms could potentially be worst for the environment than oil palm plantations?
      12. Due to sheer size of the tree the amout of carbons they take in and oxygen released is bigger compared to sunflower or soybean which have smaller leaf surface area.
