  • Bonne Terre means 'the good earth' in French, but it's what sits under the earth that draws visitors from all over the world to the little town south of St. Louis.

This mine is amazing! I can across it from Atlas Obscura looking for things to do in Missouri when I passed through. It's like a dream or fantasy movie setting. It's unbelievable that this huge cavern is below the streets of Bonne Terre, a fairly small, unassuming town. When I arrived, I drove right past it because I expected to see some kind of evidence from the outside, like a big mountain or something, silly me. The walking/boat tour is awesome even if you don't scuba dive, and I wish I did scuba dive, because this looks like an amazing place to dive.
