Massive Monsters

- So in this edit we feature my second home Nazare in Portugal. The home of the worlds largest ridable wave. Nazare is one of those places that you expect to see plenty of that kind of thing. 'Big Massive Monsters' as Pato Teixeira says.
This film is really a short documentary rather than a short clip.
I wanted to present a full wrap up of this historic day. Interviews before and after to really paint the story of how it was expected and and how it all went down.
On every big swell event there, if the storm is big enough and coming from the right direction and arrives with the right winds & weather there's a possible chance of riding the biggest wave ever ridden. Most of these surfing gladiators are after this moment.
A Guinness World Record is as good as World Title and to get it is for some is the pinnacle of the sport.
Since i recorded this vision a number of World Records have been suggested.
Nazare is really the ultimate test of man/women riding beast. It's the preparation, it's the timing, it's the team, it's the beat downs and with a bit of luck it's the adulation of riding the biggest wave of your life.
Leave a comment if can and let me know who you think rides the biggest wave.
This film shows this. Enjoy.. Спорт
The music in the middle of the video was perfect.
What it must have been like for the first people to discover these monster waves. Hell on earth that is also wrapped in beauty would have been my thought.
Beautiful music for this beautiful display of nature.
Lucas Chumbo is great riding waves and rescuing people.
What a complete athlete he is.
As a 20+ year editor and post production professional, I must say that this is perhaps the best piece on Nazaré that I've seen (HBO not withstanding). The editing combined with the water and drone shots are incredible! Bravo.
Go back to the 80s, no cameras but charges. Got on the internet
Lucas Fink. Total madman. On a skimboard? That is insane. I'm sure Its crazy just being out there on normal equipment made for this but to be out there on a skimboard is mental. The footage of Lucas at huge Puerto Escondido on a skimboard is just as crazy.
He has issues
Should be on prime time television.. Fantastic production.
*20 feet is already huge!!!*
*90+ FEET IS STUPID SICK!!!*
*THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!!!*
This is unbelievable...Fink was amazing, I mean just absurd skill n courage..mahalo fellas, stay stoked
Thank you! No words...
Iam not a surfer ... but what the hell is this movie... this is one of the most awesome movie I ever watched... really nice work....
Lucas Chumbo's ride at 18'35...waou !!!!!!!!
Yes, I spotted the same moment !
That was amazing what he did on the ride down!
I was there in Nazaré on february 25th. Was amazing and unforgetable see all this crazy guys
Mother nature is fantástic !!!
Goosebumps when they are holding hands before going into massive destruction... EPIC!
They are some of the craziest yet bravest folks alive! I've been picked up & pounded into the North Shore, Hawaii before & I swore I'd NEVER get back into that water again. I was just swimming with friends I was visiting & that was too much for me so these peeps have my FULL respect...sincerely!
Epic session from every single surfer in the water!
Thank god for these hero’s on the jets skies. The skill they use to maneuver in an out of 60 to 100ft waves to rescue these guys gasping for their last breath hoping that another salvo of waves doesn’t crash on their heads…so much respect has to be given to these people on the jet skies as well as the respect to the surfers who braces these wild waves. Should make a documentary on the ones doing the rescues and put cameras on them to see the pov of what they see.
That view and those waves are one of the best vantage point for big waves I'd ever seen, I'm an ocean person, brought up literally in and on the ocean my whole life, it's beautiful.
Massive waves, massive wipeouts and some of the best big wave surfing ever filmed! This video has it all!
At 18:50 it looked like he skipped down that wave in the air over 10 feet. That is insane. I had to slow it down half speed to see it. Incredible
I watch every nazare footage I possibly can and this edit was without a doubt the best I’ve ever seen. Was absolutely perfect.
Have to say Nic was bombing every ride. What a maniac
Even with those vests and the support crew, you literally have to be content with the real likelihood of dying in one of these monsters. Absolutely insane
18:50 insane jump, what a ride!
Looked a little mushy for my tastes personally. Haha, yeah right! These guys and gals are truly pushing limits. Nik Von Rupp had to be the day's MVP. Incredible cinematography. Congrats Tim, you are a beast. During times when there is so much wrong in the world, it's great to see humans inspiring themselves and others.
The jet bike cavalry is easily as fascinating as the surfers if not more. What ballsy bastards. They are the elder Fremen, stalking the waves, watchful and quick to respond in support of the surfers as they ride Shai Hulud. Fucking awesome film-making guys.
Absolutely outrageous! Incredible footage.
Music choice for this is perfect
Do you know the title of the music 🎶 🎵?
Stunning footage, got chills here
luv to talk geoengineering and surfing. aloha from maui , hawaii.
❤😁🇬🇧 beautiful filming. Better than usual surf vid music. Top job.
All I can say is wow, wow, and wow!!!!
One of the best.
Always a great edit, the music was on point. Congrats Tim,
like surfing on another planet
An amazing edit of unbelievably epic rides and wipeouts. Thank you for putting this together with such care. The music, interviews....if there's an award for surf videos, or just documentaries in general, this is a winner. So intense!!
100% 👍👍👍
Nick von Rupp kills it
Beautifully crafted long short! The surfers are all so humble! I can’t help but be awestruck by what humans can achieve and what nature can provide.
An epic wonder of the surfing world!
This what we love pure carnage!!
Thank's for this production!👍👍
That's insane!!
beau, puissant, magique
Sensational as always Tim. Great post session interviews as well mate. Nice hearing from the crews.
Gorgeous film, beautifully shot. TY!
thank you! this is by far the best vid I've ever seen on Nazare!
Wow! 🤩😍👍💪❤️❤️❤️
It made my day , it made my week , it made my year ! THANK YOU .
I’ve been binging on your films over last 24 hours and this is probably my favourite so far. Love the long short format, the buildup catches the nerves and excitement leading up to the big day, out of course the waves themselves and the awesome inspiring athleticism and skill of not only just the surfers but also the ski drivers. And then the after thoughts and reactions of the surfers and the acknowledgment of the teams involved. Many thanks for bringing this experience to the world.
Que pasada, gracias Tim.
Unbelievable. I have goose bumps, but it's really dangerous.
Best footage from start to finish👍
You guys are LEGENDS!!
I'm proud of all these guys who ride these monsters let's not forget the guys on the jettskies they save lives. God bless them all and keep them safe in the future!!!
I wish I was young again,I would be out there,I'm 68.i did ride p.r. in 1970 25 foot it was better then sex!!!
Thank God for the guys on the jetskies they save lives
Lucas fink, you’re an animal. Can’t believe how far you’ve come. Love you buddy.
Hope to see you soon. O+
18:18 Lucas Chumbo sempre audaz 😅
Agree with so many, this is such a well made ‘Long Short’! You tell the story beautifully. I would love to know the name of the music composer and the cuts. Your choices of where to allow silence or very minimal music is spot on! If anything were altered, I think it would have created more anticipation to begin with the shot that starts at 9:44-10:11 then cut to exactly where you began the film. You created a fabulous visual narrative and my “back seat driving” comes from deep appreciation of your skill! What a great surfing film! Congratulations.
Maybe Hans Zimmer with a touch of Lisa Gerard song wise.
superb. Hellmen at their best. The music at 29 minutes is awsome tooo!!!
vous etes formidables et que les vagues sont belles et impressionnantes .c juste fou
Kudos to the Water Patrol¡ Awesome Job¡👍👍
Nic Von Rupp ride at 30:29 and the wave at wave at 31:05 .. omg ... like a mountain crashing ... amazing footage amazing crew and surfing gods ...
In the early 1970s my friends and I would use my dads fizz boat to tow in. Difference was we would do it in 1 foot surf because it was too small to surf otherwise.
17:55 , most horrific sucked up and back over the falls I've ever seen.
One more thing, If I may be so bold in suggesting: A great piece of music for a massive wave collection is called DESTROYER (NOT The Destroyer, there are two vids) by WORLD BEYOND. All you need to do is ask if you may use it. At least, give it an ear and if you don't like it, no worries. I think you'll love it WHEN YOU HEAR THE BIG HORNS AND STRINGS. Powerful hybrid composition for action trailers featuring heavy guitars, hard lead, massive drums, strings, horns and movie-style percussion.
Beautiful
Magnifique et respect il en faut des. Couilles
This wave 17:46 is deathly terrifying. For him to pop up at the top of the falls like that....he must have gotten sucked up some 30ft in a matter of seconds and then taken a huge fall through low density white water.
Well done!!!!
18:45 Lucas ...bombing !!!
19:56 dude pops out the top holy sheet
Hammer Bilder! Respekt!
Wow!!!
Fantastic…
Props for tow-in crew 🙌🏼
Amazing guys
Fantástico!
So Sick....
Great video.
Jet skies 🏋️SAR swimmers! They swoop and swarm!!
Nazaré rules
This vid was pretty awesome, but It’s the sound of the Nazaré waves that has always impressed me the most. A thunder that can be heard miles away. Yet to see a video that gives us a true sense of that immense power and not use some silly sound track.
Maya blows my mind.
Hi guys awesome video please could you tell me in you tell me where I could find the awesome tune that you used at the 15:36 Mark thanks
Thank you Tim, great footage.
There were a few waves there that were pure evil.
Wtf was with that bloke on the skim board ?
He is a few Roo’s short in the top paddock.
I can speak Portugeese. The prayer at the start was "Dear God, Help us to paddle fast, And if we see a shark, Help us to paddle faster, Amen."
wow....that Lucas Chumbo ride at 18:30 was so scary and incredible and insane......and if he had wiped out on that wave, it could have absolutely been deadly!!
Malta cross in the boat
Hi, I was wondering what lens you're using? It's perfect for interviews and creates a lovely DOF. Thank you
17:24 is amazing
Wow really amazing. Can I ask if anyone surfing this why you don't get down more to go faster? There is so much wind resistance. Don't you want to get down the face faster than the whitewash? Best wishes and thanks for the vid.
See this. This is the surf video to see.
WTF WOW the guys are fearless
that pregame speech, on the ski's got me AMPED!
Epic! 👍
Great video! added drama with the music but gos well! congrats
These waves are terrifying lol
Show Gostei 🏴☠️🔱🏴☠️🌊🏄♂️
.
Lucas Chumbo is elite
18:46 Unintentional 20' air on the drop..stomped it.
At first I assumed the canisters were for a breathing apparatus but come to find out assisted breathing is the furthest thing from these guys minds. That is a shocker. In the James Bond movie To Live and Let Die James had a breathing device which he held in his mouth that supplied around four minutes of oxygen. That device should be mandatory amongst surfers especially at swells like Nazaré. The inflatable vest is cool but that definitely leads to extra pounding on the head when it’s best to dive under waves approaching while bobbing in the water. To ask the surfers to be able to hold their breath for several wave hold downs is too much. With all the fancy equipment they have it surprises me to see no one is thinking about being able to have breath under water in a light weight device the size of those inflating canisters.
What could be the biggest wave ever photographed at Nazare? I know it's difficult to estimate but would be nice to know how big bombs people have witnessed throughout the years.
25 to 30m. Official record Rodrigo Koxa, on November 8th, 2017 with 24,38m, but the NASA published pics of October 29, 2020 when António Laureano would have surfed a wave of about 30.9 m.
What is the song name or band that starts at 15:40? Shazam doesnt' know. Great video though!
No Idea, I also wish I knew
Someone has to say this. Even though this place is massive it just looks like shoulder burners. Teahupo'o
At half the size is still twice as gnarly.
Tell me otherwise if I'm wrong. Or Is it just the poor ability for anyone to get the footage here?
Sorry for the long response, just having some fun here...:
Definitely not saying your wrong, my opinion comes from the perspective that comparing places like jaws and Mavericks, or Teahupo'o and Nazare, isn't doing either place any justice. When I watch them surf Nazare, I'm not expecting to see barrels, but I am expecting to see waves that are never the same, frighteningly powerful, and an outside chance that some monstrous creature living at 30,000 feet deep surfaces, rides a wave, and then takes biggest wave of the year award, while never breaking eye contact with Chumbo.
Also, if I'm watching teahupo'o I'm on the edge of my seat in wait for the moment when that watcher starts screaming and ruining everyone's day, including the waves. Sound really travels in the water.....
Different waves completely! Both are awesome in their own right, but just getting down the face and escaping that white water is part of the skill. Teahapoo you can get tubed, but if you get to deep your going through the grinder. I’d personally rather take on a wave like Nazare, Mavs, Cabins, Cortes than a shallow reef like Teahapoo or pipe.
I think the guys that drive to the base of the wave and then do huge bottom turns when it has drawn to its full height just before it implodes are insane. The other guys who shoot straight to the shoulder aren't riding nazare as it is meant to be. In saying that they are all elite and crazy.
Someone always say it 😂
Shipsterns is the one that looks terrifying to me! The waves coming out of waves and just the heaviness....
