Is this video a sign? I have been trying to force myself to make homemade nut/oat milks for months and can NEVER get round doing so! Also, would you believe if I told you a girl from a different city in my country(Poland), who has recently opened a zw shop and visited the one I work in...asked me if I know and watch you? :D Your community is expanding and I LOVE it! You are just the best - your attitude truly speaks to me and I am sure it inspires many more people as well!
Great tip about the ice water for the oat milk. Worked great! Cashew milk can go quicker if you're in a hurry. Grind it dry into a powder first in a bullet or spice grinder and then add water and blend again. If you have some time you can let it sit for a bit and blend again. If it is powdered well, you don't even have to strain it but you can.
I add Sunflower Lecithin to my plant milks when making them to stop them separating. I use 1TB per litre of water added. I highly recommend, it's very worth it!!
Thank you for mentioning that a sieve works as well, cause I was about to purchase a special strainer for making oat milk, but now I realise that's unnecessary! :)
Do you have a way to make it last longer? I want to start making my own, but I'm concerned about how long it lasts and I don't have much flexibility during the week to make more.
Thanks thanks thanks thanks thanks!! My oat milk was always getting slimy and no one was able to tell my why so far. You are my hero! Now I can finally ditch tetra packs!
I have an oat milk recipe that works very well, but is so long and complicated that I rarely use it. Yours is so amazingly simple - I can't wait to try it!
quaratine made me starting doing my own soy milk, but sunflower seed milk is my other way to go if I don't have too much time :) Its veery nice in coffee and much better environmental then cashew or other nuts.
Thanks. I will try down the line. Locally by me, I see sunflowers growing in slivers of front and side yard. I don't know other nuts/seeds are locally grown.
Just made a bunch of veggie broth yesterday and will be making noodles for some noodle bowls soon! I usually make oat milk since it’s the cheapest and apparently requires the least amount of water to grow. I used RainbowPlantLife’s pantry pasta recipe with homemade oat milk about a week ago and really liked it. Btw for me, oat milk last 3 days and on the 4th day it smells terrible as a heads up to anyone else. I wish it did last longer for me though.
You explained this in such an easy way - it was the first time I watched a plant milk how to and immediately got off the couch to make my own 😂 will keep trying it! Thank you for keeping it simple and fun!
I found it helpful to rinse the bottles or jars with boiling water just before filling them with my milk! I think this kills bacteria and additional a little piece of salt is good in terms of durability :)
I tried making my own plant milk for the first time a few months ago! It works great :) I use oats, some agave nectar, a pinch of salt and some nut butter (almond, cashew, tahini etc). I loooove it!
Tasty food, easy recipes, amazing energy, and friendly charm. I really enjoy your channel, thanks for all that you put into your work. It really shows how much you care!!
I have started making my own tiger nut milk. It is an expensive milk and still fairly, pricey to make at home as the nuts are not cheap. I make a litre a week because it is just the best thing ever in coffee. For breakfast and smoothies cheaper oat milk is fine. By the way tiger nuts are not really nuts at all but tubers.
The new concept for recipe video is great, I love when you share your recipes! Keep doing your best I might sound an annoying italian now, and I apologise for that, but the pasta that you cook seems more of a "cacio e pepe" (meaning cheese and pepper). Carbonara is made with eggs and bacon.
Anyways, sending you all the best wishes for the next week! I hope you will have some nice time with your friends or doing something you love! Stay safe and sound!
It is completely nuts to me that only certain country can and do actually recycle tetrapak. I'm from Italy where it is possibile and I literally thought this was the case everywhere.. definitely makes you think about how many other countries end up just throwing stuff away without even trying :( I'm at the very beginning of my low waste journey, but the more I know the more it feels like a duty to educate myself even more and try to educate others aswell. Thank you for being an inspiration Gittemary!
Your energy is shining so bright, you spread so much knowledge and mindfulness! I deeply appreciate your work!💚 Recently I've been wanting to buy new earphones & I'm trying to find a sustainable company in Europe to buy from, but now I'm very lost because I can't find any. What do you recommend? If you can make a video about sustainable electronics it would be grate! Sending love&light your way🌻💜
I will have to test the cashew carbonara on my fam :D They are SO resistant to trying pasta sauces with no cream I have to try open them up to new flavours- and this recipe seems great for that!
OAT MILK: 1. It's my mum's favourite. 2. Oats are cheap 3. It takes literally no time to make. What the heck was I waiting for to try it?! Making it tomorrow! However, my mum does mind lumps and prefers a creamer milk. Any tips? Less water (2,5 parts for example)- okay. But how about using something else than a strainer? Some people use nut milk bags, other use t-shirts and I have no idea if it is a good way to make it(doesn't it become slimier then?) All the recommendations welcome!
I love making haselnut milk, it tastes like chocolate :) cashew and oat milk is nice, too. The nut pulp I like to eat in my porridge. I make my own broth as well by freezing the veggie peel and remains first. I made soy milk quite often in the past weeks, its quite easy and keeps longer in the fridge. Though I then developed skin issues and thought the soy milk might cause that because it's not as diluted as the store bought and I stopped doing it. Unfortunately the soy milk wasn't the problem, still unsure about the cause for the breakout. Ps: you have a lovely physique :)
Did you ever tried to make your own soy milk? I like to use milk from soy or peas to have some extra proteins, but read it's quite hard to have a tasty result, so I never tried.
Hi Gittermary, , nice video! Do you know if oat "milk" can be made with oat flour instead of oat flakes? Mixing the flour with water directly? Have you tried? When I make oat porridge I always add a little oat flour to the oat flakes in the bowl as it seems to make the porridge more creamy,. But I haven't dared using just oat flour to make "milk", for fear of wasting it if it doesn't work.
The short answer: plantmilks hold up and can provide you with the same nutrients as cows milk, and while cows milk also come with nutrients it also comes with bovine growth hormones, cholesterol, anitobiotics etc. If you search for plantmilk vs cows milk on google images, you´ll see several comparisons showing the benefits 😊🌿🙌
I love cheesy foods and would love to try the vegan alternatives but they always seem to use cashews and I'm allergic. :( Also, what is the purpose of the nutritional yeast? I haven't been able to find it at the store. Can you just leave it out or is there a good alternative?
Nutritional yeast (aka "nooch) has a cheesy, nutty flavour. It's not essential, but it adds a bit more depth to the taste. I've been able to find it in most health food shops :-)
I just had one doubt- do you take any supplements because it's been weeks I've been contemplating to go vegan because I really want to, but I really want to be sure as to if I should consult a nutritionist first, but then again, consulting one is expensive so I wanted to know if you do take any, then I can go consult a professional about the dosage, once I'm confirm that I want that lifestyle.
Hey I know I’m not her but hopefully I can help! I know I and many vegans just take a vegan multi. Like the deva one. The most important thing you always have to supplement on a vegan diet is b12. So a multi will usually have that in it. Just check. And then of course eat a well balanced diet to accompany the multi vitamin and you’ll likely be good. I also like to eat fortified milks with calcium because I don’t eat as many calcium rich greens as I should but they may not be an issue for you.
I think I had a similar experience when researching that some recipes make DIY plant milks look difficult. The oat milk looks so easy and quick and so much cheaper than Oatly (which I do love but at £2 a carton I think my wallet will thank you!)
I always have the problem, that when i put the perfectly nice selfmade oatmilk in my (of course) warm coffee that it starts to get slimy. Any tips for that? That's basically the only reason why i still buy it in tetrapacks because it's not getting slimy in my coffee. :(
a lausan that is because the oat milk is warm up by the coffee, I would recommend another kind of plant milk for warm drinks 😊🌿 The reason why store bought ones doesn’t is because they are treated and processed with stabilisers etc to avoid it ✌🏼
@@Gittemary thanks for your answer! yes that's what i thought. it feels like a dilemma, because oats are the most regional option for me (germany) and all the oat-tetrapak options are actually made in germany...
@@Gittemary If anyone is still wondering about hot coffee and milk: i googled a lot and "experimented" and found out if you put 1 teaspoon of lecithin (in germany available at dm) in your selfmade oatmilk overnight it will not get slimy or start to crumble in the hot coffee! very happy
Remember when you buy or make plant based milk. That unless its added, they do not contain vitamin D , iodide, several other minerals White liquid is not the same as milk. Especially young woman in fertile age need iodide. And cow milk is one of very few god iodine sources, seafood is also a good source. Remember that nut/ plant "milk" is not bad for you but by avoiding milk and or seafood . You risk not getting sufficient amounts of certain minerals such as iodine.
avada85 you can easily get your required amounts of iodine while also making nut milk yourself. There are other sources, for instance sea weed, strawberries and other greens, and you can also get it from whole grains and several cereals.
Hi Gittemary, I was wondering if you have investigated the cashew industry? I believe that the processing of these nuts is quite toxic and the workers suffer from burns and other injuries. (I know yours were dumpster dived but every vegan in the universe seems to use a lot of cashews). I'd love to hear what you think.
Damn I didn't know. I just started getting interested in more blantbased recipes and therefore bought some cashews. Thanks for the info, not going to do that again. :)
My dad picked up a few cashews from a tree that grew nearby. I was shocked at the amount of smoke that was liberated from the roasting. Omg I couldn't go anywhere near it. I wonder how much smoke this cashew processing industries alone would emit. I'm skeptical about the carbon footprint of cashew nuts and I don't think vegans must gorge on them. I'm vegetarian and I'm planning to move to a vegan diet. This cashew thing just bummed me.

I make oat milk a couple times a week. As a Canadian- I sweeten it with maple syrup 😉. If you froth the oat milk up...yummy lattes!!
