A Plane Lost One Wing So a Pilot Decided to Do This

  • It was a regular training day for the Israeli Air Force. Several combat jets were up in the air, simulating an aerial fight. One of those jets was an F-15 Eagle that already had some history and even got a nickname - Markia Schakim, which means “Sky Blazer” in Hebrew.
Piloting the jet was a new member of the Air Force, Zivi Nedivi, and behind him sat his instructor and navigator, Yehoar Gal, an experienced pilot himself. The training exercise they were performing wasn’t anything out of the ordinary drill: two F-15s were to get away from four A-4 Skyhawks in the open sky over the desert. If everything went according to plan and instructions, no danger would come to any pilots or aircraft. At least that’s what everyone believed...

    SUMMARY:
    - Nedivi, being a member of the outnumbered team, wove through the skies, dodging enemy attacks and looking out for an opening to issue his own. It was an impressive sight, and the young pilot was doing spectacularly well.
    - One of the Skyhawk pilots saw an opportunity to attack an Eagle with a missile and tried to zero in on his target. What he didn’t see was that the other F-15, piloted by Nedivi, was right above him.
    - At this point, both the pilot and his instructor should have ejected, leaving the aircraft to fall but saving their lives. Neither did, though.
    - The jet had lost control and was going down at a 30-degree angle to the ground, making crazy twists and spirals.
    - The pilot and his instructor had very bad visuals and, looking around them, they couldn’t see that their right wing was torn at the root.
    - Nedivi really managed to get the controls back and leveled the jet. It was now time to wholly evaluate the situation and the condition of the Eagle.
    - As he approached the airfield, Nedivi requested the ground crew to deploy the safety net and catch the F-15 if necessary.
    - The eyewitnesses say they didn’t believe what they were seeing: a one-winged fighter Eagle was speeding like a bullet along the landing strip, its tail hook torn out by the sheer force of the tug… and then it miraculously stopped just 35 ft before the safety net.
    - Its fuselage, the remaining wing, and the stabilizers at the rear helped the Eagle generate lift and stay under control.
    - The amazing Eagle was fully repaired afterwards and served in the Air Force for several more years.
    - As for the pilot, Zivi Nadivi, he remained in the Air Force too, of course. And his story after the incident is a bit amusing: first, he was demoted for disobeying orders from his instructor; and then he was immediately promoted for landing the aircraft and thus saving it.

The other major factor in the airplane's survival was the F-15's computerized flight control and stability augmentation system. With unequal lift on both sides changing an aircraft's pitch will cause it to roll. This is called pitch/roll coupling. The Eagle's flight control system was able to damp out this tendency by deflecting the aileron upward on the remaining left wing. This allowed the pilot to adjust the pitch to control the overall lift without the aircraft going into a roll. Actually all the lift was being provided just by the fuselage alone, hence the high landing speed. The remaining left wing was not producing any lift at all because the flight control system had the left aileron deflected almost all the way up and it was continually adjusting the aileron automatically to keep the airplane level and stable in the roll axis.

    • @joevignolor4u949
      @joevignolor4u949 5 лет назад +3

@@ohwhatelse I was in the Air Force doing avionics maintenance. I worked on A-10's, which do have a basic stability augmentation system to hold the nose down when the gun is being fired. It uses gyros and accelerometers to pulse the elevator down each time the gun fires a projectile to keep the gun on target. I also learned a lot about how aircraft like the F-15 and F-16 have unstable aerodynamic characteristics for high maneuverability, which makes electronic stability augmentation necessary to control an inherently unstable airplane.
I was also an avid RC model builder and flyer for a while and learned a lot about basic aerodynamics from doing that. You learn a lot about how dihedral and changing the center of gravity affect an airplane's stability and maneuverability.
Interestingly this is how I learned about pitch/roll coupling. I once clipped a tree with an RC model I was flying and took about 3 inches off the end of one of the wings. I immediately noticed that when I adjusted the pitch with the elevator that the airplane would start to roll. I was able to land the plane by quickly learning how to make coordinated aileron adjustments whenever I changed pitch, similar to what the F-15's flight control system had done.
Professionally I was an electronic engineer and I did a lot of automation control system design work, which involves a lot of similar technology as is used in aviation.
I have to admit that I learned the specifics of how the F-15's flight control system and computerized stability augmentation system saved the F-15 from reading a detailed technical article about the incident in an aviation magazine.

Also, the F-15 is an Air Force fighter, designed with Air Force Fighter Landing Gear (not as much suspension as a Navy jet) and most definitely without a tail hook. The only other jet I know of that could do the same was the F14. It has a very similar design and it's body creates almost 30% of the total lift. F14's have been known to get a wing stuck in swept back position while the other wing can move freely. Same situation, the plane becomes unstable at slow speeds but can fly with the wings swept or at higher speeds.

It doesn’t work that way with airliners. However, I have a theory that a pilot may be able to regain control of a jetliner after a wing loss using the flight spoiler on the remaining wing. I think so because the flight spoiler reduces lift, which is why they are extended after touchdown when landing, and if a wing becomes detached then the lift is only being produced on one side.

The f-15 has an amazing shape which allows it to fly without a wing up to an extent. The shape of the f-15 is rocket like without the wings which was why it was able to regain control with only one wing. Although it is possible as proven here the skill needed to fly the aircraft with just one wing is immense and shows off his skills as a pilot. I wonder what it was like.
