I just discovered your channel! I lived in Silver City when I was a young child. I lived there from 1947 to 1957. Then my family moved back home to the southern part of US. I remember every weekend Dad would take us out driving around. One weekend we visited the “City of Rocks”. I have pictures of Dad standing up in one of the big rocks. Another weekend we drove to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Another weekend we drove over to Elephant Butt. We visited someplace every weekend. These memories are so precious to me. I’m 82 years old now. Oh, when we were first driving to New Mexico in 1947 as we were moving there we drove near White Sands. We were driving near dusk dark near Roswell and the road was blocked by the Police! We set in the car for about three hours before we were allowed to journey onward. While we were setting in car we saw something shot up in the air in the distance! My Dad thought it was something from the vessels shot up in the air. But later we learned there was supposedly an air balloon with a disc that had crashed. But reports were kept hush hushed! I’m sure you can do research and read about that incident! So exciting to know we were that close by that ”history”;was being made in that area. Oh, how I’d love to visit New Mexico again. But I’ll just enjoy your videos. I’m saving them everyone in my library on my iPad so I can watch them over and over! Keep on doing your wonderful job! I will be following you! God Bless!
That was good 👍🏻 I grew in Silver City and the Gila . Well done capturing some of it. Funny Thing about the book by Phillip, I have an autographed copy. He lived across the street from my dad 😁 Great channel
👋 Hi from southern New Mexico🌶️🌵..I grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. We moved off the farm and moved to Madison in the latter 60's. I came West here in 79-80 and in my 70's now. I love the wide open places. We actually came out pulling a small trailer with an chopper bike built with the tool boxes on it. We had a pup tent and we took the road bike for road trips and even did some off road on that bike.lol ...later we got a 70"s used Ford Econo. That the telephone company used. It had heavy duty suspension which we wanted and we cut out the top and built a top so we could stand up. It was awesome and I haven't seen a build like it since. Just wish it had a granny gear in it. Of course we took it over roads that was rated 4 wheel drive. Went up thru Mugollion( when it was gravel) up past Snow Lake on 78 missed the turn and was on a cow path reminded me of what Ireland would look like...There was a herd of some animal that was imported but not an Ibex, rump like an antelope and the horns twirls straight up beautiful animals. We had to turn back to get 78 and we ended up coming out by Truth or Consequences, NM. Thank goodness when we got on pavement we were high up in the mountains and you could see mountain range after mountain range after mountain range and the thunderstorms coming in and did it rain. So if you get back here there is so much to explore. Box canyon. Going up Turkey Creek to the hot springs. City of Rocks and the hot springs next to it. You missed the Hot springs by the Cliff Dwellings( several) Lake Roberts up there and Bill Evans lake by Cliff and Gila and the bird sanctuary. In case you want to get back. From a new subscriber here. Thanks
These be my stomping grounds. I live in the Mimbres valley with the river in front of me and the Gila National Forest behind me. Such a fantastic area. With some more hidden gems too. 🤫
I was born and raised in Silver City and the Gila Wilderness was our playground. I've hiked the peak of Mogollon Baldy, where there is a fire watchtower that was probably in the book that you mentioned, then down the east slope where the ferns are 8-10 ft tall and grow as thick as grass, then sat on the south facing clifs and watched the evening thunder storms as they moved across the range. It is magical! That was 40+ years ago and one of my fondest memories of growing up. Thank you for paying homage to such an amazing part of the country.
Great share, IWR! Much appreciated. I think a great deal of that region has been burning as of late, unfortunately. Not sure exactly what region. It is a truly magical region and I can see why Aldo felt compelled to protect it as it should be.
@@4XPEDITION My family, sometimes joined by the Boyscouts, made it a yearly tradition to float the Gila River starting at the confluence of the East and West forks of the river right underneath the bridge of the highway just before you get to the Clif Dwellings. We would float it all the way to Turkey Creek which is just up the river from where you stayed in Gila. There was also a big fire a couple of years ago that really tore through the Wildnerness. I've spent a couple of summers planting trees for the Forest Service way up in the back country. Places where rarely, if ever, a human has set foot.
Thanks for sharing your story growing up. Did you see the Gila trout. Amazing country. I hope it can survive the droughts and changes. Too bad Aldo wasn’t able to instigate a better fire management policy. But I suppose the science wasn’t as clear then as it is now. We are thinking of retiring near Silver City this year.
@@paulbaker3144 Yes. My family used to float down the Gila river every Spring, and fishing for trout was always the highlight of our day. The river rarely has enough water to float down nowadays, but it's absolutely amazing because it flows right through the heart of the Gila Wilderness. I love Silver City for its climate and access to the outdoors, and it is so beautiful in that part of the country. The politics in NM and Grant County no longer suit me, so I don't see myself ever moving back, at least for the time being and definitely not before I retire.

So happy to see this new video, Scott. @@sarahpearson4838 I will say that I have backpacked the Eastern Sierras on JMT through Ansel Adams Wilderness from Mammoth. That was stunning. Climbed Mt. Ritter along the way.
One time I lived in Silver and also for a while in Gila. During those years I made many trips to the Mogollon Mts and Black Range. In Gila I lived on Hooker Loop ...I knew of the "Dude Ranch" (this was in 1996.) The Catwalk near Glenwood NM was a favorite spot...I especially enjoyed it in the fall, late fall in the "off season." Many times I was the only hiker there. I remember the sound of the water and the scent of that canyon. As I recall an early mining operation used the water to generate electricity for the mining operation. The workers built a "catwalk" to build and maintain the pipeline they used. Of course now the State of NM has built the beautiful, sturdy strong walkway that is there today..(has to be built so that it can withstand any floods that might come thru that canyon ..and there have been many!) I also used to enjoy trips into the Gila (Mogollon Mts) up to the Crest Trail and also Snow Lake. Sadly a serious wild fire in 2012 spread thru these mountains and changed many of the sweet places I enjoyed. Hummingbird Saddle was one of those areas on the Crest Trail that was changed forever.....I haven't been back since the late 1990's. I have seen photos of the land after the fire. I hope there's still many places to enjoy there regardless. Thank you for your beautiful video of all the places you have explored there.
Loved this video. My wife and I were in that area this past December in Mogollon and camped in the cosmic campground. We also checked out the catwalks too, as it snowed on us. Such a beautiful place. We love your videos and look forward to more.
About the vehicles. I’m aiming it to be more about the experience and less about the vehicle because it’s all about the vehicle now. Building out a 2002 ex police water rescue vehicle Sprinter T1N 4x4. Enjoying your videos. Thanks

She gets mad when I make a quick run to the local Wal-Mart. I guess I'm going to have to head there a day or 2 before she's actually excepting us so we can adventure around. There are some great places I want to see around there. Another great video by the way.
Fantastic cinematography and a really touching personal story on this one Scott. The mood and the music in the beginning of the video really set the tone for the story around the half hour mark.
Scott this may be one of the first of your videos I’d ever watched. I’m back reviewing it as a friend of mine mentioned wanting to visit the “Cat Walks” yesterday. I remembered your video of the area and wanted to share it with him… I’m surprised I’d not commented then, I’ll do it now for sure… My wife and I had planned a visit to the Cat Walks but didn’t have the time. Now that we’re living in LC we’re closer and will have to do so.
I dont remember if i mentioned it to you in the past, but there is a very pleasant book I think you’d really enjoy about the area called “Fire Season” by Philip Connors. It is basically like a memoir of a man who works on a fire watch tower in the wilderness…..Just a nice read especially if you are sitting out in the wilderness just enjoying the beauty…….Talk soon , My Friend
Scott- Great information on Aldo Leopold, but I’d submit John Muir was doing much of the same ~30 years early albeit in California. From WIKIPEDIA: John Muir also known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks", was an influential Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States of America. He was also a founding member and first president of the Sierra Club.
There are some very nice cabins in Pinos Altos just 5-6 miles North of Silver City. Pinos Altos is 8K feet which is a much higher altitude of Silver City.
Good video. I’m agree with you on looking for land up north. Best of luck. I like exploring WY and MT as much as I can in the summer. Do you plan on staying up there all year? I love AZ in the winter.
Thought those masks were mugs. I like both designs. They actually look Native American. I would suggest you use those designs for mugs. Just saying. Really enjoyed your video.
I follow because of your content,to listen to to you.the rest is just bling.sounds like an interesting new way to travel but I prefer less is more, why not just get a 4x4van?
You put so much time and attention into making your videos. I'm smitten and subscribed. Just found you today, I think. Maybe last night. I can't remember cause I didn't sleep at all ! But I love how you use so many camera angles and I appreciate the time that takes. I'm also impressed that you are never out of breath when walking, talking and filming. Are you a runner or something? I'm in NM too so I really am enjoying learning so much more about the state. I've been out here about 4 years now but I regret to say I haven't gone out and explored places like the Cliff Dwellings or the Catwalk. Always wanted to check out Silver City and now I feel like I have, in a secondhand way. Thanks so much for such quality films. I will share your videos and hopefully you will get many more subscribers. Hard to believe you have so few. Hope you're enjoying your cabin up in Angel Fire. ~ Cheryl
It sucks you had to get rid of the camper, but oh well, that's life sometimes. It's cool you got a Class B to replace it. Perhaps it would be easier though, if instead of towing that truck, you towed or stacked a sportsbike, so you could still have the basecamp, and go out and explore, and be 100% sure you wont have to worry about any weight limits or have any problem fitting on roads or in camp spots. You could likewise bring along a cot tent or something similar on the bike and do a few nights on the bike in that. It would probably be a lot cheaper to set up too.
Over the many years, they've rebuilt a number of times after flash floods destroyed the catwalks. They rebuild them stronger and better each time. The current version is substantially stronger that what has ever been there before. I agree, it's nice to see they keep it up.
Seems it's a video about what you're doing, not the places. Watching you eat, sleep and drive....no thanks. Beautiful places but it takes too long to get there. This is a story of you.
I guess my suggestion then is to go watch something else. I'm pretty sure there are hundreds of other videos that offer what you are looking for. Cheers!

Great information on Aldo Leopold, but I’d submit John Muir was doing much of the same ~30 years early albeit in California.
Yep. All true. I followed John Muir's first ascent route up Mt. Ritter in the Eastern Sierras several years back.
No not necessarily. I will always spend most of my winters in the southwest however having the option to spend time in the snow is ideal. Thanks!
@@4XPEDITION Agree.
Thought those masks were mugs. I like both designs. They actually look Native American. I would suggest you use those designs for mugs. Just saying. Really enjoyed your video.
Great idea!
At 7:41, what gravel rd was that? Town? Was out there last yr, going back. Any directions that you could offer would help. Thanks.
That road is called Hookers Loop and leaves from the town of Gila.
@@4XPEDITION Thank you.
I follow because of your content,to listen to to you.the rest is just bling.sounds like an interesting new way to travel but I prefer less is more, why not just get a 4x4van?
I may do something like that in the next year or two.

Thank you for all the comments, Bea! Glad the vidoes resonate with you. ;-)
We're you planning to sleep on the floor? Or is the heated floor the only heat?
No. I wasn't and yes, the radient floor heat is all that particular cabin has but once it stoked up the cabin was warm.
Nice 👍🏽 video 🌲⛰ bro ✌🏽1
Thanks for watching Raulito!
So, my plan had been to bring both. Ha! I have a KTM 390 Adventure I’ll be bringing. But we’ll see how things pan out.
Surprised to see such expensive Walkways in such an Obscure area.🤔
I absolutely agree with that statement. It’s pretty surprising really.
Over the many years, they've rebuilt a number of times after flash floods destroyed the catwalks. They rebuild them stronger and better each time. The current version is substantially stronger that what has ever been there before. I agree, it's nice to see they keep it up.
Dont stay at the Motel 6 in Silver. Youll catch some bad in there
Did that in Denver... ugh.
Wow you eat chicken with a knife and fork never seen that before
Ha!
Know a family living in Tao New Mexico buy their products they Make
Ok.
Why are you whispering? Lol. If you just film the sunset without constant narration, you could have had the silent evening effect.
There's always something someone says could be different...but in the end, I created the video the way I liked it. Thanks for watching!
@@4XPEDITION I appreciate your content, and find your narration very peaceful.
Cheers!
