You Really Should Play Elex

- A small spiel in favor of Piranha Bites' polarizing 2017 Open World RPG, Elex.
Note: I kept this mostly early-ish game footage to avoid spoilers for those who want to play the game. I know some of it is repeating. I simply didn't have a large pool to choose from. I reloaded an old save to make this and recorded maybe two hours of footage.
ALSO, I realize I called the Outlaws 'Bandits' in this video. I'm sorry to any Outlaw stans out there.

Recently started playing this since it caught my eye on PS+. Never played Gothic or Risen before, but decided to take a chance on it after watching a few reviews. 25 hours in, and I’m obsessed. Haven’t been this invested in an RPG since the first time I played Skyrim a decade ago. It’s rough around the edges and often frustrating, but truly an amazing journey. Great video
Glad you liked it! And yes, Risen has a magic to it that’s hard to define (as seen here haha).
Started this game two days ago and i love it!! Cant wait to finish it and play the second One
Enjoy it!
2nd part is pure garbage
@@pepehabichuela1004 it's not a straight up improvement, but I wouldn't call it gargabe. the story is definitely hot garbage though :D
@@pepehabichuela1004 Wrong....Fake news
I started this game and I'm two hours in. I can say that I see myself doing over 100+ hours in this game easily. Game is amazing! Nice video too!
It’s fantastic. It’s a shame people can’t overlook the jank to see the gem
One of the best rpgs ever the only rpg that made you fear for your life and actually feel like your character progresses and became steonger
In Elex each faction is more suited to a certain playstyle. In my playthroughs and experience playing this game .
Berserkers - Mage Playstyle (Fire and Poison are good. Ice is mediocre.)
Outlaws - Best suited for Melee playstyle (Tough guy, Pick Me up and Mind Changer Chem are OP)
Clerica - Best suited for Range playstyle (One Man Army, One with weapon and Psi Hologram ability are good for a range build).
As for your video, good work sir and you earned my respect and sub for taking the time to play and review this hidden gem.
I hope I did the review some justice. It’s not my forte at all but every once in a while I get the urge to try. I went Clerics because of the insane magic but it did feel like by later game that the magic lost most of its luster and I was just using ranged.
Finished the game once, got every faction to the last rank (Regent, etc) and start now 1-2 years later my fourth Playthrough (:
And with Pirhanna Bytes potentially going under we have to appreciate it even more now. Enjoy your run!
@@Soul_Tomato Yeah, i Hope we‘ll still get elex 3
once i started playing this i didnt want to stop , the guns were fun while the melee combat was just ok not great not terrible , i also liked the atmosphere in the last few areas up where all the albs live , the overall artstyle was nice to look at especialy the clerics red and black uniforms , the only real issue i had was enemies that used crap like grenade launchers that essentialy stunlock you into oblivion
Review - pretty damn solid.
Albeit the early game struggle, I learned to compensate utilizing some old school fundamentals that will surely help new players: 1. scum save often, 2. learn to jet pack to a nice camping spot inaccessible from the ground and chip damage with the bow, 3. buy arrows often (like everytime you're near a trader); 4. cook and keep all meat products (you will have more cooked meat than health potions for a long time). Be patient, have fun and when possible, try to be observant. Also, agro tough enemies and lure then into friendly NPC character mobs when possible - essential NPCs are best as they cannot be killed in most, if not all, circumstances - they only get "knocked out" when downed.
Good video and the commentary was quite enjoyable.
Glad you liked it, and some good tips for would be players to boot!

In Elex 2, you learn it totally was technology that caused the meteor to hit Magalan.
Oh, okay. I have yet to play the second one but good to know.
Yeah, technology and an ahole with an overinflated ego. I'm waiting for Elex 3.
Ah Piranha Bytes, making the same janky, frustrating and ball smashing experience since 2001. And I wouldn’t have these games any other way, they’ll be sorely missed.
Dude the news they’re probably going under does hurt a lot. Gothic 2 got me through my childhood.
@@Soul_Tomato
Played the first 2 games early this year, it was terrible I loved every moment of it. Loved them so much I checked out the fan mod Chronicles of Myrtana : Archolos, and now I have more hours in that than the first 2 games combined.
Archolos is like if you made Gothic 2 actually a good to play game (it’s a good game but jank as sin). It’s also ENORMOUS. I couldn’t finish it because I had things going on but I think I put like 75 hours into it.
Good video. Don’t worry about your editing. Content is good. Subscribed and take care✌🏻
Hey appreciate it. But this one is pretty old. I’d assume (hope) I’ve improved since.
Enablers let pb to survive for long but they didn’t let them to evolve to actually succeed
Loved the world in Elex, I was wondering how you get the textures to look so crisp? (especially noticable when you talk to npcs in this video) Is it just the resolution scaling option?
Probably just the resolution. I didn’t use any mods or anything for the video
@@Soul_Tomato alright, i guess i never knew it could look this crisp, my pc just barely runs this game smooth, but that didn't stop me enjoying this game to its fullest 😁
I feel like something like elex and other games you aren’t feeling like doing full edited playthroughs of would be good as livestreams into VODs on the channel.
Less backend work than the edited videos and but you can kinda chill and play stuff were gunna play anyway, hang with the community, and as you play have clips to pull from for actual RUclips videos like this later on.
Not a bad idea
This gameplay gives off Knights of the old republic vibes. I like it and well definitely give it a go thx to the video.👍
Def worth it imo
the clerics got to you, didnt they?
😬
Ahhh a fellow cleric! good work on the video brother!
Thank you fellow Cleric brother
Ill take a janky AA game over any overproduced, soulless AAA day one patched games as a service crap.
Agreed
Elex 1 is the bomb. XD
The game is janky, the combat system is challenging, the difficulty, especially the first few hours, is brutal. However, the worldbuilding and exploring is exceptional and I so happen to like the main character and the companions, even though companion AI is absolute crap. I haven't had this much fun exploring a world since Fallout 4.
Literally the epitome of “it sucks, I love it.”
@@Soul_Tomato 😂👍
I wanted to play range with spear guns but didnt worked and it ruined the immersion and i unistalled twice, i followed guides, and read tons of wiki stuff to learn to level propertly but nothing... now i want to try going for meele this time.
Melee is primo
@@Soul_Tomato I still want to try it, maybe for christmas, i will try range on easy mode to see...
"the berserkers blame the meteor on technology, which makes no sense"... unless the game is called elex 2.
Then its retconned reason 😎
I'm trying to enjoy it but the canon faction for the sequel was spoiled for me. So I really love the look and idea of a certain faction, but if I beat the game with them and then start the sequel, it's going to be jarring as heck because that's not the canon faction. It's not going to feel like my choices were represented and just ruin the sequel for me lol.
I could just play the game with the intended faction, but they're just so generic and boring.
Eh the sequel is also not even worth playing since the trilogy will never be complete with Pirhanna Bites going out of business. Plus it’s not as good besides in the controls imo.
What about Elex 2? More of the same, worst or better?
Did you play this game in de hardest difficulty?
Elex 2 was smoother for sure but I think a lot of the fun of the factions and even the world itself were lost from what I remember
i freakin love this game. it has a depth many triple A titles pretend to have.
Honestly I think a lot of people crap on it because it’s controls are admittedly a little wack but it’s great fun
agreed
Hey do ever plan on making a elex 2 video?
I've not played it actually. Not sure!
@@Soul_Tomato Oh okay i just thought it would be fun to hear what you're opinion on it is all :D
I tried this game once and didn't like it despite really wanting to
@@dougr8646 it takes a WHILE to get going tbh
this game kicks your A*** but its fun
Hard agree
Walkthrough soon ?
Like a Let’s Play? I’m thinking of doing one for the Archolos mod or Gothic 2 soon actually.
Elex feels like a Piranha Bytes impression of a Spiders game. PB's earlier titles were much better and I enjoy Spiders' stuff for the most part but Elex is an exercise in meandering bloat.
I was a big fan obviously but that’s not an unfair take. It’s def bloated.
I guess I'm not getting a reply...
Not sure what sort of reply you were looking for my dude. It’s a different opinion and you’re valid on a lot of points but I obviously disagree.
@@Soul_Tomato well, what I expected was pretty much that, thank you. But since we're already talking I am interested what we exactly we disagree on. Do you find combat system better than I do or do you just don't care that much as long as difficulty is there?
@@czapla1024 No the combat system is actually pretty awful. Honestly most of the general movement is tedious and unintuative but that's how all their games have been. I just enjoy the world, which I think is one of the best they've made, and the exploration. I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to jank.
@@Soul_Tomatogood video. oddly, i love the combat. has a kind of cadence when you get it down. 2 handed sword is so fun!
I'll be honest with you. I've played all Piranha Bytes game except Elex 2, most of them numerous times. And Elex 1 was really disappointing in comparison.
The difficulty was not challenging, it was tedious, especially at the beginning when I was yet to equip a decent weapon and all my attacks bar the special one dealt a single point of damage to everything stronger than a young rat. That's because the HUD blatantly lies to the player - increasing your strenght does NOT increase your melee damage directly, the only thing attributes do are allowing to meet requirements for equipment and abilities. I COULD'VE increased my STR and DEX anyway to get a better sword or a bow but instead I invested in INT and CUN to get more perks from personality tree so I could pass speech checks with NPC's in Goliet. I thought investing in dialogues is going to be worthwhile like in New Vegas but my reward was a couple of herbs and some lunch money. Some time later I finally get my hands on a new bow so I no longer had to scratch enemies to death. Than five hours later I upgraded my old bow increasing my damage even further. Five hours later I upgraded my new bow as well. And five hours later I found a legendary plasma rifle which has a fire mode that completely stunlocks any target. My "zero to hero" adventure lasted 15 hours out of 85 of my total playthrough time after which the final boss died after eight shots.
Regardless of my point in power combat was NEVER fun except maybe occasional troll, cyclop or robot. Despite visual variety all ranged weapons behave exactly the same to the point that if your animation of pulling an arrow from a quiver gets interrupted you cannot shoot your bow until you press the reload button. But it's leagues ahead of melee with absolutely unsufficient stamina pool at the beginning, some hitboxes extending three meters forwards, effectiveness of blocking and parrying overly depending on both parties' equipment type and next to none tracking between attacks.
Souls games are fun because they give you a hard task and all the tools you need to complete it. Elex instead throws you on hostile world, says "have fun lol" and proceeds to throw rocks at you. This is NOT how previous game worked, either the road to power was relatively straightforward (G1, G3, R2) or you could overcome the power gap using player's skill (G2, R1, R3).
Do I consider Elex 1 a bad game? No, the open world, the setting, the interconnected quest structure, the environmental storytelling are all great. But it only adds to the disappointment because PB did the hardest part and then fell flat with something trivial in comparison which however makes a crucial part of the gameplay loop.
If you're new to the Piranha Bytes's school of cRPGs, consider giving Risen 3 a shot. It's easier, it's more fluid and it's a steal on a sale.
