That takes me back to when I was a kid riding with my dad. He drove for a local supermarket chain that had a fleet of those. Those times made me want to truck.
Yo Jax, the last guy I drove for before buying my own tractor, had me driving a 1985 White-GMC conventional. It was flat gray with dark red stripes. It had a 350hp Cummins and a 9 speed trans. It was also equipped with a wet kit. I pulled both hopper and frame dump trailers with it. I affectionately referred to her as "Old Ugg" because just standing there looking at her, she was one of the FUGLIEST trucks on the road. 😵💫
I was on a dedicated run hauling corn grits to a dog food plant and one day as I was running across Indiana loaded with my grits I passed a diesel cop that was setting in the median looking for a victim. I waved as I normally did, and the next thing I knew, he was right behind me with his lights on. I eased off into the rest area just ahead of me and parked with him right behind me. He was smiling as he walked alongside my trailer (I'm pretty sure he was thinking he had a pricey ticket to write. He was a decent guy and told me that he wanted to inspect my rig. He went over that thing with a fine tooth comb and found ZERO DEFECTS! After he reviewed all of my paperwork and returned it, he gave me a clean inspection sticker for the vent wing window on my driver's door. The last thing he said to me was, "When I pulled in behind you, I would have never believed that there would be zero defects on this rig. The owner he is doing a fine job on his maintenance and upkeep! I only wish that ALL truck owners would be this attentive to their equipment. That would make my job a whole bunch easier!"
My boss was pretty pleased to hear that, as was i!!!
Jax looks like a good one👍👍👍
The motor is the sweet spot on this truck. I was never a fan of sloped hoods. But she looks clean and ready. Nice find.
Nice old truck . Back in my cabover day's when that cab first came out I thought how nice that would be to just sit up get dressed. Even a lot of conventional had the crawl through sleepers still in the early 80s. That white/ gmc would be a great money maker truck for the right person.
Thanks for taking us along on your truck finding adventure.
I agree! She’ll be a smooth runner for someone.
How wonderful to play road trip games with someone as knowledgeable as Rooster. What a blessed young man you are Jax!
Yay Be-Lean!! Truckers have needed such a beneficial health program for decades!!
As far as I am concerned those good old trucks are so much better than the new-fangled ones. They are built so much better! Just like so very, very many other things they just don’t build them like they used to!!
Safe travels jax and Rooster! ❤️🙏
I want that 68 Ford in the background!
I had a 1978 COE Peterbilt 352 in the early 1990's. It had Center Point steering (non power steering) which was about 22 turns from lock to lock. It was old and beat up when I got it. The very first job I had for it was moving a paper storage warehouse from Jersey City to Bayonne. That truck taught me that you turn the wheel when the truck is rolling and not before. Despite keeping it rolling it was pretty brutal on the arms. By the time I got done moving that warehouse I had arms like Popeye...
Love that ol truck. I know you will class the girl up nicely
Funny, I've got an '89. Its got the Volvo emblem on the grill. Not quite so clean tho the 3406b is still going strong. Thats why we still have it.
So if you go back and watch the video from Kathy Mattea eighteen wheels and a dozen roses same truck! Charlie is just like my dad way back in the 60s 70s 80s 90s 2000s. He taught me all I know probably why at 62 I still love trucking.
Amen, Jaxon!!! Re: the craving control.
It’s been a game changer for me. Feeling so good
Bringer on in.Blssings on your new side hustle. Keep the faith.
Sounds like a great side-hustle to help support your own truck habit👍
Hey jax oldest trucker trick in the books.sure your dad may know of it. when you fuel up, every once in awhile, squirt a shot of deisel up under your fifth wheel. and especially in the fall so snow and ice falls off all the moving parts. it is a quick cheep easy lube for your plate to keepem moving and working great. Ive known that trick since i was a teen. I seen guys spray WD40 and all sorts of crap under there, the best thing is good ol diesel. and like a cast iron fry pan, once you gettem well seasoned under there do not stuff the ol wash nozel up in under there. keep them nicely oily and you will love it.
Yep, Volvo Gm drove one back in 98 till 2006 for a company I worked for till she was sold, not a complaint, and enjoyed driving her! Powered by Detroit Diesel I have a picture somewhere, mine had Cruise control but it was on the dashboard with a toggle switch
Cool old truck awesome find sounded great definetly was well maintained
Enjoyed this. I am excited to see what all you do with this idea. I understand your passion for trucks and equipment 100%
The best ever…The little wing window..& most likely, a vent down by drivers left foot…& one on passenger side..Why they stopped,I don’t know
I love those volvo/whites. the trapazoid door windows just did it for me.
Nice ride Jax love your enthusiasm you have on life! It’s a good thing you had the truck driver bladder to find the truck on the auction! Lol
That ole girl seems to be quiet. I haven’t heard any raddling .Great find .
Hoovies garage of big rigs. Nice to see a fellow Montanan doing well on RUclips
Man thats a beautiful truck I love it !!!!! The company I used to work for had a fleet of autocars with n14 plus cummins and they absolutely RIPPED 😂😂 they were day cabs and not comfortable to drive at all but they had no shortfalls of durability and power !!! They used to make a tough truck just like Mack
Hi ya bud. Hope you and the family are doing amazing. Thank you for the hard work you put into these videos. Much love from West Virginia 🙏👍
Dang! What a nice truck! Video was too short Jax! 😂 thanks man
That’s a sweet old truck!!!
I love the old iron and kitty cat motors drove one for years
That’s a good looking old truck. Great videos also love them.
A group of panda bears are called a embarrassment
Love the old iron I had a 1998 Freightliner classic that had a mobile phone in it and it still worked lol. Wish I would of kept the old girl.
Rare you see those white gmc trucks around let alone in that shape and road worthy. Nice score🤘🏼
Awesome find awesome buy very happy for you Jax that truck will out run the newer trucks less stupid stuff to go wrong great video thanks Jax and rooster
I couldn't agree more Jax on cold starts it's the hardest thing on a motor oil is so thick and can't get everything lubricated, there's a youtuber with a trucking channel that thrives on cold starts it's so dumb. I like all the older trucks to bud I'd love ta find a 76 Transtar 4300 that was my first truck. I'd love to find one and restore it and possibly make a show truck. Stay Safe.👍🇺🇸
Congrats! What a beauty she is! Great job on getting healthier and sticking to it.
Thank you !
Try some miso soup! It's available as a paste like substance in big ketchup packed size things or larger ones like a tub of butter. I like to take a few packets and a tiny SnowPeak stove and hike to mountaintops, make videos, take photos and have miso. If there's flowing water on the mountain it's even better. Miso is very healthy actually.
I looked on Amazon and while they don't appear to have the string of 8 or so ketchup size packets for 1 serving, they do have some options available.
Tilden NE!! That's just down the road. Somewhat. Still a 2hr drive from my place, but that's considered close when you live in Nowhere, Nebraska. I'm sure a Montana man would agree.
Nice old truck, I had a 1985 White/Volvo day cab with a 350 Cummings that was a good little/short truck. I ran for year's pulling a lowboy.
Sounds like a sweet little puller!
Wish I knew you were coming thru NE! I live within 40 mins from where you picked the truck up, and actually know of them guys. Been watching your vids in the cab overs since day one… drive safe!!
Very cool Connor ! Thanks for being a long viewer!
That's a nice looking truck! I'm looking forward to seeing what you get done with it.
I could do with a diet/fitness program 😬
I use Huel as meal replacement and easy calorie counting but I am weak for pizza! 😅
Good ol Huel!
Well done.,.
I bought a 98 International cabover and I loooooove it but you weren't joking about them being expensive the first year
Love ❤ your t-shirt.
Before Volvo/White/GMC they were Volvo Whites.......They were the first to market an integral sleeper cab with a hood and the first with air bags on the back of the cab. The 1985 Volvo/White that I drove for several hundred thousand miles was the best riding truck I'd driven after running a couple of Ford CLT9000s.... My VW had a b-model 310 Cat and a 13 speed with 355 gears and ran like a big dog while getting 6mpg, which was awesome mileage in the 90s.....Those cabs were also the first conventionals that were wide between the front doors, so they were very spacious in the front cab area..... I think all of the VWs were flat top (mine was)...... Loved that truck!
Definitely not the first conventional with an integral sleeper.
Right!
Many a Mack, autocar, White , and others decades before the Volvo GMC.@@onentc-pt5go
Mack was years ahead of them with integral sleepers.
mighty volvo w1a for the win!!
I may have to buy one of your trucks and start a side gig! I think its great your keeping there gems on the road!!
Come on up and pick one out !
Oh man its real tempting!!@@realwildwildwest
I drove one of those almost 40 years ago!
Cold starts are the hardest wear and tear that you can do to any engine. I'm with you on plug that heater in and stop the stupid cold starts and omg stop revving the hell out of cold engines. In fact revving to high rpms are not good for any engine no matter how warm the engine is.
Check the cab bushing on the front of the cab
It’s got an Ashtray!
😁😁 for all the ash from that old cat :)
I've got a 1995 Volvo white gmc n14 super ten speed single axle i bought with my 40 ft toy hauler off a friend of mine before he passed away 🙏 god rest his soul
Cold starts, nothing but wear n tear.
That's a big 10.4. 100% agree with ya on cold starts. But one question. Where was the grease on that 5th wheel plate??
I believe they used the polyurethane trailer “slick discs” on their trailers on their farm which require a clean plate. I ended up dumping oil on it to get that cow trailer the last 100 miles up home.
Just an FYI , it’s the Ogallala Aquifer Nebraska and other wells are tapped into
Ive never driven....but these are my absolute favorite truck that volvo ever produced ...yes i know its a white/gmc
I had a 1995 with a 3406B 18 speed . She was metallic green . Great truck . Input a driver in it and he wrecked it .
Built in Dublin Virginia, about 35-40 miles from where I live
The wheels on upside down!
Power steering also was kinda sketchy back in the day.
Belt goes.
Hose blows.
A big wheel will save you!
No power steering made you plan your stops..
You wanted room to roll the tires , because rolling tires are easier to steer.
Used vehicles of any kind have used problems as long as you know what you're looking at and real value you should do ok 👍 😊
Nice 👍 😊❤ …
I will be looking for a couple trailers in the near future…. What do you have or know about for a 48’ spread axel stepdeck?
There will be a lot of 48 foot step decks for sale out there this year. Keep your eyes peeled, you’ll find a deal as trucking continues to struggle through 2024
Shot ya an e-mail Jax, nice wheels!
You really had me interested in that blean program but $250-$500 a month is insane.
You know I thought the same thing at first….. until started adding up how much money I spent eating poorly on the road. I came to the realization that It costs more money to stay trucker heavy than to pay the money for a month to have help getting happy.
@@realwildwildwest that is a very fair point I’ll still have to consider it and look into it
I got my CDL on one of those
when you said that was the first integral sleeper . were there not b model macks make that way and IHC,s
Possibly.. do some digging and let me know!
You found THE diamond in the goats ass! That thing is wicked!
Jax - I’m curious: when you get a truck at auction assuming tags aren’t current, what things do you do so you can drive it home? Do you get a temp plate? Do you add the truck to your insurance policy and MC #? How much time does it take to get all the necessary stuff in place before you can drive it home?
Just insurance coverage. Nothing else special. No mc numbers or dot numbers required to drive it home. Just a phone call to the insurance. 👍🏼
The steering wheel is bothering me lol. I wish the middle piece was at the bottom 😂
Hey you, thats not old, i drove one of those when they came out new😂
That means you are a CLASSIC my friend!
@@realwildwildwest NNNIIICCCCCEEEE
man if I ever catch you in belle I'll come chat you up, problem is you're always rocking a different rig!
😁 that’s true.. lol
I love trucks too, however, Im from the 50's, so I suddenly feel very old... Todd the retired trucker.
& wasn't uni- built @ because it was the 1st for white gmc Volvo = integral sleepers & hadn't done previously before 😮
You use poor man’s cruise a throttle stick lol
Nice. ....rods and mains ??🤞
Only got about 90 k on an full inframe overhaul
Yeah as a mechanic it feels like someone slowly pushing a knife in your chest when watching those "cold start videos"
Yes!!!!
good riding truck bad starters thou they like to stay engaged
Maybe we ll have time update it .
Are the little flashes static as Jax rubs his beard and hair?
My father god rest his soul built them in Pontiac Michigan GMC General motors Pontiac east truck and bus great trucks definitely a classic Volvo white corporation...
Volvo white
So after driving those Nice Brand New Pete 389's for Junior Motorsports how come you don't have one of those instead of all this Old stuff ? Just wondering... 🤔
Great question. I use to have all those trucks off and on over the years. Being TOTALLY honest, the new classics aren’t nice, comfy or quiet. They are all plastic interiors. Peterbilt quit making really nice, quality, smooth and quiet trucks in about 2004. Beautiful on the outside, but they just don’t have it on the inside. Also, I can’t bring myself to deal with these emissions motors. So much unreliability. Also the 225k price tag 😜
Is there a loophole somewhere; I thought feds decided we need def and all these new computerized trucks?
That's year l graduate 1988 high school
You should join ATHS American Truck Historical Society
I crashed that same truck in 2011. it was an 88 it was white with a 425 Cat/Super 10.Was headed south on 281 coming out of Lampasas Texas when a guy we found out later decided me to kill hisself and drove under the front of my truck going 65. It made a hell of a mess and burned to the ground but I was fine. He didn't make was the bad thing. The reason I wanted to tell you this story is that that truck saved me. It took a big hit. So Iv'e got a bunch of pictures just ask for them and i'll send them to ya. But truck on she's safe.
Wild man… wow.
Domo arigato.,.
Might have found a good hobby
Looks like none of the gauges work though, typical kenworth loo
Haha tachometer came back to life halfway home . I believe we re fully functional now :)
@@realwildwildwesthaha couple loose wires need to jiggle and fuse back together hey 😂😂😂
I think you're trying to go into the wrong business friend 😂 you will buy the truck and not want to sell it after you get her all gussied up 😂
I know… it’s my weakness for sure 🤦🏼♂️
My dad had one I want to save her but her ecm is junk and the rats have taken over she had an n14 cummins 425hp
😩
@@realwildwildwestI wish she was in better shape
I honestly really wish I could afford to have that semi my dad's Was burgundy
@@kimblerymeacham4529keep your eyes peeled, you never know what you’ll find!
Mine also had a bad ECM got one from salvage yard with connectors and spliced wires back in had to send it to a place in Florida to have it programmed to my Vin spec's fired right up 😊. If you decide to change your ECM you need to figure out if your's is a select or a select plus it makes a difference 🤔 use cab fresh and rat traps to chase critters out!!! I'm stripping interior out of mine now and cleaning 🥴
There’s a few jackass’s on RUclips that think it’s great to do cold starts, One of the worst is gentry & sons, This guy is a joke and even calls his Pete rooster, I’m sure he came up with the name from your dad, Enjoy your videos from central Fl.
Oh man… cold starts make me wanna cry 😢
@@realwildwildwest just think of the damage that their doing, Just for laughs! SMH
Drug addicts don't make good drug dealers lol😅
🤣 ain’t that the truth!
Most trucking videos are depressing to watch to me as a trucker. Yours are not.
That’s a high praise ! Thank you :)
you should try an og scania 112M truck that truck could hit 100mph before limiters made us late home from work
Get some old detroits 6 71 or 871 hell ya
Shut you probably run across all kinds of things from pickups to cars to big trucks metal signs anything that's worth collector money
