Alas (a Malala) Alas (a Malala), Wings to Malala by Arturo Márquez Alas is dedicated to Malala Yousafsai, a Pakistani activist who fought for education as a fundamental right of children and young people, which earned her the Nobel Price for Peace in 2014. The piece became the hymn of the National Movement of Musical Ensembles in Mexico. From there, it spread to all countries in the Ibero-American region through Iberorquestas, a multilateral project of technical and financial collaboration with the goal of promoting the musical development of children, encompassing the years between childhood and youth, and focusing on the low to medium income population undergoing social risk. Musically speaking, the music is written in the genre of the cumbia, a dance-oriented music genre popular throughout Latin America. It began as a courtship dance practiced among the African population on the Caribbean coasts of Colombia and Panama. It later mixed with Amerindian and European instruments, steps and musical characteristics and spread throughout Latin America and abroad. While other genres of Latin American music have remained associated with specific countries or regions, cumbia has grown to be one of the most widespread and unifying musical genres to emerge from Latin America.
