I had just started working at Warner Bros. when this mini series was being filmed. I got the script on my desk and couldn't put it down. I remember they were filming on Kauai in Hawaii and the weather wasn't cooperating for them. The best mini series at the time perhaps ever. Ratings were phenomenal. The choice that Father Ralph battled until the end....ambition vs. love. It was a tragic ending but Meggie still loved him and he knew that.
I think one of the things that I most about this series, was that meggie, knew who Ralph was the whole time, and loved him. You could always see the passion, struggle in ralph, there was never question that he loved her.
I think the best mini series ever. It was brutal, harsh,,intriguing, painful, heartbreaking but above all of that, the love between Ralph and Meggie was so strong and they were bonded for life.
I can't help wondering why they felt the necessity to go to Hawaii to film these scenes... there are so many breathtaking places in Queensland and all over Australia ...Australia Is such a heavenly beautiful place..❤️...
I find myself watching this before I need to sleep because it's relaxing and I can feel the nature, music, and character empathizing distantly with me.

The Thorn Birds is a masterpiece … and everytime I cry and my heart breaks 💔 It s not easy to make the right choices in our life .. and many times we pay a bad price , because we loose something that is very important for us . But early we don t understand , we realize it then , when it’s too late . But Love .. love is forever . Also in the bad choices , Ralph and Meggie had been loving , and they always have been loving .. forever ……..
You're absolutely spot on...this is one of the most amazing mini series ever made...be it the entire cast and crew...the production and direction teams...and the background music / score... A once in a lifetime watch...

I first watched this with my mom when I was about 15yrs old. That was 30 yrs ago and I remember feeling no movie/mini- series had made me feel as much emotion as Thorn Birds did. Even now, as I just watched her walking on the beach alone, I cried just as hard as I did the first time I watched it. So much respect for the actors, writers, and composers of this movie!!

Poor abandoned girl. It yawns like a fish thrown ashore - even though it has lungs and breathes - it lives! Crying helps you see clearly. Love walks on the beach and will find you. For sure. 😊
Funny, I've been to that beach a number of times since 1981. Its located on the island of kauai. If traveling counter clockwise it is all the way at the end of the road. When looking out at the ocean the road comes in from the left and behind. There used to be a house there many years ago off to the left. Probably not since about the 70s. I was told that the house belonged to the son of Elizabeth Taylor.
Well, that is an interesting footnote, but was this supposed to take place on Kauai, or was that just where it was filmed? They could have mixed their shooting locations to make the area _seem to be_ a fictional place, Or that could have been at a fictional version of that beach?
BTW; Elizabeth Taylor had a son who was grown in the 1970's?? She is still alive, today!!! I wonder about all those jokes of her being a vampire! And, remember that Twilight Zone episode that was inspired by her, called "Queen of The Nile"? Maybe Sterling was on to something?! 😦
I think the author of the book, although extremely talented, had a warped sense of life and womanhood! Btw, she wasn't a product of her mother's indiscretion, her oldest brother was!
