This tutorial is for changing the IR Filter from Playstation 3 camera. Only intended to be used as a supporting material for students taking Human Factors Project.
Fantastic video, and it’s still absolutely relevant after the upload date. No other video explains the differences between the two different models as clearly as this one. Thank you for the upload.
Just wanted to leave this here, I did this procedure last year using this tutorial (which is very good). However I got tired of stabbing my camera and used a soldering iron to melt out the IR blocker, just digging out the molten soft plastic. It worked really well and fast but you have to be careful to 1. not inhale the fumes, 2. don't accidentally melt the screwholes near the lens (I did that and had to drill a new hole to make it work, but it worked!) and 3. use a soldering tip that you typically don't use, because otherwise you will have to clean it. I would really recommend this approach because it was so easy to do.
Great finding this after the fact; I was wondering why I was having so much trouble getting the thin glass filter out. Now I have microscopic pieces of glass exploded all over my desk, floor, and lodged in my finger. Extra haptic mouse-clicks FTW
Very helpful, thanks for sharing. I found that using a very thin tipped soldering iron to melt the plastic around the IR lens was a really quick and easy way too remove it too. :)
thanks for this! i knew there were 2 types of ps3 cameras and one of them was bad but all the articles explaining the two types used photobucket, which seems to have done something to block the photos so i didn't know which one is which!
Thank you. I was about to pull trigger on a camera off eBay, but it had the bad lens. Like another comment, all the photobucket links for images between the 2 lenses have expired. Knowing what to look for, for a guaranteed good lens is so much better than buying blind.
After the successful removal of the IR Filter, the camera will be off focus. Somebody claims it is possible to solve the issue by playing a little bit with the focus of the camera (titling the optics), others by adding some spacers. I achieved good focus by sanding the base of the optics just a little bit (as I read on several forums). Since my goal was to use the camera with open track, I added a visible light filter ( Zoomei 720 nm if I remember well).
be careful of Ebay sellers from game stores, some seem to know about this and will post a picture of the round lens camera .. my seller even says picture is of actual camera but shipping the flat lens version
I read somewhere that it was possible albeit more difficult to modify the flat lens. That is NOT true, it can't get modified. I dremeled around what I thought was the IR filter until it came out. What you can access from the rear if the lens is actually the last lens in the assembly. I think with those the IR coating is not a separate filter but the coating on one of the lenses: Game over!
Aaaaaah! I had the flat lense and tried to remove the IR filter according to a guide/video from years ago. Much jabbing and prying and cutting later, I'd removed an optical component 5mm thick and destroyed the lense assembly. Yes, it was a flat-fronted one.
Small note: the one with the 'wrong lens' has no ir filter; if you lower the gain and exposure, you would still see lights from an IR led remote. (tested it myself with a remote)
That's incorrect. Virtually every camera have an IR filter, but the filter does not completely remove all IR light, around 5~10% of it still passes through. When you remove the IR filter of a camera the strength of an IR led gets extremely bright and colors, specially at daylight will become very desatured and blown out.
hi nice video. I have the camera model with a lens that is more difficult to remove. despite this I managed to remove the IR filter. However, if I use it with OpenTrack I don't see the LEDs. How can I test the correct functioning of the camera? if I use it as a normal webcam with the Windows drivers I can't see anything just a circle with a blurry image in the center
Hey. It will be more correct not to remove the filter but to remove the sputtering and put the filter back. In this case, the focus of the lens does not fail.
Can someone please tell me the correct model # for the easily modified eyetoy? The model number I just ruined (lol) is SLEH-00448 and it is a flat (wrong) lense, I didnt know till I came here after already destroying it.
@@trekkingromagna9324 if you get the right eye toy you will kno immediately once you take it apart, the circuit board is different. Also the lens you can see, like if you look at the toy while it's still to gather has to be a fish eye type lense, not flat like your currently model.
if you accidentally bought the FLAT LENS type, DO NOT try to modify it, but just put a filter (old film negative, or floppy disc).it will work just fine.
hi I haven't purchased the Ps3 Eye Camera yet. (still searching for a round lens cam) I actually have 2 questions 1 you sure old Camera Films will work? 2 does the film need to be used meaning one with an actual photograph impression on it or does it need to be plain.
