Hey Tom, just wanted to say I’ve been watching your videos for around a year now and I wanna thank you for making my lockdown and times of stress and boredom a lot better.
You NEED to hide the URL somehow if not by going into fullscreen then by hiding it with an overlay or smth. Otherwise the geotips mods wont submit your record, check the submission rules.
I mean it says it “may be denied”. I’d bet they would accept his record but ya, it’s best to hide it just in case. (Do you know why they have that rule?)
I am not a native speaker but doesnt this: "If the video isn´t played fullscreen or with the url part hidden, the submission may be denied." mean he has to show the url?? And no you can't replay a game with the url, but you can see all round results and locations. So having the url would be even better for the geotips mods.
Always appreciative of when Tom gives golden nuggets of advice for us idiots: "Forests are forests to be honest, they just look like forests." The guy's a genius!
This fast pased stuff is just as entertaining as the methodical talk through so keep it up Tom, may seem like it's not engaging but it's just as great and gets you closer to the record
12:55 what's that red thing on the tree to the left? looks like some forestry tree marking, but it isn't just paint. i'd say that could be a vital clue.
As a Hungarian it was really funny when at 12:28 you considered choosing the Hortobágy, because it is one of the biggest plains in Hungary with absolutely no connection to the vegetations that you were searching for
Haha so I'm not the only one who did the math. If the chances of a successful round were really as low as 1/20 it would mean that he is pretty much guaranteed to never make it onto the leaderboard. Might as well just go and play the lottery instead.
Old forests in western Poland are mostly pines and other conifers, also beeches, because of the sandy soils. That last round looked very eastern polish so at least you'll know in the future. Great video and amazing guesses nonetheless, cheers!
jaja that was awesome!... that last round needs some angle measurement of the shadows using photogrametry, by estimating about 9:45 in the morning during autumn or spring estimate a latitude, country, orientation, boom! lol
Hey. Quick tip about the First Turkey round: If there are old white houses looking like they're from 19th century, you're definetely in one of the cities near Marmara Sea, but east of Istanbul.
What you explained at the beginning is kind of what happens in Minecraft speedruns: you have to reset often in order to get the perfect seed! And indeed focus when you eventually get one
Question: Does the resolution of your monitor matter, or how does Google maps display that? Would a higher res screen give you a bigger picture with a wider view? Or a more detailed view of the same area? Or it is all output in 720p, so resolution does not matter?
It's a 360 degree photo so the resolution is really quite low, you wouldn't see more detail once you get over 720p or something is my guess. But an ultrawide could definitely help like the other comment suggests. Then again, changing the aspect ratio of the browser window probably would just crop the image, so I'm not sure how the game decides on displaying the image.
as long as the monitor has a higher resolution or the same as the image then it doesnt matter. and i seriously doubt google maps ever go to 1080p which I'll assume Tom's monitor is
@@The8347135 yes, but at a certain point like 4K or maybe 8K, you have enough real-estate to show the entire 360 degree photosphere. I know with my 2 monitor setup I can see 180 degrees.
It's multiple images stitched together to form one 360 degree image, so standard categories like 720p and 1080p don't really work. That said I think a single frame of a normal google street view image is roughly around 720 to 1080p in terms of image quality/ pixel density. So I don't think 4k would help.
I can’t believe Tom was given a picture and he managed to click on a map and get 4 yards away from it. Unbelievable.
in the middle of nowhere, might i add
In rural Kenya of all places as well. Most people wouldn't even be able to do that in their own city.
