It really does! But, if I were a betting girl, I’d bet that ever Laura has her garden struggles. I have so many failures in the garden but I always more success than failures overall.
Would be neat to see a container comparison where you plant with the cheapest soil versus really good quality soil, just to see the difference it makes :)
I’d like to see that along with a comparison where she does two pots with the same soil, but one with Proven Winners Supertunias and another with generic petunias of the same color. Experiments are always fun!
Ground soil sets up like concrete. Uhg! Water runs through channels and the plants seem to get little water. Sparse, weak leaves, almost skeletal and dingy flowers. I've learned my lesson.
I’d definitely watch that one! I think with everyone doing more gardening now due to the public health issues we’ve been having, it’s been hard to find potting soil! I started out the season with my favorite kind, but now some stores are out of potting soil and I just have to get what’s left anywhere I can get it.
i would never know since i make my own potting mix. i suggest everyone try making their own - it's easier than one would think and there are lots of expert youtubers who teach how. it all starts with great compost. once you know how, you'll never buy again.
While watching your video, I said “I think my plants have budworms.” My 6 year old, who knows how much I love Garden Answer, said, “Whatever she says works, buy it.” Yep. Even six year olds know Laura is an expert.

100% YES on picking PW plants! I planted Supertunia Bubblegum in my container arrangements for the first time this year and they are SPECTACULAR! Even my boys and husband have been amazed! 😂 Best part though, is no deadheading!
Unfortunately, 3 out of my 4 concrete containers (that I've had for 20 years!!! How did the ancient civilizations manage to make their last from then til now-and going & going....?!?!) decided they were done & pretty much crumbled to smithereens! A friend gave me a couple of faux whiskey barrels that I still haven't planted anything still but hoping to still make it in time for a lush end-of-fall showing. You inspire me all the time. When I have an ugh-too-hot-outside moment, I watch one of your videos & it kicks me into gear. :) So, thank you from the bottom of my heart to the tips of my grubby fingers.

Those pots are absolutely the most gorgeous things I’ve ever seen. I can’t imagine the joy you must feel each time you walk past them. I have small pots but enjoy planting them and I’m getting ready next year to put in some type of drip lines. I can’t thank you enough for your videos every day, they are always so inspiring.
Amen to the $3 compared to the $5. I tried the wave petunias in the front of my house and it has been trying. I will definitely spend the extra 💰 for Proven winners. I did some PW petunias in back of my house and it was worth it for sure. I was just trying it out in front to see if petunias would do well since my front yard only gets a couple hours of sun. Trial complete, plenty of sun and come on PW petunias next year! Something to look forward to - planning started. 😊 And change to concrete or aqua pots 😉. Love the color explosion.
Amor Ashby same, I’m in Ireland and with COVID can’t get proven winners delivered but my pots are so much improved anyway just from watching these videos🇮🇪😊
I found that a mix of soil from the garden with new soil (1:2 to 1:3) works really well with tomatoes. The soil from the garden locks up water nicely, but with a majority of new pot soil, it still is airy. At least it has worked for me now :)

I made the mistake of buying a 6 cell pack of lobelia over a Proven winners plant this summer, for my containers to save some money. ( BIG MISTAKE) I ended up ripping them out because they looked terrible. My window box has proven winners in it and it looks amazing. Thank you Laura for all that you do. I’ve learned so much from your channel
I occasionally will buy a 6 pack & bump them up to quarts to get more roots before I plant them. Only if what I want isn't available in a larger size. Usually, only the cheapest plants are grown in 6 packs as the "plugs" (tiny plants provided to growers) can have a large price difference.
Lobelia isn't a sun lover. It tends to like the cooler weather. Watering is tricky with them too. I buy them often but this might be my last year. Or I'll put them in more shade. They're so pretty tho so hard to pass up. And I deadhead them by running my fingers through them. And they'll re bloom. But generally by mid Aug. they're toast.

Giving myself a pat on the back! I have been following everything on the list! My containers have improved 100% since I started following & watching your videos!!!! Thank you for helping me become a better gardener! 😊🌹🌿💐🌺🌼💚❤🌿
I’ve supertunia Bordeaux from nursery in a six pack cheaper than 1 pack & it grows huge in my East facing garden from last two years. I’ve not used high quality soil or fertilizers. I used $2.99 compost soil n consistent watering🙏🏽
We’re headed out of town/country for a couple of months. We used Rain Bird’s Irrigation Kit and literally used up everything and then some. With your tips and know how, we are confident our gardens will be thriving during our absence. Our Gardener will keep a close watch. Thank you!!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✨
They are gorgeous!! I have to become more diligent with fertilizing. I add it when planting and then try to fertilize every other week but that doesn't always happen. Seeing your containers makes me realize how much better mine would look if I fertilized every week. Thanks for sharing these 10 tips. 🌻💗🌻💗
I can definitely say that fresh soil, biotone & fertilizer definitely makes a difference. I never used fresh soil and I never used a starter fertilizer and my containers are glorious this year. I’m a convert!
This weekend I went to a local garden center here in North Idaho where they sell Proven Winners. I got to see a TON of the plants you use in your garden and it was so fun to see the actual plants in person! They were doing an event called "Hydrangeapalooza" with over 300 varieties of hydrangeas so I finally got to see the Quick Fire, the Limelight, and TONS more. It was awesome!
Wow Laura what a fantastic video . Plants look great ! Do you eat your Nasturtiums? Boy , I do in salads .. by the way you look radiant ( mama) ! I’m so excited for you and Aaron & Benjamin and family . Since your having his best friend . Aweee so sweet ! Love that boy !
I used to buy the cheap packs of petunias and hated having to deadhead them all the time. I was so happy when I found your channel and started using the Proven Winners petunias. No more deadheading and they grow so big and lush. I only wish our big box stores sold more Proven Winners plants in MN. Thank you for all you do Laura.
EXCELLENT list Laura! I work in a garden centre and the biggest issues with our customers' flower pots are definitely consistency in watering and fertilizing. The size of the container makes a huge difference. Thank you for going over this list!
Most of the time I cant afford the good potting soil, and i really cant afford concrete pieces, BUT when i can afford the good potting soil, i can really see a difference. I planted 2 dahlia tubers, bought the same place, same variety, same pot, same everything, except i ran out of the good soil so in 1 i used the cheap stuff, and the difference is insane. Much faster, bigger and healthier growth on the good one. I always felt stupid paying a lot of money for dirt, but i really always buy the good stuff when i can.
Think of in a different prospective, one is garden soil (dirt) and other is potting mix (soil), once I started to think of it like that it was easier to justify it since the are 2 completely different things. I buy them in 4-1 ratio and mix. Since I am not always available for consistent watering. So buying in that rationale I am ( in my mind, at least) buying the "moisture control" soil at a lower cost. The 4-1 mix I make depends also what container or plants I use. I have seen a huge difference not only in cost but how often I need to water. Next yr I plan to make my own to get cost down further, since I am a "frost watcher"!! Big box stores such as Lowes in my zone 5 get a huge amounts of plants in way too early, so they haven't the space to keep them protected and they get hit by frost! So it's time for me to adjust my schedule and squeeze in a trip to store every 2 -3 days as they put the damaged plants on clearance rack, yippie :-) !!! I literally save hundreds and hundreds not only on annuals, but like at this time of summer (mid-July) they are pushing perennials out on to clearance racks! So all the money I save on my clearance plants is also allowing me to justify spending a few extra bucks on good potting mix. Another way to save, is save last year's soil and fill the bottoms of this yrs pots, along with whatever you have handy like cut up pool noodles, empty crushed up pots (and inverted pots) the plant comes in, or vary large cleaned rocks. That empty space at bottom of larger containers are now filled with something much cheaper, hope that helps! Oh one other thing is save on pots! I buy my pots at garage/estate sales, also I pick them up roadside during village clean up days, WOW the money I save there is extraordinary!!! The only investment I have there is soap, water, disinfectant! Pots are crazy expensive, they make potting soil look cheap! I know they all might not match, but some light sanding and some primer (dont skip this part!) and your color choices of spray paint and like magic, they all match! Just dont hit the spray painted surface with strong water spray (it will chip if you do, trust me I know :-○)
What I really like about these 2 containers is that although they have a slight tropical look, they can effortlessly move in to the fall without being changed. Plus, I do prefer a more natural less manicured look. 👍💚
Wow!!! Those pots have gone crazy! ❤️ I’m in central AZ and I’m having to water my pots twice a day even those that are on drips! 110 degrees + for days on end are taking its toll! I do have a couple covered with sun shade fabric and they are doing great! That’s my next investment!
Great overview for summer annuals. You always seem to know what we need a lesson on. Just love watching you each morning. Congrats on your pregnancy, and don’t overdo!😘
These stunning containers remind me of our recent trip to Mackinac Island. The color variation is just gorgeous! Thank you for sharing your trip last fall with us, so I could go see this for myself. How completely glorius! Will you be visiting again, and have you ever taken your mom there?
I love the peach/coral with the yellow and pops of purple 💛💜 ! Those Canna's are so beautiful...the colour ❣Because of you I am now in love with yellow/lemon flowers 🌼🌻🌼🌻
We have a lot of shady areas in our garden and in past years i spent a lot of money on coleus, impatiens and begonias. Last year I planted a few caladiums too. You got a lot later in the year and that kinda reinforced my interest. I found that the caladiums flourished in both sun and shade and were not bothered by slugs and snails like coleus or the fungal blights that keep hitting impatiens and begonias in our area. So this year, I limited the number of coleus, impatiens and begonias I bought and spent most of my budget on bare root caladiums. It took a frustrating 6 to 7 weeks for them to really flush out, but now that they have, WOW, they look great. I had purchased several lots of mixed varieties and then two lots of Red Flash. The only complaint I have is that i probably planted too many Red Flash in each container, since they are really big and vigorous and because I did not know what each of the roots from the mixed varieties were, I wound up with some containers with an unbalanced number of one variety or another. I had to dig up and move some around to get the right mixture of colors. I really like that there is no deadheading or even pruning needed. I will lift and store them in the fall, putting each color variety in a separate bag (so i know which one is which) and replant them next spring and maybe look for other varieties.
I love how you added the time signature! I haven't seen anyone do that. I had to stop, reverse, and pause view. I like the visual and will reverse again and screenshot these tips. So happy I'm doing a little better and learning to be better with my annuals! 😀
Thank you! You answered all my questions. I’ve gone container happy since I found your channel. Planted about 15 lately. Found some bubble gum supertunias and was excited to plant them. 😀🌷🌿🌹
I am now a believer in Espoma Bio-Tone Starter Plus! I potted about a dozen containers, then decided about 2 weeks later to plant the plants into the ground. Bio-Tone was used in all containers but one, which I simply forgot and chose not to re-do at the time. When planting into the ground, the Bio-Tone pots were full of healthy new roots, but the one with no Bio-Tone still had it's original rootball and not much else. It was PHENOMENAL. I will ALWAYS use Espoma Bio-Tone Starter Plus in the future, with everything.
Hi Laura and Aaron! These are some great, and very much appreciated, tips. I love how you don't just say to do something, but take the time to explain the reason behind it. Those containers are beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing!
Hey! Love your videos as usual!!! July garden tour PLEASE! Its actually SUPER helpful to see what’s still blooming in the dog days of summer, and what’s not. I feel like through the years I’ve watched your Iceberg roses go and go and go! Is that true? Just a walk through tour on your highlights channel without any commentary would totally hit the spot!!! Anything!
As always loved your video. Very informative. I am just getting into gardening and noticed some green “wormy” insects on a rose bush my sons bought me for Mother’s Day. I had heard of aphids but knew it wasn’t that, but now I know it is probably budworm. Going to get some Bt today. Thank you Laura 💐
You are simply amazing! I have a learnt so much from watching your videos and you have been such an inspiration during this COVID-19 lock-down. We have been updating our backyard and thanks to you, our yard is coming along beautifully! Love your personality and "realness". All the best to you and your family and congratulations on your 2nd pregnancy.
I was trying to save $$$ this year because we have a TON of projects on the go around the yard - so, I bought the cheapest potting soil I could find because I needed so much. DON'T. EVER. DO. THAT. PEOPLE.!!! Laura is 1,000% right when she says you get what you pay for. That soil has cost me more than 3 dozen plants, countless frustration and many hours of replanting. It held the moisture and many plants rotted off without me watering after the initial planting. Other container plants are just not progressing - slow to non-existent growth and small plants where they are actually growing. I am so bummed, but have learned my lesson. Thanks for all your tips and suggestions, Laura! I have shared your videos with numerous family and friends and truly appreciate all your knowledge and inspiration!
Newer to gardening and always watch your videos. This video was particularly helpful as we have a south facing balcony. My supertunia bubblegum & bordeaux are glorious! Thank you Laura! 😃🌷

I can definitely say that fresh soil, biotone & fertilizer definitely makes a difference. I never used fresh soil and I never used a starter fertilizer and my containers are glorious this year. I’m a convert!
hey me too
10 helpful tips.................... your videos are always very informative!!!!!
Love your videos Laura. You and your family are so fun to watch and I'm always inspired. You are a beautiful lady inside and out.
yes Laura very helper video. great looking containers.
The heat here in southern Louisiana is so intense!! I’m going to try the Gailardia for my window box. Loved the video!! You look beautiful!!
South Louisiana here too 🤝
Have you tried Supertunia Vista.....plant early so they get established before heat sets in and they are amazing!
That was extremely helpful!! Thank you SO MUCH for making these videos! I'm so glad I found you!!👍❤️
I wish all the garden centres here in England have all these knowledge and lots of varieties and good quality plants, God bless you.
Just dont hit the spray painted surface with strong water spray (it will chip if you do, trust me I know :-○)
Love this video! I’m a new container gardener and there were some great tips!
What I really like about these 2 containers is that although they have a slight tropical look, they can effortlessly move in to the fall without being changed. Plus, I do prefer a more natural less manicured look. 👍💚
Bravo so beautiful and healthy plants. Great job. Congrats
Wow!!! Those pots have gone crazy! ❤️ I’m in central AZ and I’m having to water my pots twice a day even those that are on drips! 110 degrees + for days on end are taking its toll! I do have a couple covered with sun shade fabric and they are doing great! That’s my next investment!
You have made gardening a pleasure and not a chore for me!! Thank you for letting us share your lives and for all of your valuable experience!
Thank you Laura! Some of us are slow learners, thanks for telling us
repeatedly! 🤗💜
Wow Laura. They look amazing. I remember when you first planted them. Spectacular. So tropical.
Great tips Laura! i love your videos (thank you Aaron ... you do a great job filming & editing!)
one of the best videos you have made! thank you for so much information!!!!
Great overview for summer annuals. You always seem to know what we need a lesson on. Just love watching you each morning. Congrats on your pregnancy, and don’t overdo!😘
I have learned so much from Laura and am eternally grateful to her. My garden has flourished because I followed her advice.
I'm an experienced gardner and I always learn something from you. THANK YOU
We have a lot of shady areas in our garden and in past years i spent a lot of money on coleus, impatiens and begonias.
Good morning. Another good video that I needed right now. Going out shortly to fertilize and trim. Thanks
Stunning container.
Happy gardening day! 🌻🌼🌸🌺🌾
Hi Laura and Aaron! These are some great, and very much appreciated, tips. I love how you don't just say to do something, but take the time to explain the reason behind it. Those containers are beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you this useful information . I think the key is the space .!
So much useful information in such a brief amount of time. So motivating to get out and figure out a solution to very annoying issues. Thanks so much!
I have been using Bag organic soil in my containers. so far so good. Love your show !
Those flowers and the containers are stunning!! Thanks for all the great tips! 🙂
Getting ready to water my plants and here comes Laura, well I will do it later
Good Morning!
Thanks for recharging me! I was not going to do my weekly fertilizer today but now I’m pumped back up! Just what I needed!
Anything!
Beautiful flowers 🌺🌹🏵💮🌷🌻🌸💕
As always loved your video. Very informative. I am just getting into gardening and noticed some green “wormy” insects on a rose bush my sons bought me for Mother’s Day. I had heard of aphids but knew it wasn’t that, but now I know it is probably budworm. Going to get some Bt today. Thank you Laura 💐
They're extraordinary!
I agree I love them too
You are simply amazing!
This was a big topic on the Facebook group! Thank you for addressing this 💗 they are STUNNING
