Love the orange flower on the plant. And the cat ornaments are beautiful. My two cats jump at each other also. I have a Seal point, and a gray tuxedo kitts’s. I had a black cat named Onyx his under coat was as white as snow. My Vet said she had never seen a cat like that before so he was very unique. Great video.

Long time sub of Eric’s here, if I could add a tip for gardening : when buying the plants from a store then planting at home, they will go through a “transplant shock”. This is very normal but when you add intense sun it will destroy smaller plants. The larger one can take it and shed off half of its size and regrow. So a sun shade or something like that would help. That mulch you put down will help retain water , which is good. But those plants leaves can’t use the sun energy that’s why they just wilted .
Yeah, I experienced the same learning curve moving from Hawaii to WA State...keep working it and looking for guidance. You'll make it work! ❤

The mulch will definitely slow down the evaporation which will promote microbial health and growth. Good luck!!!

First and most important, choose plants which are suitable and will thrive in the agricultural region that you are located in. I believe Sho Low area is Region 6b. You can even look up plant zones by zip code online. The folks in the nursery can tell you which plants will thrive in that region. Sometimes the label of the plant will indicate the region as well.
The soil you added needs to be at root level. Next time, try this.....Dig a hole, put soil in the hole, drop the plant in the hole then bury the base of the plant with more quality soil. Keep it watered and by putting mulch on top of all that it will help keep the moisture from evaporating and it will keep your plants happy. A drip system would be great too and pretty easy to set up. Only water after sundown or overnight when the water will not evaporate before it gets to the roots. Good luck! It doesn't look so bad to me. Just needs a little TLC.
Thank you gor the suggestion. Unfortunately the dirt here is not dirt. It's more like clay and has so many rocks. Hard to dig. But we feel satisfied that we at least tried it.

If you make heart rocks taller, like a raised bed, fill with more soil and also put in ollas for watering.

Love the garden and know the Challenges as I live in the same area. I ended up building my plant boxes above the ground a little and still had to water often but had a beautiful garden of flowers and vegetables. Hang in there your garden will be beautiful !!
add compost to the soil before you plant, after planting add the mulch to hold in moisture.
Maybe a dripping system next if this doesn't work. And it will water the plants for you while you're gone on all your adventures. 😊

start watering at night. that way the sun doesn't burn it out. once the sun goes down the water may soak in better
I would say that the natural "soil" has become water phobic... it repels water. It may even be very clay-like. You may be wise to get some "soil wetter" - you can get stuff that you mix with water: it helps the water penetrate the over-dry soil and get down to the roots much better. maybe some gypsum if the soil IS like clay... as that will break it down and open it up to water.
Also adding fresh mulch can draw Nitrogen out of the soil as it breaks down; so it can be beneficial to top-dress the area with a complete fertiliser before adding mulch (or in this case you can move it aside and apply it under the mulch then replace it). Also it may be good to dig a much bigger hole than you normally would and backfill with some high quality soil to give the roots time to establish... If the water is more or less staying on top and then evaporating away it's going to be hard to get it down INTO the root-ball of the new plants.
Anyway, I'm no "Garden Guru" - just a few things I have picked up over the years.
The mulch may help, but the high altitude sun is just brutal. The red color looks pretty, and the garden in Jax memory is still very nice.
Maybe try olla watering Ernst. They are unglazed terracotta bottles buried in the ground and filled with water that slowly seeps out at root level.
If you get to Albuquerque NM they have demonstration desert gardens.

I'd say you may have to almost over water it a bit & get you some miracle grow perhaps. Looks awesome with the mulch! Good job
I'm guessing that the soil is very alkaline, like most of the southwest. Adding mulch will help acidify it, but a raised bed with good soil would probably work better as opposed to making that dirt better. The red mulch really makes it look good. Take care.
Diana, the best to use in that environment & earth are drought tolerant plants. Succulents can survive better and they do multiply to fill in the garden boundary.

Switch out the dead plants for suculents which will do better in that climate and require less watering

Mulch is good, but even better, you need rich dark natural soil --- with worms and nutrients in it ... too much mulch will not feed it what it needs.

You could also paint rocks and make a beautiful Rock Garden.

The climate and soil aren’t ideal conditions for plants. There are several options before you.
Preparing the soil with moisture absorption, watering with a drip irrigation system ( to keep the water from immediately evaporation) and considering using permaculture techniques.
Planting in the desert is possible but not in the same way one does in more moist environments.
Dont give up, just keep trying until you find the right way for your garden.

I noticed you put down plastic, then dirt and then the plants, did you cut holes in the plastic so the plants can take root in the soil? Get rid of that plastic.
I agree dig a hole deep enough then put plant in fill it with water and cover with good soil
I did dig a hole through the plastic thingy. But the dirt here is clay and has so many rocks.

@@Dianakitties I'm sorry, just seeing your reply. I think the best bet would be raised beds with good dirt, fertilizer and mulch, or even planting in real large pots with good dirt etc..

1:18 also they need the water on the roots, when you spray from the top it burns the leaves and top watering dries out too quickly.
I use a thing called a bubbler.
Maybe a raised bed would be better if this one doesn’t work out. It looks so nice.
Never believe full sunlight, I would put some sort of netting over the garden that blocks some of the sunlight
Maybe fake plants they make realistic ones that will last forever
