    Years ago I got a cheap £3 asda gardening saw and it cut, but it was rough.
    Then got a laplander which was 5 times the price of the asda, but the quality was a huge leap.
    Then got a Gomboy which again about 4 times the price of the laplander, but the cut quality leapt again.
    A good one to watch for is the Chinese Pocketboy, which I got after seeing Scott's and its about best £6 of saw you can get. It's not going to wow you with cutting quality, but its so cheap it's handy as tool to just throw in a bag for if you spot a decent piece of project wood, or fancy a brew on the fly.

      I forgot Scott has one , red handle.
      I'm tempted to buy a mid price straight blade pruning saw now, samurai probably.

      @@RobEvansWoodsman I like the curved blade on the Gomboy and Bigboy. Think the straight blade on the pocket boy is an advantage for detail work.

    Thank you for a fair and impartial comparison. I think you confirmed what most of us already know, you get what you pay for. The thing is, not all of us bushcrafters need a saw that big very often, so it's nice to see that we can buy something adequate for occasional use, for a tenner. And I think this holds true with most of our kit. I have £10 - £15 Mora knives that work for what I do, no need to spend £100s on custom blades. I used a £5 folding saw from Wilko for years, before I treated myself to a Silky. My day pack is an LK35 I bought for under £30, I have a Zebra Head 14cm pot that cost £15 and a £20 3m × 3m Chinese made tarp that cost about £15 on ebay. You really don't need to spend a fortune, especially when you're getting started, you just need to know the difference between cheap and inexpensive.

    The Irwin saw reminds me of the Cold Steel Bushman knife. Cheap with a hollow handle. I always meant to get a bushman knife, but always found something I wanted more!

    When I was looking up the Zubat I saw that they have a version with an extension handle to cut things high up. That company thinks of everything. The word comes from a Japanese word that means "the sound when a target is hit perfectly" so it's spot on 😎

  • @jimcy1318
    @jimcy1318 2 года назад +4

    The point is Rob, those Irwin saws and the like are pretty much the Stanley knife blade of the saw world. If you just want a sharp knife for rough work you'd just buy a Stanley, you wouldn't buy a hand made knife for a few hundred quid, even though it's far superior. The same goes with the pruning saw, if you trash it, leave it in the rain or on site, who cares to much. I use things like that for plaster board or cellcon blocks, I'm sure a Silky would be better but not at sixty quid. But the comparison was worth making, if only to show you can bush craft on a budget until you can afford better. 👍🇩🇪

    Silky are so good because they're designed for green wood (pruning) but will outcut most other drywood bladed saws when it comes to a bit of dry firewood.

    Very good demo. Life might depend on a saw in some circumstances...my nightmare scenario (one that turns out favorably), is having a big branch land on my protected shelter and having to saw my way out. That's why I bought a nice curved Silky. At least I can sleep better...with a fantasy escape from a fantasy horror.
    Darn! Now I need a camp shovel :)

    You need to make undercuts on the hung up branch to stop binding for both saws

    I think it boils down to the TPI and the hardness of the teeth combined with thickness and quality of the steel. Also, I think that these cheap Pruning Saws are more designed towards green wood pruning than they are meant for dead standing or fallen hardwoods. You didn't say whether or not el-cheapo Screwfix cuts only on the backstroke or both forwards and backwards. I love my ZUBAT, but I am not a great fan of the scabbard and IF I ever get around to making my own review of it, I will explain why. BTW, the reply I got from SILKY European HQ was on the lines of, 'we're good at making saws, but not so good at making sheaths/scabbards'. Make of that what you will. Not much point trying to explain that to an Arborist 10 metres up a tree is there. 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️😉
