    The Sonos Arc is a very high-end soundbar that was released on June 10th, 2020. It is a first of its kind for Sonos because it is Dolby Atmos compatible.
    Dolby Atmos is a 3D object-based audio experience that makes the audio listening experience surreal.
    I forgot to mention that this soundbar does not support DTS audio formats. I don't think this is a big deal, but others believe it is.

    The first RUclipsr I've seen who's been honest enough to say in his video, "if you dislike the video, click downvote, let me know what you think..."
    That in itself is worth an upvote and a sub!

    I added the sub to my Arc, and it transforms the bar, the lows are all off loaded to the sub and then the drivers that power the lows on the bar turn to powering the mids and highs. Effectively the sub doesnt just add better lows, it boosts all the mids and highs too. You really notice it.

      I am using Sonos playbase plus 2 play 5s before. I then added the sub since the low end didn’t sound that clear to me..,

      Isn’t always compressed through arc ? I’ve heard ARC can play Atmos as long as the tv supports it through arc?

    • @JonahMatthes
      @JonahMatthes  4 года назад

      @@TheZumaah I guess technically, 5.1 and up is compressed when using standard ARC. If you are using eARC then it is uncompressed Dolby Atmos. But if you are using standard ARC, then it will be compressed.

    I'm gonna be that guy...
    -HDMI ARC works exactly the same as eARC, eARC just has higher bandwidth. The passthrough on some soundbars (HDMI in) isn't required for ARC to work.
    -Mbps is written as such, not Mbits/second (think mph vs miles/hour, correct but not how it's written as a spec) [that's an engineering nitpick for future reference, not a dig].
    -ARC's bandwidth is still good enough to use Dolby Atmos, it's not an "issue" rather eARC gives breadth to the lossless signals and slight improvements to the lossy signals.
    -no compression leads to lossless signals, compression leads to lossy signals. It's not "what they call it", it's how the signal's information is packaged and what ends up being delivered.
    I wrote this because my Dad asked me questions about it after he watched it and I had to explain to him the minor discrepancies, so this is for anyone else that needed a little clarification. Like "so my ARC soundbar doesn't do Dolby Atmos (anymore)?".

  • @gair1944
    @gair1944 3 года назад +1

    Your review comparing sounders convinced me the Sonos is the system to get. I have had my Sonos ARC system for a month or so. ARC, One SL surrounds AND the Sonos Gen 3 Sub. I am extremely impressed with the system. The Sub surprised me at how deep it goes, yet it is very musical and well integrated. It doesn't just add 'boom'. the center channel for dialogue and detail is exceptionally clear. Even though I have high 12' vaulted ceiling on the wall where the ARC soundbar is mounted, I still get a nice sense of up-firing sounds from the Dolby Atmos speakers. In short, I am blown away at the overall performance of the system. If I had one complaint, it would be the system can be somewhat bright, even when I dial down the Treble EQ range. It is not however a deal breaker. The benefits of this system are massive. I love it. I was thinking of adding a second sub just to see how it performs. I don't feel I need it however. But I am curious. Pricey however, so I'll hang back for a bit.

      @David Mander I've had both and honestly, I like Sonos better. I have a separate HiFi system for 2-channel stereo but for TV and surround sound having a wireless system it's pretty good and with the HDMI Arc you only need one remote, the one for the TV. Sounds is good and usability is awesome.

    • @tjsage4676
      @tjsage4676 4 года назад +1

      @David Mander No it doesn't suck. If you don't have one then how would you know. All separates are great, but to install ALL of them, wire them and power them is not cheap! I have cycled through several systems over my lifetime. Unless the room is designed to be a theater room, it is near impossible to get one properly done to sound as good as a payer system to actually be IN while watching UHDTV,

      @David Mander Don't be an idiot. Just because you cannot afford one doesn't mean it sucks. Yes a component with receiver option could sound better, but not all of us want that in certain rooms in our houses. For a sound bar, this is currently the best option for movies.

    Love it, many many years ago a business I worked for developed new phone sets that went on office workers desks, particularly on people who controlled the stock markets, the technology was amazing, but the phones were incredibly light. Customers who checked the demo models said it felt cheap. The business I worked for added lead fishing weights with a hot glue gun to the demo models to make them heavier, with exactly the same technology the customers said it felt like a quality phone set. It’s strange that weight adds to quality.

    Hi Jonah
    Great allround review (one of the best reviews on the Arc, that I have seen so far). I really like the fact that your aren't affected by any sort of bias.
    I recieved my own Arc 4 days ago, and I simply love it.
    I bought this as a replacement for my old Beam, which was combined with both the Sonos Sub and two Play 1's, that was functioning as rear sourround speakers.
    The Beam is now moved to my bedroom and the Sub and Play 1's, are instead connected to the Arc. This really gives me an audio experience like no other.
    The whole setup is connected to my 2018 LG C8, that "only" have at normal HDMI-ARC connection.
    I did my research before I ordered the soundbar, to make sure that it atleast could output lossy Dolby Atmos, which it could/can. What I didn't realise, was that my tv allso was capable of outputting DA from my UHD blu-rays.
    When the wife and I, watched Infinity war (on UHD blu-ray that is), the Sonos app indeed confirm that the soundbar was playing Dolby Atmos. I thought that blu-ray movies only supported lossless DA.
    Can anyone confirm that DA blu-rays indeed is capable of being outputed as lossy Dolby Digital+?

      My TCL Roku TV is set to convert any audio that isn't DD+ or DTS to DD+ before sending it over ARC; it will also output Atmos over DD+ from Roku apps. I can't confirm if I'm getting Atmos as I'm currently using an older AVR, but I am getting DD+ over ARC even though my AVR is from 2011 (5 years before DD+ was officially supported over ARC). Either your Blu-ray player or your TV apparently converts Atmos over TrueHD to Atmos over DD+, or possibly your TV got a firmware upgrade to eARC.

    GREAT review. I want to upgrade from my existing Samsung sound bar set up. I’m apprehensive about the Arc not having HDMI IN, because everything works so seamlessly at the moment with my Apple TV plugged into the Samsung bar and then the bar plugged into the Samsung TV. I can use the Apple TV remote to turn all of the devices on/off and control the volume on the sound bar. I want to replicate that experience with the Arc and wonder if the lack of eArc on my TV will impact that.

    Hey before you mount your Arc check the spec it says you should mount about 105mm (4") from the bottom of the TV due to the upward firing speaker.
    I've had my arc for a couple days now it sounds incredible!! Playing Atmos tracks from my phone using Tidal is the best sound I've heard in my life.
    However, there are major problems with my new Samsung TV, not sure if same models in the USA but I bought an 85" Q950T (Australia).
    The audio drops in and out every other second it's awful. So I bought a Q70 Samsung bar today just to test, same deal. There's huge issues with Samsung 2020 TVs particularity 950 series and The Frame.
    I'm using HDMI 2.1b 8K cables and/or the one that comes with Arc. Nothing works.
    The only way I can get constant sound without drop outs is to change the setting in the TV to tell it the soundbar is NOT Atmos compatible, even though it's detected as being so (both the Q70 and the Arc).
    It would seem the eARC and Atmos in the Samsung range is in desperate need of firmware updates ASAP.
    Great review.

    Best review I've seen so far! I also never comment on videos. Do you think there is a huge difference in quality with eARC vs regular ARC? Do you know if the regular ARC connection be able to send Dolby atmos info from a bluray player?

    • @InExcelsis9
      @InExcelsis9 4 года назад +1

      First of all it depends on your TV some TV's support compressed Atmos through normal ARC something you need to look up for your specific TV but even if your TV does support Atmos through regular ARC like I said it will be compressed Atmos as opposed to the lossless Atmos sound you would get from eARC which has almost 40 times the bandwidth of regular ARC and to answer your question yes there is a pretty decent difference in sound quality between the two. In all honesty this soundbar is best paired with a 2019 TV or newer that has eARC since the technology is only 2 years old it will still sound fantastic without eARC but you will not get the full experience without it.

    Dolby Atmos is not just speakers overhead. It’s meta data that describes the audio properties of each “object” in the “scene”. It results in a more natural surround sound than traditional channel based. Thinking Atmos is only about sound coming from overhead is a very shallow understanding.

    Even if you were to use this soundbar with a DOLBY ATMOS enabled TV (LG OLED 2017+ other OLED 2018 +) the sound would still only be 'virtual', think about it, how can you possibly get DOLBY ATMOS (object-based audio) when all your speakers are within a few feet of each other!

    2:41 This IS an issue, since Dolby Atmos is one of the biggest perks of the ARC soundbar and also one of the few justifications for the massive price. If you guys have no eARC TV, it makes much more sense to invest in a newer TV first, before going for the new Sonos ARC soundbar.

    I see all these glowing reviews of this bar and I don’t understand it. I get the sound quality may be great, but I don’t think most users are going to be able to take advantage of it. I personally was not looking at any real upgrades. I had the Beam + Sub, and from time to time flirted with the idea of getting Sonos OneS (I think they are called) which go on sale from time to time. Sonos invited me to pre-order the Arc in late April early May I think, and I was very excited at first. I held off after watching what I think was one of @Jonah Matthes vid’s which talked about eARC and what that meant for people looking to upgrade to the Arc. I did a bunch of other research regarding supported sound profiles on Sonos Soundbars in general, and my current TV, and ended up going with the Sony HT5000. Here were some serious problems I had with the Arc. First HDMI, it only had one port which is eARC. Most current TV’s don’t support eARC and for the ones that do, may not support external devices (ea. Apple TV’s, Shield’s) exporting sound formats/profiles like ATMOS into it, and out to a Soundbar meaning your going to be stuck using built in app’s. I found that my TV (a 2018 Samsung QLED) didn’t support it, has no plans for a software upgrade, and doesn’t even allow pass through. 2nd Sound formats, the Arc only supports Dolby formats. Most blu-ray movies have DTS tracks, now if your only watching 4K Blu-rays, and streaming on Netflix or something then yes you may be ok with just Dolby support. I personally don’t like the idea of relying only on steaming services, now that disc are dying. I’m kind of a hold out. I have a Plex server, most of my movies are disc rip’s that I personally ripped myself and encoded into a HQ HEVC/AAC 5.1 files, for my 4K disc, I leave them untouched and just wrap them into a MKV file. I found that Sonos supports AAC, but not multi-Channel, so all my 1080p files are being converted into 2.0, huge deal breaker for me. So... I got the Sony ST5000, which has 3, count them three HDMI ports, supports pretty much all sounds profiles I care about which I can confirm AAC is coming in as LPCM 5.1 which I’m cool with (PCM MAY be a “future” upgrade on the Arc, another deal breaker as its not supported now). The Sony has been on the market for a couple of years now, so you can find open boxes, or slightly used ones for the cost of the Arc or less. I got mine for 500 dollars, so now my Beam + Sub is going up for sale.

    Great review. I like that You explain the nerdy stuff so we understand it. Im a little bit confused about this eark dolby atmos Thing. I see that most tvs only have one eark input and that one is used for the soundbar. Then how Are You going to get the atmos connected to My blueray player or console When there Are No more eark slots, and I cant connect it to the sonos directly because it only has one single hdmi slot? 🤔 Can i just connect the ps4 to a normal slot and then it Will send the dolby atmos signal the the soundbar anyway?

    • @JonahMatthes
      @JonahMatthes  4 года назад

      That’s right! So any device that you connect to your TV by HDMI cable will have its audio sent to the soundbar. The eARC and ARC HDMI ports basically just route any audio signal to the soundbar. Hope that makes sense!

    Hey Jonah! Great video 👍🏻. I thoroughly enjoyed the amount of detail explanation of each feature of this seemingly amazing sound bar. I am very intrigued into getting one for my bedroom setup. But I have one question for you, if you could kindly reply. Because of my current tv setup quite low on the wall facing my bed, I am considering placing the Sono Arc above the TV panel. Do you have any advise for me on this placement ? I reckon it may do great for the Atmos speaking firing upward for added effects. Sadly my current TV doesn’t come with e-arc. Haha. Would appreciate a kind reply. 😃😅

    • @JonahMatthes

      Glad you enjoyed it! The best practice for soundbars is to try and place it at ear level, but it's not absolutely necessary. Even in my living room, the Sonos Arc is well above sitting ear level, but it still performs extremely well! I don't imagine you'll have any issues with this type of setup, just ensure that it is placed on something fairly sturdy so it 1) doesn't fall and 2) doesn't vibrate anything. Hope this helps!

    Fantastic review, Jonah! They say when you are clear in your mind, you explain the concepts simply... And that's what you have done in your video. So Double Thumbs Up! I have a question for you - I have a very open living room with 20 feet ceiling and would Arc be effective in such a room. Right now, I have 2 Play 5s and Sub and I use Connect to play my TV audio to this SONOS setup. What would you say? Thanks

    • @JonahMatthes
      @JonahMatthes  4 года назад

      The Sonos Arc would definitely be effective in a room like this. The only thing that might not work the best is the upward-firing speakers because of the really high ceiling. Trueplay might be able to help with this, but it's hard to tell because I've never tested it in a room like this.

    Hey Jonah, really nice review! You gave an especially good explanation of ARC vs. eARC - I have a 2016 Sony Bravia TV so that was some really useful info. A couple of comments:
    - I've read elsewhere that if your TV supports ARC but not eARC, the bottom line is that (with some caveats) it will pass on a compressed Atmos signal from a media player like an Apple TV or an up-to-date app on a smart TV, but not the uncompressed signal that would come from a blu-ray player. I don't know how many people this issue affects, but you and I both seem to have it so I thought it worth mentioning :-)
    - It would be great if you can do a follow-up at some point with a full Sonos surround system! I appreciate that you're self-funded but it would be great to hear your take on the Arc integrated into a full system. A lot of us have Sonos 5.1 systems we've built up over time by buying additional components when we can afford them, and since the Arc is backwards compatible with every Sub Sonos has made and almost all of their surround speakers, used older hardware works just as well for this purpose.

    • @JonahMatthes
      @JonahMatthes  4 года назад

      Thanks for the kind words, Eric! Signals passed via HDMI ARC is an extremely complicated topic that I don't fully understand yet. My explanation in the video was the simplest that I could explain it that I felt was accurate.
      After having more people comment on it, I should probably do an updated video explaining the audio capabilities of HDMI ARC vs eARC and what audio formats they support and passthrough. It's just going to take a while to do all the research and compile it into an interesting video.
      And I've had enough people ask me about the Sonos Sub that I'll probably pull the trigger and get one soon!
      As for the additional surrounds, I will have to wait a while till I purchase those, but totally agree that it would be great to do a full comprehensive review on a complete setup.

    • @eolsson
      @eolsson 4 года назад

      @@JonahMatthes Any more info on ARC vs eARC would be very much appreciated - right now the only way I'll get a sure answer it to buy an Arc and see if Atmos works with my TV. The Arc is on backorder now anyway so I'll use the time to collect more info. I'm ready to buy it but not ready to buy a new TV if that's what it takes. Once I have an Arc I'll send you a message on your website to let you know if it worked with my TV.
      As I mentioned all versions of the Sub are compatible with the Arc, and I believe they also all have the same drivers - I might be wrong, but my understanding is that the hardware differences between versions are limited to the processor and WiFi. So a used one should work fine. And definitely get the Sub before the surround speakers, but your best bet for inexpensive surrounds are used Play:1s.
      Finally if you're able to do a review of a full 5.1.2 system, see if you can set everything up in a room with a flat ceiling like the rest of us :-)
