My Great-Grandfather, always, claimed to be "full blooded Black Dutçh. I've recently, learned that this is far more extensive in my family than we had previously believed. To such an extent that it's the closest I will come to identifying with any race. And, like my ancestors, I'm VERY proud of my Melungeon heritage.

They arrived from Wales in the 6th century after a comet devestated the UK in 562 AD. They were lead by Prince Madouc, brother of King Arthur II who later arrived with 20,000 people in 700 ships and sailed up the Ohio River. King Arthur II was mortally wounded in battle there in 579 AD, according to Welsh records

None of this is surprising if you know American history. As late as the 1920’s the “white” Americans thought only Northern Europeans and Scandinavians were white. Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish would all be seen as “not white”. The Land of the Free is founded on racism because it became the best way to rationalize genocide of the natives and enslavement of pretty much anyone brownish. They had one-drop laws to make sure mixed people would be held back from any power because those people might identify with the other brown people held in bondage. The need to keep the enslaved Africans and interned Native Americans from holding property and voting and later keep them down with segregation, meant these “not white” people had something in common. So you can imagine 200 Ottoman sailers looking to survive and taking wives from surrounding groups of various Native American tribes- those that survived disease and the trail of tears- plus escaped or freed African Americans. Most Native American nations identified by culture, not skin tone, so there are little surviving groups of mixed people all over those areas. All survivors of our history. They’d need help to learn to survive there, and some genetics and culture would be shared. Think, all the grandparents and in-laws of those first generation families would be Native American and or African American, which might explain how Turkish words got into other languages, rather than a whole group just speaking Turkish. And sadly, as generations went by, it would also make sense for those who looked white enough to leave the area and pretty much say whatever they needed to “French” “Black Dutch” to escape the racist laws holding them down. But what did that do for those who couldn’t? Left behind, disowned by their lighter toned cousins, themselves desperate to provide equal rights to their kids in an unfair society. So goes our hypocritical history. Keep it history. If you are an American, vote against racists, vote for equality. Even innocent sounding things like school vouchers are a form of segregation. Don’t let them scare teachers into not teaching history. Y’all seriously, this history is a lesson.

Y'all seriously, it's so easy to spot the colored thinking of genZ "racist colonists" brand of western civ curriculum. No one born in this century will ever look to see Gen Washington promised freedom to slaves who served a year fighting. That's right. 25% of the Continental Armym 1 in 4 of those soldiers were dark. DAR recognized & salutes this. Too bad our core curriculum does not. Baaa

If you’re referring to the study done by amateur genealogists that National Geographic premiered it turns out that the few people tested may not have been melungeon. There are government tests that show most melungeons are a mix of Native American Mediterranean(frequently mid-eastern Anatolian area) North African and Sub Saharan African and Northern European. There are also other admixtures in some families and in some families there so far has not been some of these. The study is ongoing.

The range of Melungeons was not only light skinned white looking people. There were very dark skinned versions as well as shades in between. And the same racial caste that was prevalent in the mainstream society existed in Appalachia, of course. In fact, there's a video about Jim Crow laws within the Appalachian communities, which would only be logical. I'm mentioning this because the majority of Melungeons who are interviewed or shown in these presentation are white people.

Your comment is not appropriate for the point you are attempting to make! We did not run into any researchers with the darker skin color that you would expect to see!
