This Peel session was only a couple of months before they did the Rock Against Racism gig at Victoria Park, where I saw them live for the first time.
I then saw them again the following month, in May '78, at The Roundhouse.
This evening I just discovered that gig was recorded and is available here on RUclips! So I wrote the following in the comments section to that video...if anyone is interested. I can't believe it's 44 years ago now:
"Wow! Just found this. I was actually this gig! I had just turned 15 years old. The friend I went with was still only 14. Over the next couple of years we went to many Punk gigs together but this was one of the very first.
They were supported by the original incarnation of Adam and the Ants. They had quite a scary following (for a young kid anyway!) - The Ant Army. My friend and I were a long way from our South London homes and were shitting it! LOL.
Then we had to get night buses all the way home - each of us on his own!" 😱

X-Ray Spex at the Roundhouse was my first proper gig, after going to the Victoria Park RAR gig before it, same as you. I was 14 and went on my own and yeah, it was a bit intimidating! I sat up at the back of the stepped seats, well away from the crazy people down the front. It was a seriously exciting experiance and before too long I was one of the people crashing around at the front. I saw X-Ray Spex again at the all seated Hammersmith Odeon later in the year and it wasn't nearly as fun being stuck well back from the stage.

    Great band all around.
Not much for female punk vocals, however, Polly sang and had a killer voice that was perfect for a great band that used brass perfectly (like the Saints, RFTC, Roxy Music...)
Cool version of Identity, little slower...still prefer the guitar sound on the album. Great production...
Thanks for uploading. Peel Sessions never disappoint

Remember the first punk LP with sax was the Stooges' "Fun House" (1970)!
Another good punk band with a sax: METRO YOUTH. Check out "brutalized" (UK 1982)....
