  • Easy DIY Formula for the Best Potting Mix preparation for Home Gardening that helps Plants grow and produce more flowers and also the best seed starter mix. The Video is on the best All-purpose Potting mix for all your plants based on scientific concepts.
    We will also make an Ideal Terrace Gardening light weight potting mixture and the best seed starting mix.
    Let me start with the 3 P’s of Successful Gardening.
    1. Planning your Garden
    2. Potting Mix Preparation and
    3. Planting
    So, Today we will discuss on the second P of gardening, that’s Preparing the best potting Mix for your plants based on some useful scientific concepts. Please watch the video till the end. First we will discuss the Criteria for the best potting soil for your plants and then the formula or the recipe for the best all-purpose universal potting mixture for your gardening.
    Well, You need to Understand this Point: Why cant I just dig up the ground and use this soil for my plants? This is because we have two major limitations of this:
    1. Compaction or hardening of soil - mainly with clayey soil which can suffocate the roots.
    2. Lack of Nutrients in the soil- that’s the Major NPK elements (Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium) and also the minor trace elements.
    Hence, the need to prepare your own potting soil arises.
    Hold on friends, some more important concepts to learn before I disclose my recipe. A few criteria you should be taking care while preparing your potting mix.
    1. DRAINAGE: We all know, too much water can rot your plants. So a well draining soil that quickly drains out water within a particular duration of time is important for all plants. This is the most important criteria for growing succulents and based on this you adjust the proportions of stuff like sand, perlite and other stuff.
    2. WATER RETAINING CAPACITY: This is quite opposite of the first factor. So we have to add materials in such a way that the water should neither drain out too quickly nor it should stagnate in the container.
    3. NUTRIENTS: This is a very important criteria in container gardening. We have to add certain nutrients into the potting mix so that your plant can produce flowering or fruiting at right time and grows in a healthy manner.
    Having said that, Now Lets Start making our Potting Mix with the best and easily available ingredients.
    I am showing you two formulae: Please watch the video for these details.

    Great video. Coco peat alters ph no matter how much you adjust the ph of your water/ feed solution. So some lime would help to keep the medium.close to a neutral ph wich is 7. This will make sure the beneficial bacteria can continue the symbiotic relationship with the roots. Great information as always. Thank you.

    Also for roof top gardening the suggestion is for cocopeat 50%, compost 30%, perlite 20%. I've created my potting mix using cocopeat 30%, vermicompost 30% and perlite 30%. Also I've made nine holes of 6mm diameter. I'm not putting any stones or gravel at the pot's bottom. Still I'm seeing that the potting mix is holding a lot of water. If I squeeze the potting mix with my hand water starts dripping from it even after an hour. I think this is too much of water. Can this result in root rot ? What alterations can I do to make a well draining but water retaining potting mix ?

My roots rot and the soil smells terrible, like rot. I am trying to dig out some of the soil and want to replace with one of your recipes. I see you have a few different ones. My main challenge in growing seedlings is Fungus and small ants. They just kill the plant and its so disappointing. All my efforts go down the drain. So someone told me that my potting mix was not correct. I used red soil 60%, cocopeat 30%, 5% vermi and 5% neem cake powder. No sand. Within a few days ants and fungus would come and if the plant germinated, it would die in a few days. I have tried mixing Turmeric, cinnamon powder but it hasn't helped. Hopefully with good fine sand, I will have less fungus. I don't want to use chemical pesticides yet. It will be the last resort.

    Sir can we use wood/saw dust instead of coco peat?
    And for sand which would be better , white sand (finer granules) or red sand (large granules)?
    Thank you.

    • @GardenTips
      @GardenTips  5 лет назад +2

      No for saw dust because of nitrogen stealing as mentioned in my video here - ruclips.net/video/262FSISLHAE/видео.html
      Sand finer is better for seedlings and other plants but coarser for succulents and cacti.

    Dear Sir, thank you so much for the information about universal potting soil mix ingredients. I live in south kolkata where the soil is glue type, therefore i mix sand for well drainage and have enough room to spread roots. If i mix garden soil 20% along with sand 20%, cocopeat 20% , vermicompost 30%, 1 tsp bonemeal and handful neem cake powder, is it ok? Waiting for your reply. Your blind fan Parichay.

    • @GardenTips
      @GardenTips  3 года назад +2

      Anything is fine. The ideal well draining soil is one which after thorough watering drains after 30 to 60 seconds. Water out of drain holes. You can vary the proportions depending on the plant type - like for succulents increase sand to 50% whereas for trees that need good anchorage make garden soil to 50%.

    • @GardenTips

      Hi. For leafy greens that’s fine but fit growing plants which require anchorage you need atleast 30 to 50% garden soil otherwise the plants won’t stand.

      If you donot have cocopeat, you can mix about 10 percent sand. Do not use fast draining soil for Rose's because they need water.

    Sir why no potash in this mix? Can we add half kg wood ash to this mix?

    • @GardenTips
      @GardenTips  4 года назад

      This depends on plant you are growing. Wood ash increases soil ph and may not be suitable for most flowering plants like rose, hibiscus etc. you should check your soil ph and then decide whether to add or not. ruclips.net/video/y4IZGZU2fOU/видео.html
