Many many years ago my family knew an elderly neighbor woman who would walk to daily Mass every morning. One morning she felt very nervous about walking to Mass. When she opened the door, there was a very large dog waiting for her on her porch. The dog accompanied her to the front door of the church. When Mass was over, the dog was waiting for her and walked her home to her front door. She never saw the dog again, but she did see a holy card showing St. John Bosco with the dog standing next to him.

He was always there as I started my journey home about a block from the school and would stop about a block and a half from my home. You see I went to an all girls school. The neighborhood I had to walk through was on its way downhill. Many years later talking with several priests, they told me I had been followed by St John Bosco’s dog! After leaving the school, my sister had paid for one year only, I went on to public school. I never saw that dog again. Yesterday, January 31st, 2023, was the 59th anniversary of my father’s death. Yes, he died on St John Bosco’s feast day!!
After viewing your presentation, I am reminded of something that happened to me many, many years ago. I live in a mountainous area near a monastery. One sunny day, I hiked up to the monastery. While walking the grounds of the monastery, I saw a wild coyote resting in the sun on a bench. I was surprised at seeing him, so I ever so quietly walked past him, then moved in a brisk manner to get away from him. Within a minute, he started following me. As I moved faster, he moved faster. I started to become fearful as coyotes usually run the other way when they see a human being. In a moment of fear, I cried out the following, “Don Bosco, HELP ME!”. All of a sudden, a mysterious dog started fiercely barking. I looked around and was unable to view any dog. As I heard the dog growling and barking, I looked over my shoulder to see if the coyote was still following me. To my surprise, the coyote turned tail, and was running away from me. I NEVER did see any dog, I just heard his fierce bark. I was very, very relieved and thanked Don Bosco all the way home. To this day, I am still grateful that Don Bosco came to my rescue as I was truly very fearful of that wild coyote. Thank you Don Bosco ,for helping me in a very dangerous and fearful moment in my life.🙏🏻
I honestly feel like when the birds sing and you notice it, it is a call to prayer. It is pulling you out of whatever you were doing and time to remember God at that point. There is lots of pre-Christian and post-Christian symbolism about birds being God's messengers, even angels or the souls of the departed. Whenever you hear their song, know that angels are watching. The way of the Lord is that you are often being watched and prayed for in ways you do not understand. Your strength comes in remembering this, and in being prayerful.
I think that the dog was actually his guardian angel who appeared as a dog. Dogs are truly man’s best friend, and I like to believe there’s an angel in charge of them as they can seem to sense danger before we do.
A few years ago, about 50 miles from my home, two young girls were walking and a couple young men attacked them, when a couple of dogs attacked the men so they ran off. After this attack, no one could find the dogs, and none of the neighbors living near owned large dogs. Yes, I believe that God does use animals to protect us. I could relate a couple other stories, but it would take too much time.
One of my favorite stories of saint John Bosco ❤️ I've learned about him as a young teen girl. My beloved father William Erstate introduced him to us during his beautiful homilies. He gave me a chapter in the 40 dreams for my penance after reconciliation one day and it was the Three deadly nooses! I fell in love with it and read the whole book from start to finish multiple times! It's a definite must read! I felt like I was straying a little bit as a youth from the faith , and St. John Bosco brought me back and set me on fire for God. Thankful for his intercession. Years ago, I had a flat tire in the middle of a park at 2am. There was a single house in the park, caretakers, I guess. I went up to the house and got them to call someone for help, then I went back to my car to wait. It was so dark, and I was nervous. I prayed for God to keep me safe. In a moment, I heard a rustling in the bushes and a huge, beautiful Malamute came walking out of the woods. He walked up to my car and I rolled down my window and petted him and talked to him. He laid down beside my car to wait and I felt so much better!! When my Mother came to pick me up, he calmly got up and walked back into the woods. I'll never forget it and the feeling of peace I had!

I read not too long ago that the devil hates dogs because they are man's best friend and they bring comfort and joy to us. I have an 80-pound mixed breed that looks like a Black Mouth Cur and his name is Simba. I got him in May of 2011 when he was about 3 months old. I am often told that I did a good job training him but I really didn't do anything he was always a good boy. If anything he trained me. He is very sweet gentle and playful and a constant gentleman. I always tell him that he got the raw end of the deal in this relationship and I got the better end of the deal. I think he'll be the first canine Saint. Saint Simba.

Interesting, I read a book before called 'Wolves in Ireland a natural and cultural history', and it had a whole chapter on the saints and wolves. Also in the Old Testament, Balaam's Donkey was able to see the Angle of the Lord and is worth reading about.

I believe this is leftover from medieval days when cats were abused and also cat owners were abused and accused of being witches. We need updated legends where cats and cat owners are not vilified.
