    Honor The C.S. Lewis Legacy-
    / @cs_lewis_legacy
In this excerpt from C.S. Lewis, he discusses the challenging Christian mandate to love one's neighbor as oneself, which explicitly includes one's enemies. Lewis acknowledges the widespread unpopularity of this doctrine, especially when it comes to the difficult task of forgiveness. He reflects on the common human reaction during times of conflict, such as war, where the idea of forgiveness can provoke intense anger and resentment.
Lewis addresses the complexity of this command by arguing that loving one's enemy doesn't necessarily mean finding them likable or denying the wrongness of their actions. Instead, he suggests that Christian love is about wishing for their ultimate good and hoping for their transformation, much like one would hope to overcome one's own faults and failings.
He further explores the notion of loving oneself not because of one's admirable qualities, but simply because one is oneself. This form of self-love doesn't depend on self-approval but is a fundamental acceptance. Similarly, loving others, including enemies, should follow the same principle. It involves a hope for their betterment and a recognition of their humanity, despite their actions.
Lewis also tackles the controversial issue of whether Christians can participate in acts like punishing or even killing in the context of war. He differentiates between necessary acts performed without hatred or personal vengeance, and acts done out of malice or the enjoyment of causing harm. He emphasizes that while certain harsh actions may be necessary, they should never be carried out with hatred or a desire for revenge.

It is easy to ‘love the world’ abstractly (new age); difficult is to love the neighbour (Christianity).

Did you ever read, how Corrie ten Boom has met a SS-man after the war whom she didknow again? Her heart screamed but in obedience she did shake hands with him for Christ!
