"While the romanticism of creating artificial intelligence in man’s image is hardly new science fiction territory, Stuart Langfield’s LOOP is a gripping reimagination that weaponizes love. What can only be described as a Shakespearean AI love story akin to Ex Machina, LOOP is a slick atmospheric and story-driven production that probes the emotional capacity of an AI woman. Beautifully shot with subtle visual effects, Langfield draws from personal experience and the arts to create a film that looks and feels like the masterpiece its character strives for.
Past the impressive production values, admittedly, LOOP is borderline pretentious and a film that you really need to lean into to appreciate. Set in the middle of the 21st century, it centers around a reclusive, retired tech company CEO’s attempts to teach AI how to experience and process human emotions - because who else would invest in such an egotistical money pit of an endeavor? While the dialogue at times gets a bit snobbish and harks on Richard Wagner’s famous opera tragedy Tristan und Isolde, it unapologetically sticks to its guns. In comparing the artistic process to building the human experience, it’s easy to see why Langfield’s screenplay is heavy handed in poetic dialogue. But it’s not cheesy by any means and while it has the potential to be nauseating, the stellar performances and slick execution wonderfully sticks the landing.
While the storyline follows an AI woman, Beca played by Valeriia Polishchuk, who is pushed to her emotional limits in a series of tests, the film is really about coping with loss. LOOP is about letting go and moving on, which is one of the hardest things that real humans must learn in their own lives. And just like a child, it takes time for Beca to work these complex emotions, which is why the film’s inspiration should come as no surprise. Langfield has a young son and so began exploring the film’s concept while observing his own child discover and display new emotions as he began interacting with others. “He was learning to process the feelings of anger, joy, disappointment, sadness, and I found this progression of maturity fascinating and insightful. I started to question whether replicating an emotive incident could result in a similar reaction every time and, if so, could we program a machine to feel?” Langfield tells Short of the Week.
And there’s an incredible attention to detail in this short that provides nuance to an exhausted scifi premise to make it feel more unique. “We really wanted the short to feel like it inhabited a world beyond what you see on screen, so we took an incredibly detail oriented approach with the film. Every decision, from the Wagner references, colour of wardrobe and the hidden messaging within the braille was mapped back to core components and themes of the story. Everything is there for a reason. A lot of that might be obscured to the average viewer, but it gave us a lot of joy to implant all those elements within the short,“ explains Langfield.
LOOP is a rollercoaster of high intensity moments with a sleek imagining of technology through delicate visual effects that scifi fans are going to love. Langfield is currently busy putting together a TV concept based on similar themes from LOOP and he’s just finished writing his next short titled Children of God which he hopes to turn into a feature length film." - S/W Curator Chelsea Lupkin

Wow, this was intense and uncomfortable to watch... someone trapped in a forced cycle of trauma...a pretty good metaphor for PTSD..you keep reliving the same trauma over and over...
I'm sure there are other take-aways from this short, but that is where my mind took it to...you relive the same trauma over and over, trying to process the feelings. Trying to create an AI to do the same would be incredibly cruel (but 100% something that would be attempted)..

Nice! But I found random race interjection a non message in the end, so somewhat distracting.
Therapeutic desensitization is very real, and immersion therapy can be a part of that. It may look "cruel" from the outside, but when conducted by a professional it can be very effective over time.
@@mizscoleman Yeah, I can see that therapy working..same idea as to help over come phobias..through slow but constant exposure in order to become more used to the situation until it is no longer triggering..

I reckon that was excellent, the conductor is attempting to use machine learning to guide Bec (AI) to move through the stages of grieving like a human… Sentient emotional AI would be incomplete without these types of human nuance. Well done!

Forced to re-live trauma over and over...That is no way to live. Human or not. I have so many mixed emotions when it comes to AI. The general population would treat them as artificial, forgetting that they are intelligent as well.

This is *loads* better than what cinema has been releasing as far as sci fi, fantasy, horror, etc. We settle for heaping helpings of recycled lukewarm mediocrity in a lot of cases.
This was similar to Ex Machina.

Great film. But to let go of loss it takes time and she needs to make new memories. Over the time when you make new memories old memories fade away or become less intense. And if he is deleting her memory every time it feels like first time to her, if he is not deleting her memory she knows that it’s a test. Anyway it’s a great attempt to study AI emotions. Great acting and directing.

Yeah, it's called a programming bug, its not that romanced as some want to portray it. This is a form of AGI in development. ASI on the other hand will be ... interesting. Imagine a machine that can program itself to do ANYTHING within the boundaries of the physics it masters at one time, on an infinte loop of improvement. Will it be controllable? We'll see when it reaches a form of self conciousness.
I think you would need to teach the machine like a human child right from wrong Faith in God and Biblical pro ciples with the Spirit of the law as well as the letter of the law with parental care and also an awareness of the machines intelligence to want to learn to want to do to want to grow and have relationships and one's own personality all these things are taught and learned and slowly developed in childhood and young adult life anyways I'm sure that's the way it would have to be done

This is the problem no one wants to talk about. A Machine with only a goal and no emotion.
@@MickeyMishra Emotion would be the problem. Emotion and survival instincts are what make humans and animals kill. That's why humans create moral parameters. But those parameters are only as good as those who choose to follow them. Many choose not to follow those parameters. Giving A.I the choice to not follow parameters is the problem.
Something about the actor playing David reminded me of Dr. Barry Niles from Beyond the Black Rainbow, but older.

I wasn't sure if he was a psychiatrist or psycho decided maybe both . Her attack maybe she'd be thinking the same we have aglesh and blood body yet our emotions are not always a physical feeling . To know he's a psycho and should be stopped can have a variety of emotions and yet not be totally physical just like when you love someone it's so often in the daily routine of what you do that your love is played out and not just in emotional feeling moments

I just want to let you know, Short of the Week, that your short film changed my life... in the worst possible ways.
My wife has died. She watched this film, and fucked herself off a bridge. My kids aren't speaking to me, because of the long-lasting trauma this has caused.

Very intense and concentrated. Using trauma to achieve the human element in AI. You have to consume all aspects of human emotion, in creating a very good replica, but that implicates exception. Ability to make a "random/not random" exception in a given situation, I believe is the biggest difference between human and artificial intelligence. Giving an AI the capability of using exception is dangerous, but it's also clear that a human can't be ever replicated successfully. How can soul be copied into a machine unless we understand and study the soul better. Just having reactions copied and replicated, doesn't make the red to be an apple.
I dont agree that repetitious trauma is the way to developing human emotion seems like a psycho trying to break someone's soul or spirit wanting to see them cry

Short of the Week are such garbage curators. Whatever looks well shot, they'll select it. They have no taste. They get pre-selected festival picks and the rare times they have to actually think for themselves and make a choice, they just ask, "Does it look and feel professional?" No other criteria matters. Definitely not story as they like to claim.
Good acting, frame, scenography but, really sorry to say, it was very slow and boring for me. The whole story makes no sense so at the end it's also disappointing.
