The second Bulgarian empire didn't last for 100 years it lasted for a little over 200 years, from 1185 till 1396. The Tsarevets castle isn't 800 years old, it is much much older than that, Tsarevets and the neighboring twin castle - Trapezitsa, are old Thracian settlements. It doesn't make sense for Asen and Petar to start a rebellion against the Romans, and then built the castle, the castle was already there and as far as the Romans are concerned it was never captured by them, at least it wasn't mentioned in any of their chronicles as being captured during their conquest of Bulgaria unlike Preslav, Pliska, Ohrid and Durostorum, neither it was mentioned that it was captured by Asen and Petar from the Romans unlike Preslav that was in the possession of the Romans and Asen and Petar unsuccessfully tried to reclaim it for the Buglarians at the beginning of the rebellion.
And the correct name is Romans as you pointed out, not byzantine, byzantine is a madenup name by german bias historians. My personal opinion is that Asan's rebellion was a internal affair of the empire rather than a break away. Asan family married in to the imperial family and later emperors descended from Asan.
Veliko is a fantastic city! I've been there 3 times, being not far from Bucharest. I still drink my morning coffee from a gorgeous traditional painted mug bought there. I do recommend it! Love from a romanian neighbour! 🤍
It`s funny for me as a Bulgarian when you say just "Veliko". This is an adjective that means "The Great" in Bulgarian. The Great Tarnovo. It`s similar to say just "Great" instead of the full name-Great Britain.
The Tarnovo fortress was impossible to break because it's up on a hill and the only way to enter it was through a narrow passage. The way the ottomans entered it was bribeing one of the gaurds. At night he oppened the doors and the fortress was captured.
You really missed out, not visiting the church at the top of the Tsaravets. It's the most stunning church I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Could have sat in there all day.
Great video guys! Welcome in to my beautiful country. If you are still in Tarnovo you must go and visit Arbanasi, it's amazing (thanks me latter). Bon voyage and don't forget to explore Plovdiv. 🙂
И хайде стига вече само с тая София, тва Търново, този Пловдив, Несебър и Варна..ю! Обърквате не само чужденците с това повтаряне на 5-6 места, а 1000 по- важни и интересни остават скрити.
Read the other comments, those which don't suggest only Sòfia, Plòvdiv, Vàrna, Burgàs, Nesèbar, Turnovo - the favorite sites of 'sofiyàntzi' :] I'm surprised they've all missed their most favorite Sozòpol 😁 Well, there are also ancient ruins, but they don't go there for them, they go for the beach and the drinking/partying:) Every other place mentioned is more important to the History and more interesting than those above.
You need to go to Plovdiv before you leave my country. This is my city and it's 8000 years old and most beautiful city in the world. You won't be disappointed, believe me. You guys are so cool and thank you for making this for my country. Have a great trip.
Моуст бюутифул..? Айде стига вече... С търновци и варнянци се оливате..! Yes, it IS the most ancient town in Europe at least, but this "most beautiful", repeated by the citizens of some 3-4 big (and therefore ugly!) cities in BG comes too much! Neither Sofia, nor Plòvdiv, nor Vàrna (🤮) are beautiful as a whole.
I saw your first videos two years ago, because I was looking for actual reportings about covid related traveling conditions in Romania or Bulgaria in summer 2021. Thanks to you I traveleld from Germany to Timisoara (my hometown in Germany is a pertner city of Timosoara) made it further to Bucharest and then to Veliko Tarnovo, and finally to Istanbul. All of the cities are amazing. And now it's so great to see you visit an awesome place, that I've been visiting already, partly inspired by your channel.

There is so much more to see in Bulgaria, you should visit Plovdiv any time of the year and the seaside during summer! Also we have amazing resorts in the mountains. You should come back for sure.
My family and I spent a week here about 10 years ago. Its a real fun location. peoiple are amazing and local eateries are fun to get to know. We rented small villa on stilts over looking the art museum / monument. Loved it. Weather in August was absolutely amazing too.
I grew up in that city and I'm still amazed by its views when visiting (don't live in Bulgaria anymore). It is chill, it has a community of foreigners and artists. It is also in the middle of the country and a good place to stop when travelling around Bulgaria. You get easy access to beautiful nearby locations like Etar ethno village, Tryavna, some caves and monasteries. Also, it has a few trekking paths on the hills surrounding it and a few small waterfalls. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Wow, another very informative and amazing video. The footage/drone shots are insane. Velico Tarnovo, Bulgaria is truly beautiful, isn't it? That red blouse looks lovely on you, lvana...a good choice !!!
Present day Romania or part of it has been part of Bulgaria from 681 to 1018 and from 1185 to 1422, so it is natural to find similar or identical customs in both countries nowadays. Even after Bulgaria's fall to the Ottomans in 1422, Bulgarian language has still been the official one in Romania till 1860.
Tell me what you smoke because it seems to work beautifuly. Romania (or the current territories of Romania) were only part of the First and Second Bulgarian Empires (what you claim from 681-1018). But what you said about the 1185 to 1422 is pure bullshit. The principality of Wallachia was NEVER part of Bulgaria, if anything, the principality has been under Hungarian, Turkish and even Polish influence but NEVER under Bulgarian. And Old Church Slavonic (what you call Bulgarian) was replaced as early as the 16th Century as the political language by Romanian, the language spoken by the majority of people there. Stop with your propaganda.
Actually the Second Bulgarian Empire lost Oltenia and Banat to Hungary in 1230. Hungarians establish the "Banate of Severin" in present day Oltenia. In 1241 Muntenia was also lost due to the big Mongol invasion. Later, between 1310 - 1330, Basarab I unites all the teritories between Danube and Carpathian mountains into what will be called Wallachia. The "Old Church Slavonic" language (old Bulgarian) was indeed used in chancelleries and for church services in the same way Latin was used in the West. Other than that, it was not actually spoken by the people. The Romanian language features a number of Slavic words (about 15-20%) but it is a Romance language, not a Slavic one.
Everytbing sa8d is correct..., till the moment we come to the language 😁 Ok, but how can you tell what language common people spoke centuries ago...? You only have 2-3 points to search on. Documents, churches, burial signs and... l THOPONIMY(a) l. Check them, esp. the latter. Vlàsi (vlachs) were roaming bulgarian shepperds, speaking a latin-influenced bg dialect, the same way Karàkatchani are still even today and speak greek-infl. dialect. Nobody had heard about 'romanians' until the reforms of the 18-19th c. Go check your History documents and churches too.
@@KaiHansen-sf1lq this is not the place to have a dispute about this. The oldest document written in Romanian is Neacșu's letter A.D. 1521, and I can tell the language written there is 99,9% similar to the Romanian spoken today. Then, starting with the second half of the XVI-th century, they printed church books in the Romanian language. The Romanian language will eventually replace the Bulgarian in the church services and in the administrative documents. Until 19th century you were calling us Vlachs and you were not even concerned how we were calling ourselves (we called ourselves Romanian from the beginning). And those "Karàkatchani" (i think you are referring to "Sărăcăciani") have a core vocabulary that derives from Aromanian, even their dialect was heavily influenced by Greek.
Hi Guys, I absolutely love you and what you do. I am Bulgarian but unfortunately live abroad and really brings nostalgia watching your tour in my home city Veliko Tarnovo! I hope you guys had an amazing time there but there is so much more to be seen in our lovely country. By the way just to clarify, not all spring water is good for drinking as for an example this one there at 07:41 it says in red writing " the water is not good for drinking", they should have thought about the tourists and write it also in English! Wish you all the best and great time spent together, I will be watching your lovely tours around the world from now on.
I like yours videos because you demonstrate that you are really enjoying the place you are visiting. And Steve, next time in Brazil i am wating for you to we go to a Galo's match. Crazy Rooster!!!!🐔🐔🐔
Amazing place, wow, thanks for showing it and telling some stories. A thousand years old, unbelievable. Those times were tough. Lucky us we are in a modern civilised world.
I did my army time there in 2002 when it was still mandatory. I'm from Sofia, but I often just stayed there when I got a weekend off. Love the place till this day. And belive me it's only gotten better without being overrun by tourists yet.
Super nice video guys! Thank you for showing our beautiful town. However I come to say that this water fountain you found under the house had a written message on the wall saying that the water is not good for drinking. So whenever you see something written on a fountain, please check the meaning. Also is definitely not from the peoples toilet :)))
You NEED to go to Razgrad it's so beautiful it has statues, lake, Абритус (abritus) then we have Момина чешма (momina chesma), good ice cream it's not a very big place but it's still beautiful.
Would've been cool for you to check out the mini-Bulgaria park. It could've provided inspiration for future trips. :) Also, that water was NOT drinkable. Literally a sign that says: not fit for drinking.
The similarity between Bulgarian and Romanian culture is not just due to thracian and dacian times. Romania was part of both the first and the second Bulgarian empire. We have a lot of common history with them. In fact there is a theory that the Asen dynasty(the guys form the monument who rebuild the second Bulgarian empire) were form vallachian origin.
Sehr gute Idee, vor dem Wechsel der Örtlichkeit noch ein paar Souvenirs mitnehmen. Das Schloss ist toll und die Aufnahmen mit der Drohne sehen wirklich gut aus. Weiter so
As a bulgarian MYSELF I can agree that Veliko Tarnovo is a good city. The statue of the three brothers is more of an obilisk, but its still pretty Cool. As for Tsarevets, it is a VERY beautiful and big fortress. The path goes up and up, there are loads of interesting stuff
A Neolithic settlement was discovered in Slatina, which is 6-7 thousand years old. Bulgaria, the oldest country in Europe that has never changed its name. The Varna civilization, with the world's oldest processed gold, is 8,000 years old. The tomb of the first pharaoh of Egypt and also the goddess Bastet is also in Bulgaria in Strandzha mountain. Bulgaria is an extraordinary land, with deep history, energy and ancient people. Welcome to the cradle of European and world civilization. After the great flood, which turned the Black Sea into a sea, because before that it was a fresh water lake, these people migrated and spread the knowledge they possessed around the world, going east.
Росене, все повече забелязвам как слайтли ги интересва тва нещо с ейншънт древността, както са повечето минаващи :) Ама ще видим. Само че най-виновни са нашите глашатаи, които не спират да повтарят едни 5-6 места
Lovely video! Next time come to Plovdiv where there are little mountains in the city so you can see monuments and have high ground view of the city, lovely center and a lot of infrastructure.
5:31- Right next to the monument with the 360º view, at night, and if you are lucky you might see fireflies. We were there in 2019 and stumbled upon tens of them. Arbanasi is only 3km away from VT and is also definitely worth the visit especially if you are a history fan. Just a free open-air musuem but the must is Etara open-air ethnographic complex which is some 50km away from VT. A very beautiful place. VT area is also home for a small Brit community that managed to buy cheap houses at the time when Bulgaria together with Romania entered EU in 2007.
Then they should go to Bozhèntzi village too. Funny, I saw a firefly in front of my garage (in the city) a few days ago. They were away for from decades ago. ... Nature is taking back hold... 😄
The white cheese is called 'sìrene' (not 'sirène' or else, as it is not from some (wood/forest) sirens (''sirèni', samodìvi', 'rusàlki'...'), though it would be nice if such cheese existed 😁)...
Veliko Tarnovo is one of the most beautiful towns in Bulgaria! Next you come around these parts check out a few towns and villages in the Rhodope mountains like Shiroka laka. Towns there are old and hauntingly beautiful, and the nature in some parts is almost alien, because of how fertile the soil is and how accommodating the climate is.
The tower you looked at was obviously a defense tower. A high value prisoner would be held in a tower in the central keep. This one was in the outer wall and had windows specifically designed for shooting arrows toward outside intruders.
Fun fact: The cool building next to the Asenevtsi monument (the gallery) was once the prison of the city even though it doesn't look like it. Still it's the best destination for photos in Veliko Tarnovo
Hello! I have been in this hostel! Nice memories .... The sandwich with choped meat is called Printzessa - very typical! Aren't the brothers 4? End these shirts are not super super bulgarian style.
Welcome to my hometown and thanks for the good words and the good video. Our town is so beautiful but for some reason inhabitants don't see it like that because it has a lot of problems too but you realize how good this town is when you have left it. I love my Veliko Tarnovo. It is truly pearl in Europe. I enjoyed the moment where on the spring was written the water isn't good for drinking but in Bulgarian and he said I think it is drinkable and my reaction was Ohhh no.
It’s unfortunate that the Bulgarians tend to focus on the negative and fail to see the positive. Life could be hard and all that but if you’re always negative you’ll be unhappy even in the prettiest place. Things won’t change if we don’t change our attitude first, no one is going to fix the problems for us.
If you go to Plovidv, make sure to travel a bit more south to Asenov grad, you'll find the Asen's Fortress there. It's great to see our country form the eyes of visitors. We Bulgarians usually take for granted what we have in our country. P.S. - that wather wasn't good for drinking. The red sign above says it.
We Romanians and Bulgarians have a shared common History of almost 1k Years with the Bulgarians thats why i love them as my people.

The Tarnovo fortress was impossible to break because it's up on a hill and the only way to enter it was through a narrow passage. The way the ottomans entered it was bribeing one of the gaurds. At night he oppened the doors and the fortress was captured.
A local jew. Sorry, historycal facts.
@@KaiHansen-sf1lq well there's another theory it was a gypsy. But it was a non-christian for sure. Turnovo of the time was very diverse
You really missed out, not visiting the church at the top of the Tsaravets. It's the most stunning church I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Could have sat in there all day.
go to Plovdiv its my fav Bulgarian city and its oldest in Europe
Yes I read that somewhere. Do you know when it was founded?
So excited for my trip to Bulgaria this fall! Thanks for the great video content.
This is probably the most amazing video about Veliko Turnovo I've seen in my lifetime! Bravo x 100!
Can you suggest some please?
Read the other comments, those which don't suggest only Sòfia, Plòvdiv, Vàrna, Burgàs, Nesèbar, Turnovo - the favorite sites of 'sofiyàntzi' :] I'm surprised they've all missed their most favorite Sozòpol 😁 Well, there are also ancient ruins, but they don't go there for them, they go for the beach and the drinking/partying:)
Every other place mentioned is more important to the History and more interesting than those above.
Beautiful city! Love the drone shots, food and of course the history! 10 stars!! Keep safe, healthy and happy.
I am born and living in Veliko Tarnovo and I think that Plovdiv is much better than my city ;)
@@KaiHansen-sf1lqBut Devin Townsend played in Plovdiv! 😅
Guys i just watched ur previous videos, u're nice. Bulgaria is great !
Wow, thank you for sharing this with us. We are happy to hear you had a great time on your travels.
@@JetLagWarriors Thank you, you have a great channel, I always feel, you are really genuine, you have a great mix of being positive and passionate but you also tell there are hardships to the lifestyle and you can see it or read it between the lines. And you give justice and the respect to all the places and people you visit. It's great!
I live in Bulgaria but I've never been in Veliko Tarnovo. Thanks for sharing the experience. I'm adding this city to my "to visit" list.
If you go to VT take time to go to Nikopolis ad Istrum. You will not be disappointed
There is so much more to see in Bulgaria, you should visit Plovdiv any time of the year and the seaside during summer! Also we have amazing resorts in the mountains. You should come back for sure.
Please, stay in Bulgaria forever. We love you and you love us!
Splendido video ,ottima regia e ottimo racconto per la antica capitale di Bulgaria-Velico Tarnovo.😇🫶
My family and I spent a week here about 10 years ago. Its a real fun location. peoiple are amazing and local eateries are fun to get to know. We rented small villa on stilts over looking the art museum / monument. Loved it. Weather in August was absolutely amazing too.
Thanks to you I revisited Veliko Turnovo again, and as an adult now I see the true beauty of this city.
What beautiful landscape. Great drone shots and a history lesson too. Enjoying this through your eyes!😊
that place is indeed, gorgeous. I would love to visit it one day -it tickles my nerd senses in all the right ways
Beautiful place ❤
Guys u must try that slice of bread first spread some butter on , put some LUTENICA and then on top rinse that white cheese which you can see it everywhere in the shops. Thats how we growed up
7:27 it says the water is not for drinking, but you can find tons of places in Bulgaria where you can drink from.
I'm traveling the world and was researching Veliko when I found your video. I am curious about the Palmeiras shirt (I'm Brazilian).
BEST PLACE IS “PLOVDIV” A SECOND LARGEST CITY IN BULGARIA and the Coast as Well Rodopi Mountain and Everything in Bulgaria
Absolutely GORGEOUS ,Amazing,Brilliant,BEAUTIFUL
“GOD SAVE BULGARIA “
Wow, another very informative and amazing video. The footage/drone shots are insane. Velico Tarnovo, Bulgaria is truly beautiful, isn't it? That red blouse looks lovely on you, lvana...a good choice !!!
...And Ivana bares a bulgarian name, very interesting :)
Just fyi 7:40 it says: "Водата е негодна за пиене!" which means "The water is not drinkable!" :D
Bulgaria has been my favorite place since 1983.
Thank you for a great report. We are British, but live in Bulgaria very close to Veliko Tărnovo and love the city😊
Magic Bulgaria❤
Hey mate nice video, thanks for visiting!
How come you haven't been to "Mehana"restaurant with live music"& also try "Mixed grill"☺️🤙
What kind of nonsense are you talking about, man? ...read more because obviously, you're brainwashed .
The world is really small ! I saw you on the street while you were in Iasi and again yesterday while you were in Veliko :)))
Wow! Are you from Romania or Bulgaria, or elsewhere?
Cool! Яко! :)
This is my hometown, beautiful it is ❤
Love watching you guys in Bulgaria and all the food
thank you! Glad you enjoy the videos
It's older than 1k years. It was a settlement even during 1st bulgarian empire. Plovdiv dates millenia. Oldest settlenent in Europe
Благодаря ти, брат!
Mein Wunderschönes Land🇧🇬 ❤
Danke schon Sonya!😂❤
You NEED to go to Razgrad it's so beautiful it has statues, lake, Абритус (abritus) then we have Момина чешма (momina chesma), good ice cream it's not a very big place but it's still beautiful.
Thanks for loving my hometown. And btw, 7:38 there was a sign that says "the water is unsuited for drinking".
Would've been cool for you to check out the mini-Bulgaria park. It could've provided inspiration for future trips. :)
Also, that water was NOT drinkable.
Big shoutout to you guys and to Nikolay.
I hope u had a great time in our city! Come back if u want! ;)
My town so proud whit him!!
Another beautiful vlogg of the city, your explorations and info. Thank you Jetlagg Warriors👌👍
Very nice ,very nice my friends!! Thank you very much for moments you share with as! 😘😘😘🙏🙏🙏
Bulgar comes from Asia
Lovely video! Next time come to Plovdiv where there are little mountains in the city so you can see monuments and have high ground view of the city, lovely center and a lot of infrastructure.
...И една грозна... равнина навсякъде... 😝
Thanks for the video guys! Being Romanian love this city❤!!! Image reservation but to bad the vacation to Greece was by plane finnaly😢
love the tune and the dance at the and of this video, lovely
I guess pesticides have not fully eliminated fireflies. They are pretty much extinct in the us
Sveta Gora the hill from the Asen Brothers monument and up is always full of fireflies in the summer.
Super e mnogo krasivo .
super!
At 5:50 the monument looks like the place of a Dark Souls boss battle.
"I think this is drinkable water" - and the sign on the wall says - "non-drinking water"😅😅😅😅
For us, buying cheese (kavsar) in Bulgaria is a must..🙂 Best in the World.
Yes! :] Only the real/good one. There are many fake cheeses, yogurts and yellow cheeses ('kashkavàl') unfortunately.

The Balkans are like the underrated hidden gem
The tower you looked at was obviously a defense tower. A high value prisoner would be held in a tower in the central keep. This one was in the outer wall and had windows specifically designed for shooting arrows toward outside intruders.
Fun fact: The cool building next to the Asenevtsi monument (the gallery) was once the prison of the city even though it doesn't look like it. Still it's the best destination for photos in Veliko Tarnovo
Veliko Tarnovo,Bulgaria!
Hello! I have been in this hostel! Nice memories .... The sandwich with choped meat is called Printzessa - very typical! Aren't the brothers 4? End these shirts are not super super bulgarian style.
Love the Rooster Hostel! I always stay there when I'm visiting Veliko Tarnovo!
Yo! We met like 5 cool people there. In 2 or 3 days. Great place
I'll check that if I visit Turnovo... :)
I've always stopped there using the bus to Sofia or by work, never went there as a tourist.
Things won’t change if we don’t change our attitude first, no one is going to fix the problems for us.
...И вие сте прави... ;)
Congrats for the 250k subscribes
thank you
Great video!
În curând ma voi afla în aceasta frumoasa locatie
If you go to Plovidv, make sure to travel a bit more south to Asenov grad, you'll find the Asen's Fortress there. It's great to see our country form the eyes of visitors. We Bulgarians usually take for granted what we have in our country. P.S. - that wather wasn't good for drinking. The red sign above says it.
Thanks for the tips!
Exactly, AS(S)ÈN, not some (H)asan as the romanians obviously call him.
Just GO TO the most beautiful city in Bulgaria- PLOVDIV ❤
Аман бре..! 😁
Regarding the water. There is a sentence on the wall that this water is not good for drinking
The red letters on the watter spring meand "Not for drinking"....
