    Amos said he couldn't judge whether it would be a good idea to kill Holden or not...unless Naomi told him. Notice that Amos always looks toward Naomi in questionable moments...he held a gun to Holden's head, but looked for guidance from Naomi. When Alex was hypoxic, he was muttering an argument with someone about leaving home on space missions...and notice he keeps a photo of a woman and child. These are the kinds of subtle hints fans talk about that are sprinkled through the series.

    No spoilers in regards to the series; series doesn't explain this. Just the origin of the Belter language and some physics.
    Belter language is a compound language formed by the original asteroid workers coming from many different nations, so it has words from many languages.
    Water flows weird when you're in a centrifugal acceleration situation. They built bases inside the asteroids with the floor towards the surface and then spun them up so that they have outwards pull higher than the low gravity an asteroid would otherwise have. (How the asteroid doesn't spin apart? That isn't explained.) The way water flows when poured under such conditions is actually correctly illustrated.

    In this episodes they first poured water in the place of "cactus guy" and it went normally to a glass, but later on another scene water made weird curve when it was poured into a glass. This is example of Coriolis force in physics. There is more comprehensive take on Wikipedia, but shortly put in the context of The Expanse it means that in Ceres station's gravity is not the same everywhere but differs depending which part of the station you are. I think it has something to do with spin gravity, as the station is carved inside of asteroid of the same name. Anyways, the gravity is "normal" in the first pouring scene because it happens in better parts of the station where wealthier people live. The weird one happens where lower classes live.
    It is no coincidence that gravity is sometimes referred as one of the character in the series. It plays important role in so many scenes and the creators of the show spend lots of time to demonstrate different aspects of it in various scenarios. Attention to detail on this level is very rare in sci-fi, but The Expanse is one of the best examples of such "hard sci-fi" genre that takes science quite seriously.

    • @MattNolanCustom
      @MattNolanCustom 4 дня назад +1

      They're making "gravity" on the inhabited asteroids with centrifugal force. They spun them up some time agoi. So "up" is towards the centre and "down" is outwards. You get more sideways deflection from Coriolis the closer to the centre of rotation you are. Besides the docks, the fancier places are towards the outside and the lower class places are towards the middle.

    • @PsychoMuffinSDM
      @PsychoMuffinSDM 4 дня назад +1

      I just don't like how twisty they made the pour. It wouldn't work like that. I'll just chock it up to artistic license to present the concept you described. Ironically, the "lower" class are actually 'above' the wealthier people. The parts with stronger gravity and less change in gravity over an equal distance are closer to the surface. You have to climb upwards to get closer to the center. I love how this navigation is consistent all over the place throughout the show.

    • @jasondolph2785
      @jasondolph2785 3 дня назад

      The really strong Coriolis effect was a deliberate exaggeration so it would be obvious to the audience. That said the first few episodes have most of the technical mistakes in the series, like the wrench scene, which is the most absolutely egregious in the series IMO.

      Yeah, I think many people misunderstand that the word Creole means a partial hybridization of two or more languages and not strictly French Creole from Louisiana. Belter Creole is English enough that most native speakers can understand a lot through context, but many words are unfamiliar. The Expanse has realistic literal vs. Functional translation issues as well, such as Welwalla meaning someone who loves gravity wells in the literal, but the expression functionally meaning a traitor or collaborator when used from one belter to another.

      A “creole” is an informal language made up of other languages.
      I mean, modern English is basically a creole of French, German, Latin, and Greek with loan words from even more languages.
      Lang Belta is also notable in that it’s partially a sign language, which is explained early in the show and ends up being a plot point later.
      I mean “ends up being a plot point later” is basically 90% of the show. The amount of setup and payoff is ludicrous.

While martians are high-tech science driven people, because that would be the types of personalities that would have been sent to colonize a new planet from earth. While earth is all politics and power struggles. It's something you see in Firefly too, where English and Chinese ended up mixing because they were the two main languages of earth.

    The wrench should not have flown away that way.
    They're in a vacuum, in microgravity, and not accelerating, so it should've just hung there the way bricks don't.
    Little things you notice on multiple re-watches. 😀
    There is nothing biological in space that humans didn't take with them, in this setting.
    Why would people take mushrooms that *weren't* edible, and *couldn't *grow just about anywhere -- including on the damp walls of an access tunnel for water pipes?
    In the books, genetically-engineered mushrooms form one of the most important staples of the Belter diet.
    In American English slang, "planting" someone in the ground, or "in the deck," means to hammer them down so fast and so hard they get buried like a seed. 😁
    A "click" or (more accurately) a "klick" is shorthand for a "kilometer."
    So, the "Donnager" was 80,000 kilometers away when it responded to the distress call from the "Knight" shuttle.
    The water bent when it was poured into the glass to indicate it was inside a spinning station.
    This show doesn't miss much when it comes to getting the science *mostly* right. 🙂

With that many humans, haphazardly going into space, there will be all sorts of fungus and bacteria that you didn't intend to bring. There were rats on the Canterbury! I think it is more likely that a Belter who works the tunnels would know what was good fungus and what wasn't, just like an experienced woodland forager would here on Earth. Especially given that supplies are evidently short in The Belt.

Maybe a villain, maybe a hero, maybe someone you grew to love or hate like Addy or the crew of the Cantebury. Sometimes its an accident.
